Hey, I have i5 ivy bridge and xfire 6950's

I have a Asrock extream4 board and used the extream tuning unitily and changed the multiplier on the CPU and got the CPU to 4.2 easily without issues. but as this is my first time OC a CPU just wanted to know if just changing the Multipler is ok when overclocking.

Also with the GPU everytime I'm on Catalyst Control Centre and go onto the overdrive part and click accept it disapears and I cant find it untill I restart CCC and then it asks me to accept again. I know MSI afterburner is what I should be using for OCing GPU but it has more sliders than CCC and I kinda like things to be silmpler when it comes to OC'ing =D

By yeah, help here would be great. Thanks

Changing the Multiplier whilst OC'ing IB chips is exactly what you're meant to do. If you want to go further than 4.2/4.3 you'll probably have to put the voltage up a bit (I wouldn't suggest using software that auto sets everything for you they usually go pretty vcore heavy and it's just not necessary) It's quite easy to learn to use the bios to OC now adays as well I'd suggest taking a look at a guide or two :)

yeah I've looked at a few guides but got alittle confused. But finding a good guide for Ivy Bridge was proving to be difficuilt

The only reason I haven't done it in the Bios is because my keyboard doesn't work in it :S I have to plug in a different one.

Ah that will be why I got the BSOD at 4.5 =D

though the extream tuning unility changed my Bios settings so it wasn't like CCC where it only oc's when app is running. But I'll try doing it in the Bios later.

Strange. Did you check the for the USB legacy setting? My BWUS works fine in my Asrock BIOS.

I have the corsair K90. also not sure what the USB legacy is. =D

Also do you know what settings in the Bios is for the multiplier. I cant see anywhere in there 'Multiplier' =D

thanks

ok I changed the ratio to 43 so it reaches 4200.46mhz. should I change the Voltages or Bus speed? Bus Speed is at 100Mhz and volts 1.088 (Is the highest i've seen it go) =D

Base clock. It use to play a really big part in overclocking but now it's not really used. By default the BIOS should have it set to 100 but since your multi is 43 and your clock speed is 4.2Ghz instead of 4.3Ghz I took a guess that your BCLK is too low. That or you typo'ed :P

Oh yeah that was a typo. I meant to put 42 :D

the voltage keeps changing. shall I just knock 0.05 off a few times?

Or go into the bios and make it 1.2?

Edit. It only reaches 1.92 anyway. Shall I just leave it?

ok, I'll go into bios and do that. BF3 a good enough stress test?? LOL

I tried finding the intel burn test but never managed to find it online anyway. brb :D

when i went to change it i got the option of either offset or fixed. which one? also i was able to either add or minus voltage so i need to find out what its currently set at :)

Try 1.15V if it doesn't work then go to 1.2V and take off 0.05V until you no longer BSOD.

I am at 1.15 atm

Edit. OK I up'd it to 1.20 going to test that. Make sure that's all good.

though a question. Why don't people just leave it on auto. Rather than going through the hassle of testing every one?

and do you think it's worth pushing the chip further than 4.2?

ok, I'm stable at 1.20v and 4.2ghz :D

during test it only reached 69c on Intel Burn Test

Thanks for your help :D

Though I haven't really noticed a fps increase on anything LOL
