Overwatch

nice, now you get to enjoy the 10 hour slog to level 25 :D

Speaking of slog so many smurfs are appearing recently.

Damn, it's rather addictive.

There seems to be a lot of jargon to learn. I am lost when trying to follow you guys or read the subreddit about it.
I like the chick that flies around with the rocket launcher.

The longer you spend getting proficient with a number of heroes and understanding the game before venturing into comp, the higher your starting rank is likely to be and the most enjoyable your experience will be in the long run.
So bear that in mind before doing placements the second you hit 25.

I meant to ask - what is this about level 25? What are placements? I just click 'quick play'. Is there a whole lot more that I don't know about?

Does anyone else find in competitive teams are afraid to counter Pharah?

I'm usually playing Mercy as main (around 2000 - 2200 SR) and more often than not, a Pharah will just focus on me 24/7. Most of the time players wont pick a counter even when asked, allowing the pharah to go on a rampage doing the majority of the damage for the enemy team and generally being a massive PITA.

Once you hit level 25, ranked or 'competitive' mode unlocks. Your first 10 games each season in that mode calibrates your skill rating from which wins and loses will raise or lower you.

If you play these as soon as you can, perhaps before fully understanding the game, you could end up in a much lower level than you perhaps belong once you learn a lot more about effective strategy, team composition and counter picking. Especially if you have a lot of FPS experience from other games.

With the game being a team reliant as it is, it can be frustrating losing games when team mates play like complete idiots, which can be more and more frequent in the lower ranks. Skipping these ranks by placing well is a big plus.

Also, this season your starting Ranking was based heavily off your final rating from last season. So, by rushing your placements too soon and placing low, you might not only be putting yourself in a bad spot for this season, but also for future seasons.

I think the issue is, a lot of the people that lock in DPS in lower ratings do so because they don't necessarily understand how to play tanks or supports properly and maybe don't want the responsibility of the team dying directly because they messed up. With DPS it's more indirectly I guess.

The people picking DPS might not actually be the greatest shots but it's easier to look like you know what you're doing when you're cleaning up easy kills from behind your tanks rather than being responsible for creating the space your team is using, or blocking major threats or keeping team mates alive.
They might not have the ability to hit the shots in succession to kill a Pharah before she gets healed up, especially if she has a pocket Mercy.
If that Pharah is causing havoc for your team and everyone is giving you **** for not killing her it's probably pretty rough to be that guy, so it's easier to play hanzo or genji and say we need someone to go hitscan!

I do get that but even just having something that can damage her (if if she isnt killed) is enough to stop her going on a killing spree.

I find phara easy to lock down but for some reason she is often ignored, but then I seem to be stuck with total idiots more often than not.

A decent ana can keep a pharah out of the game easily...

Done it many times myself.

Yeah I mostly play Ana and deal with Pharah pretty easily. It just sucks when the tanks don't give you and the rest of the team a few seconds of protection so you can skip the healing to deal with her.

This. I still find myself as Ana on a team with Lucio, 3 tanks and 1 dps. The DPS is invariably one of the ones who ignores chat, doesn't join voice chat etc. and usually picks Junkrat. Asking for a hitscan DPS tends to be ignored by the tanks (they are tanks, after all).

Pharah is a nightmare to deal with unless I just decide "sod the team" and take her out myself. If the enemy team are pushing together, that means I have to let someone die :(

I main Pharah, but it is very rare that a team wont counter pick me. Not to mention how many counters there is to Pharah... Soldier at the moment is in such a ridiculous state.

I got the bad end of the stick running quick play, then straight into competitive in a span of around a week (of purchase) playing hours on end day in day out without giving the game much thought.

After placing 1600SR in Season 2 and dropping to ELO hell (~500SR) then moving slighlty up and doing 4W/4L/2D in Season 3 and placing around ~650SR, I've learnt my fair share along the way and will try to help anyone I can with a few tips. I'm breaking my Seasons high daily now so I think I have learnt a few things :p

Playing lower/higher SR is sometimes totally random, and has to do with how your team interprets the other team composition and maps (aswell as skill level of your team mates, ofcourse).

Don't worry much about what the SR ratings are when playing against other teams, be it higher or lower than your rank. I've had multiple instances were I creamed higher SR players (with crazy K/D ratios) over and over again when they make the most noobiest errors or not picking the right counter character to yours.

General Tips
1. Always stick with your teammates, it's easier to melt heavy HP characters like Roadhog and Rein and gives you a chance and time to go back and heal yourself if you can't self heal. Pull back and wait for your team if your stuck alone and there's multiple enemies in the area.

2. Don't run around in open areas, try to position yourself so you have a cover advantage (next to walls, behind obstacles etc).

3. If there are Torb Turrets / Symmetra Turrets / Bastions try to take them out first.

4. Always go for the weaker players (Mercy, D.Va out of the Mech, Torb) Mercy gives immense strength to the other team for healing during battles aswell as giving Pharah and Dva steroids in damage.

5. Jump around when one on one, and move left and right when shooting. This puts the enemy off and easier to pick on their weaknesses. Running in circles (around the opponent) when in a 1-2m radius and spam shooting them (chest or higher) gets the kill pretty easily.

6. If using Dva or Rein shields, if the opponent has a character that needs to reload , attack on the reloads.

7. Depending on the map, use cliffs to your advantage with Lucio (right mouse click), Pharah (right click) or position yourself so when their Rein tries to pin you you jump and he falls down.

8. Master DPS or an offense character that does a lot of damage in lower tiers as most of the time the loses are due to teammates being worthless at getting Elims.

9. Try each hero atleast for one full game of Attack/Defense for each map. I made the noob mistake of thinking if I got killed very fast that the character was worthless, or not trying new heroes because I felt I was better at others.

Note: Some heroes are better/worse against other team compositions, you get a feel after a while of how much damage you do vs each enemy hero and how effective you are.

Very helpful, thanks!

Best tip I can think of: lower your sensitivity so you're aiming mostly with your arm (pivoting from your elbow or at least 20cm for a 360 turn) and focus 100% of your attention on hitting shots with a hitscan character for a while.

Most highly ranked players are highly ranked because they have great general fps aim
