P & O Ferries

I can't remember any time a company has basically sacked all it's staff without any consultation in order to replace them with cheaper agency staff, I was under the impression the employment laws were meant to offer some protection to the staff unless the company was actually bankrupt/insolvent.

Same, I was under the impression to make more than a few people redundant you had to run a consultation.

I have been through redundancy many times and normally there is a 90 day consultation where other options can be brought forward to avoid the job losses (Not that anyone listens). I am not sure if that is law or not but that is what I have experienced over the times it has happened.

I would hazard a guess that any contractual notice time will be paid as gardening leave. For example in my case it is 3 months plus your redundancy package on top if I were told not to work my notice.

I would hope there are some key elements missed here in the reporting as it does sound rather dodgy. I would expect the staff are to be paid in full whilst the 90 day consultation happens.

A little digging and it really does stink. 800 people on an average salary of 32k is 26 million for the year. They paid out 270 million to shareholders last year..............

Also the way it's been done seems to me to be on quite dodgy ground.

From the news I read at lunchtime P&O were offering an "enhanced" payment to compensate for lack of process/notice. In which case on what basis would employees take P&O to a Tribunal? To get what they're already getting? Reality would be they'd be arguing over quantum of the compensation in all likelihood.

It's ruthless but it's one way to get things done quicker.

What happens if this becomes a new way for businesses here on out... Usually when one sees they can do it and get away with it, others follow.

The zoom call...

Was just reading the comments...

The company has had to consider a range of different options to drastically reduce costs.” ~ Willing to bet this guy won’t be taking any pay cuts to ‘drastically reduce costs.

Absolutely disgusting behaviour by P&O, I hope the employees take them to the cleaners and the customers stay away.

Precisely this. People say it every year with Ryanair. Yet money talks.

Nope I flatly refuse to give that moron o Leary any of my money and will not fly Ryanair at all and I travel by the tunnel when I drive in mainland Europe.

I don't think I'd be wanting to go on a ferry when it's manned by a team who have had 2 days work experience.

Also, if I was a P&O shareholder I'd be getting rid of my shares sharpish because that company is in for some stormy seas ahead.

I wonder how much they're losing in terms of training and experience. Training 800 new staff members will be very expensive.

Regardless, this is an absolutely shameless act and I hope the staff / RMT go for the jugular, they deserve it. I'll certainly not be using their services again.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a rebranding in the coming weeks / months.

Hard to believe they signed off doing things in this way. Just seems crazy. Even if they do get operations running again today/tomorrow, who is going to book with them now?

Why is there so much coverage and outcry of this particular case though?

It's a great opportunity for right-wing commenters to distract people from the reality of conservative free market idealogy treating people like trash, by desperately trying to pin the blame on unions (what?) and dem foreigners coming over here nicking err jerbs.....
