P & O Ferries

Are you even allowed to do that to employees without notice? Especially as they are unionised too.

Basically you get put on gardening leave

Probably more accurate in this instance to say that the ex-employees are receiving Payments in Lieu of Notice (PILONs).

Gardening leave the employee remains an employee and can still be asked to work.

Isn’t it illegal to make someone redundant and then replace them with someone else doing the same job?

Outsourcing a role is a valid reason for redundancy AFAIK.

Separately to above, I'm not sure how much leverage the Union is going to have... If the parent company pulls financial support then P&O could go bust and its members would probably receive even less money.

All the rich and wealthy people are going to live on them in the middle of the ocean whilst the rest of the world burns in a nuclear holocaust.
No we have submarines.

I mean they, sorry they. I’ll be at home not in my top secret tunnel to the sea port under Devon that we must not discuss.

So P&O are done then. I find it hard to believe most members of the public will support this behaviour
I think we need to wait and see. Right now we have a union creating fud. If they sack staff and replace them all with foreign nationals I suspect it will hit them a bit for sure.

I think its illegal to do in the UK but id suspect P&O are probably owned & operated by someone outside the UK.
i could be wrong ive not read into who owns it,But REALLY scummy move by P&O i hope people bycot using them.

Is this where you get rid if all your decently paid skilled staff and bring in a load of min wage agency staff to run the ship?

Iirc PO cruises are owned by Carnival group and are totally separate from P&O ferries.

Ahh phew, I can still go with a clear conscience

Didn't want all these lefties with their cancel culture ganging up on me!

What could possibly go wrong!

Cant believe they even had the cheek to bus loads of foreign workers in to the docks to take over straight away.

Shocking behaviour.

It's not illegal if they are paid whatever redundancy package they are entitled to plus payment in lieu of notice. Who the owner is is irrelevant, they still have to comply with UK law if they have a UK company or UK staff.

As a Brit working at sea myself, I fear there will come the day when we’ll be simply priced out of the market. Whole sectors of the industry have basically forced Brits out by paying wages that would be effectively untenable with the cost of living in the UK, but attractive to people from developing countries, like India, The Phillipines, Burma, Indonesia etc.
