Overnight Oatmeal

That will be the Raspberries then :) no matter which brand i have tried they are always sharp, I just do more blueberries.

Since my post in 2015 we've changed our approach to overnight oats.

We now use a Breville Blend Active blender with the following each:
  • 30g of oats
  • 50g of frozen berries (blueberries for me, mix berries for the wife)
  • 300ml of water
  • 200ml of milk (just me)
  • 1 banana
Whiz it all up and stick the bottles in the fridge overnight, then drink in the morning.

My wife found that she didn't have time to eat the oats when she got to work, but by having it in a drinkable format she was able to drink it in the car on the way in.

Still tastes good but I guess it's not your traditional 'overnight oats' anymore.

Yep, easier to get and little cheaper, however most of the pots in supermarkets are low fat, all that fat has been replaced by even more sugar. If you want proper yogurt without all the sugar its a smaller pot and more expensive.

It just tastes better :)

Whacked some of my brothers Protein heavy peanut butter in mine for this morning. Not a fan at all. Far too stodgy and gloopy even after adding additional milk.

I've stopped my veg and fruit smoothies in the morning for now as I was beginning to consistently get an upset tummy afterwards. So, over the last couple of days, I've started having porridge again...with berries/almonds (or hazelnuts) and maybe a level teaspoon of xylitol or sultanas. I kind of wasn't intending to start bumping up the carbs but then again, I've never been a lover of heavily restricting any food group over the long term.

Have never bought into the Nutri* trend for bltitzing carrots/spinach/? definitely not for breakfast, it's breaking all the cell walls too, so not slow release.

Seems blueberries can be in the 7-15g sucrose per 100g, so quite a range, (maple syrup ~60)
now inspecting the supermarket varieties to look for keecrisp variety, since have found some supermarkets bitter
We found that during the 1st harvest, Keecrisp was sweeter by 4° Brix than either Arcadia or Kestrel and was the cultivar most preferred by both children and adults. For the 2nd harvest, mothers liked each of the cultivars equally, but children preferred Arcadia, which was 2° Brix sweeter than the other 2 cultivars.

Had to cut back on the Chia seeds. Partly because my body doesn't seem to process them but also because it makes the stuff taste glue. Was thinking about subbing the honey for a little vanilla essence instead...

Yeah we don't put chia seeds in anymore because of the weird texture. I don't actually mind it, but instead I sprinkle them on top in the morning.

Anyone who likes Carrot cake:

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup carrot, finely grated
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 3 tablespoons raisins
Wet

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 and 1/4 cup almond milk, unsweetened
Above is my all time fave so far.

need a picture,
although I can see recipe is online, uncooked spices are often gritty/harsh,
probably have to buy good quality carrots too, most of the standard supermarket ones raw are not so palletable/not sweet/fiberous, I find.

Im not too much of a foodie to complain. I find the recipe indulgent enough for my pallet. and I think soaking the spices in the almond milk (my preference) overnight has never left with me anything too harsh or gritty.

Like anything "food" though - its personal preference.

Yes Maccy - Cups! a vague measurement at best I know. But this works with the premise of overnight oats for me.

I personally don't have much interest in precisely measuring each thing, which I know leads to slightly varying results, but I'm OK with that.
