Overwatch

The main meta this season seems to be run rein zarya hanzo. Nearly every match I play now has zarya rein hanzo.

The rein just fights front line with zarya bubble on him constantly doing big damage and building up charge for the zarya.

Then zarya hanzo ult combo to take point win fight.

The best healers this season seem to be brig and mercy.

Did my comp placements for the 1st time in about 5 seasons today, on my alt account though. Got placed 2800 which is ok I guess since the highest I've been on this account is very low 3000s.

I still have the controversial opinion that maining dps and purely out aiming your enemies is the way to go to climb in Overwatch. I know the game tries its absolute hardest to stop solo carrying but 2-3 picks with Widow is going to win you the fight 9 times out of 10.

Yeah if you have a widow on your team hitting headshots it's normally an easy win.

If you are a really good widow it's probably best to find a mercy main that's good and team up with them, then you going into match with healing and kills sorted.

...snip...

I think I know a lot of what you've posted, it's just remembering it in the heat of battle or even fighting the instinct to do otherwise. Yesterday as Mercy, Rein charged in, kinda silly, but I flew after him trying to heal and we both died instantly. Immediately I thought 'what am I doing?!' but it's too late. The save your ult for a winning position, I've got better at, but still sometimes pop it, then realise most of my team died already as I get focused down in seconds.

Not even slightly controversial - it's a fact that this works...

Had a game yesterday where one guy on the enemy team claimed to be a 4k SR player smurfing at mid plat and he was playing Widow and just team killing our whole team in almost every team fight... Looking on the guys he was grouped up with was pathetic as well - they were all either silver or bronze every season since the first and then all of a sudden this season they're all mid plat...

I just don't get the mentality... I'd rather be in bronze than get to plat/diamond purely by having a high-ranked friend carry me there

Yeah I had to stop playing rein because with him I just can't seem to keep calm I always end up doing stupid random charges and random solo ults.

I'm good with him but for some reason my decision making when I play him is terrible.

What's more painful is the toxic chat you get if you hang on to an ult because well, is there really any point in solo ulting a single dps or tank that's in my view when half my team is already dead behind me?! And it's like rein why don't you ult.... -_- Some people don't have game sense. I love using earth shatter and then seeing weakass DPS on my team not follow it up and the 5 players I hit all get up every time.

Good discussion, and some good advice. I would say that I know all that stuff, but, as said, it's about remembering in the heat of the battle. I think the biggest issue is getting a whole team that understands these principles, and you just don't get that in Gold.

I must admit that I've learnt a lot from watching the pro's in OWL, and the tips from imginy match what I've seen; especially grouping up, knowing when a fight is lost, combining ults, and not to use an ult on a lost fight (unless the clock is close to zero). In Gold, it is frustrating knowing this stuff and your teammates doing their own thing. Like grouping up before going into a fight and not trickling in, combining ults or even following up on an ult as a team. I've started playing Rein lately, and the amount of times you start with a healer and teammates behind you, you lead the attack, drop the hammer, and then realise that you are alone on the point... you kill one or two of them, and then quickly die to the other three. I have also learnt with Rein to use his charge sparingly to avoid overextending as a result.

I get frustrated about teammates not grouping before going into a fight, but especially when playing Brig. You watch OWL, the team groups up before engaging, Brig uses ult and armors everyone, then you engage. At my level, no matter how much you communicate to group up, and you have ult and want to boost everyone, it feels like you're on your own. I'm still working on the charge/melee/whip combo, but I'm only getting it half the time... I don't know if it is my ping (40ms), my decreasing reflexes with old age, or I'm just crap! I have a dream that things will improve a little when I get GSync monitor (hopefully next few months), but I know I'm kidding myself! :p

I'm sure that you're right, and this is how it should be IMHO. If your accuracy and elims are higher than everyone else in your match, then you should be climbing SR. Of course, each person has their limit when it comes to aiming, so telling someone to just out aim everyone if you want to climb is the same as saying "git gud". Unless I invest a lot more time in the game (unlikely), I think my accuracy has plateaued, so my gains are currently from improving positioning and decision-making.

