Overclocking an i7 920 D0 - 4.7GHz

Im glad that I have a chip that can overclock so very well.

I tried what you said about increasing the BCLK to 190, and when I saved that on an unused profile space and then exited, I then rebooted and the speed was 3.99! :D

I have not tested it in Prime, but will do that soon enough, but im now very happy to have the chip at that speed, I didnt realise that it was that simple :D

I could push it further im sure, but rich said that anything like 4.2 and I would have to push my case fans onto high to cope with the extra heat, and if I did that it would generate too much noise going past the medium fan settings im currently on.

As rich is much more of an expert than I could ever wish to be, I will take his advice and not move past the 4.0 I am currently achieving

I have an old CO 920 chip. Can get to 3.6Ghzeasy but after that its not to good. Need to put a good few volts into the chip. Might try and move it on sometime and get a newer DO chip. Would like to get 4Ghz with maybe lower volts.

I have a DO chip, and can easily manage 4.0, but wont be going any higher due to being on air cooling and wouldnt get away with more speed without increasing the fan speed, and that would be no good for me tbh

Wonder what kinds of speeds I could reach if I ever decided to go for water cooling

Most d0 chips will do 4ghz at around 1.3vcore
So if you did want to push for more i would suggest upping the vcore by two notches for every 5 bclk you add after 4ghz

Im sure that 4.2 is a very doable clock on air cooling, but the idea I didnt like the thought of was having to push my case fans from medium to high, and having them on high all the time would just annoy me

im sure you wouldnt have to have them on high, all, the time. just when youre putting it under load

even with that clock the temp isnt going to blow the cpu up on medium fan speeds

well inside my case if all fans are on full you hardly notice it because the noise is so minimal.

and when playing a game or something i can't hear then anyway as i have the sound on or headphones plugged in so doesnt bother me

I would notice it because my case is the Antec 1200, with 7 fans in total when I counted them all, I suppose I will whack them onto full and then see what the noise difference is, but I can imagine it would be quite loud with everything going at full speed

I have an ASUS Rampage Extreme II, and currently have a nice 4.0 with my Antec 1200 case fans on medium settings. The only thing keeping me from going beyond this OC is having to ramp up the case fans to high, and the noise/performance ratio isnt really worth it that much TBH
