p5k-e Q6600 OC Help please

What is the best BIOS for the P5K-E/Wifi??? I'm still on 503 that came with the mobo...

Found a bit of time (read as wife not ready yet!) So I'm running through the suggestions in this thread one at a time, first up Pneumonic's..

(Speedstep or whatever its called is disabled for the moment, CPU fan under bios control)

Ambient Temp - 23C

Idle core temp - 47-47-44-46.
Idle vcore - 1.480

Load under Prime after 15 mins - 71-71-69-69
Load vcore - 1.456

So that looks OK but I will need to dtop the vcore and tighten the ram timmings then do a full prime test.

After applying the bios settings I got the now comon BSOD stop code 0x00000005, a full power off at the psu seems to sort this but it is getting annoying, doesnt seem to happen when I boot to vista though

Next up Big.Wayne... x9 multi

Loaded up my 3.4Ghz OC profile and made the following changes -

9 x 378 - 3.4Ghz
All other settings on auto
Ram - 5-5-5-15 @ 2v
Vcore - 1.375

Booted up fine with a 9x multi at 3.4Ghz so it must have been me being a dougnut :D

Temps after 15 mins of prime -

Idle core temp - 40-42-37-40
Idle vcore - 1.352

Load under Prime after 15 mins - 61-61-59-59
Load vcore - 1.336

9x390 - 3.51Ghz
Vcore - 1.4125

Idle core temp - 43-44-40-43
Idle vcore - 1.392

Load under Prime after 15 mins - 67-67-65-65
Load vcore - 1.376

Thats about all I've got time to do now. I'll push further tomorrow and find the max FSB as well, got to go out again now though so will leave the PC priming at 3.5Ghz :D

Cheers fellas!

edit for HEX - I'm also on 0503, not bothered to update it yet as I couldn't get an answer on what the best bios to update to was.

edit 2 - no BSOD's using a 9 x multi with a lower FSB, might be on to something here??

Im not sure you would be reaching the boards limit as many people have had these well past 500fsb. Mine is sitting at 445x8 atm and will run 455 1:1 with a 7 multi. It is strange it doesnt like a different multi though.

I run the 0703 beta Bios atm, might upgrade as the board has some issues at high FSB 495mhz+ and a nice large FSB hole between 448mhz and 461mhz

I think it may be my memory rather than the board, or rather the combination of settings I'm running.

update: Prime has now run for 5 hours without error sitting at 66-66-65-65, I'll leave it going until the morning then up the fsb further.

I've got it now at 3.51Ghz prime stable for 13 hours :D Pushing a little further to 3.55Ghz (9x 395) after running prime for about 5 mins the PC just blackscreened and shutdown, temps at the time were 68C. Going to change a few settings and try again.

Well no matter what I vcore I select I'm getting a BSOD at anything above 9 x 395, so maybe 3.5Ghz will be my limit, still I'm very happy with that :D

Will find the max FSB later today...

x9 multi is fine up to 3.51Ghz m8, still not had a chance to work out the max fsb, sorry will do it just not had the time to put aside to get it done yet :(

Well been following this with interest, and trying out on my own new rig.... sadly can't get with in a mile of you guys....:(
Also running a 6600, was optimistic when I read above comments about VID, as mine is 1.2250v.
I using the cheaper P5k SE, should this be a problem. Same Geil 2Gb 6400 RAM.
So far 3.0Gig (333*9) is far as I get stable, but hot. I can get to 3.2 and 3.4, into windows, but prime drops cores with errors, after a minute or two
So far had V core up to 1.4 in Bios, which reads out as 1.32v in CPU-Z idle, and 1.224 under load. But temps cleared 70, so I stopped.

I don't see these voltage stabilising option you guys speak of. There's is Voltage reference value, (Auto, 0.63x,0.61x,0.59x,0.57x) Clock over-charging Mode, (Auto 700mv,800mv, 900mv, 1000mv) I left them all at auto.

My suspicions is not over the CPU, but Mother board or PSU..(Antec 500 Earth Watts...in a Sonata3 case)......Then I'm never with O/Clocking ! :(

board may not have the voltage dampening settings, also the P5K-E + motherboards are designed with extra features to stabalise high clock speeds... that said sounds like you could do with some more cooling on that CPU, 1.4v isnt to much as long as your temps are ok

VID, as mine is 1.2250v
Very Nice, was that purchased from overclockers? Retail or OEM?

3GHz is a nice start, considering that you are new and all

I don't think its on the P5K SE, in fact I'm not sure its on any of the boards that don't feature an 8-Phase power design and thats mostly the boards around £100, not 100% about that but maybe someone else can chime in?

I think it may well be your mobo, it is the value version in the P5K family and I'm not sure how well its suited to a large amount of overclocking? still I would expect it to get your chip to at least 3.4GHz stable?

Hang in there and just be patient, keep reading and keep making methodical changes to your settings and you should make a bit more progress! :)

I'm using a Nija B, arctic silver 2, have lightly lapped the cooler. All fans are minimum, but case open and fans on high will keep me in the high 60's I think.
Would a Noctua be better...... But it all must be very quiet...... Oh well perhaps I bought the wrong board !!
Bought on required features, and cost, for silent HTPC and PC duties.

Re 8 phase power regs ....ahhhhh.. As the values posted, they seem to drop a lot to me !

It's an OEM CPU, from OcUK, delivered on Christmas eve !!!

Running XP Pro, btw.

people, look out for the Q6600 L745A stepping cpus, Week45, these are overclocking monsters and ocuk has a large batch of these in OEM, not seen one over 1.25VID and most arround 1.200 dead, i tested about 20 so far and ALL good.

Check your chips FPO you may have one of these monster chips Tizor refers to;)