A good Widow is priceless on your own team and so frustrating when on the other team. I've had a couple of evenings grouped with a Widow main who appears to average 55% scoped accuracy...nearly every fight is at least 6v5 :D

Well the most typical think I see is the grouping up issue... how often have you had this exact situation...

You're doing okay on attack, but your momentum gets stopped by a good enemy ult combo or whatever... suddenly your team are struggling and trickling. An angry teammate starts berating everyone for not grouping up on chat and/or starts spamming "group up with me" in-game... but then rather than pulling back to a safe location near spawn that same player is peeking through the choke or doorway taking potshots, and then just as the rest of the team are grouped and approaching they get picked... it's proper infuriating

Got myself a second account in the anniversary just passed so I can play all the off meta characters and its really brought a fair bit of fun back for me. Ana/mei/bast main on that account but I've already climbed it to mid diamond where seemingly lots of try hards are giving me grief for being off meta :/ If I had a 1p for every zarya/rein request.. Freezing these new rein mains really triggers them mind you xD

Ana is really underestimated, I have had gold healing with a mercy on the team a few times recently which would have been impossible before.

Why the need to have a second account just for playing off meta characters? It sounds like you are doing a good job if you have got to diamond.

I think Ana is a strong hero, but you need to be a better player to be as effective with her, which I think deters lower level players. Especially in the current meta, the value of her anti-heal grenade in the middle of a brawl can really turn the tide.

Personally I bought a second account because my friend that I play games with hovers at 2500-2900 elo, where as I hover around 3500-3600 when I play seriously so we can never play together. I don't care for "stomping noobs" as I hear a lot of people do with their second accounts, I literally just want to play with my friend and that's it.

Couple of brig tips for ya.

For the charge/melee/whip combo you are probably not getting your melee out fast enough, You shouldn't try and time when you press the melee button just simply keep it held down then as soon as shield bash hits your melee will come out instantly then you cancel straight into whip.

One thing to remember about brig on overwatch league is they are using the old patch where brigs ult gave everyone 150 armour. Now with the new patch where it maxs out at 100 it seems much better to use during a fight or right before the fight starts rather than stocking up at spawn.

After the shield bash, do you actually use melee or primary attack (LMB)? Visually they appear the same, so I have been using primary attack... Maybe this is my mistake.

I'd be happy to just enter a fight with a full team... armouring up more than 2 others is a bonus!

I think they are same thing, I use the primary attack button.

I never let go of the primary attack though I hold it down for the shield bash then keep it held down.

You can practice it against a wall in spawn room before match starts.

I have found time to upload couple of brig video's so you can see how I play her. I don't have record button set so I didn't have many highlights to choose from. I will map a highlight button and get some better clips.

First time uploading video hope I done it right.

A little 1v1 vs hog

a potg using rally

me picking on zarya

As you can see I mainly use the combo for everything, sometimes I will just hold the shield up and take damage until another shield bash is ready.

Edit: 2.30 this morning finally Hit master :) I'm very happy with this I been grinding it out for past couple of weeks trying to get it.

Not the best clip in the world but this highlight is taken in the game I won my masters so it means a lot to me.

Well done getting to masters! Also, thanks for the clips... I'll get practising! I also need to remember not to go chasing people solo when using Brig... you can feel invulnerable with her sometimes, but you can be quickly overpowered if you get isolated (much like Rein).

Back after 3 week off it......same crap, different day.

So sad now - down into Silver (1950) after peaking 2 seasons ago at 3300.

5 games today. Won 1 - did 24.7k healing as Mercy to help the team.

Lost 4
  • Two stack left game after about 3 mins so ended up 4 v 6.
  • next game 4 dps players who refused to switch (widow, hanzo, tracer, sombra)
  • following loss - solo healer (me again) - with a two stack playing as torb and sym on Nepal.
Can't wait for the hopefully useful "social" features to eliminate the 4dps etc.
