Paddlesports (Kayaking, Canoe, Stand-Up Paddle boards)

Refunded :(

Whilst not surprising, it is a little disappointing to have not even got a message to state it was a pricing error or anything. Just an email showing the refund.

Bummer, would have been a nice gesture to offer a discount on one or something. You could ask

Thanks, my main paddle is a 2 piece and too big to go in a sup bag. That's a great deal though. I'm going to bide my time on that I think

Had a really nice 10k paddle yesterday. Watched this series of paddling tutorials and really trying to breakdown my stroke and look at each phase. There are 7 in all. Pretty helpful

Will check them out later. I’m very erratic when paddling. Sometimes I’ll paddle for ages on one side and go nice and straight without thinking and then others I’ll concentrate and turn in circles!

Back on paddles, I saw a few people on Facebook recommending the Decathlon carbon paddle.

Right, think i've settled on a board. After spending days looking at everything and getting carried away looking at Starboard Airline and Fanatic Falcon boards at £1300.

I'm gonna go with the original idea of the Gladiator Elite. At £699 it's a bargain and speaking to Gary at Sup Inflatables, he'll send me the 27" board and if i find it too narrow for me, he's happy to accept it back and swap it for the 30" version. The pump and paddle are both good as well rather than the usual crap, not that i particularly need either.

If i'm honest with myself i don't think i'll use it regularly enough or am skilled enough to really benefit from something costing a good chunk more. Plus if i go for the 27", it leaves some cash to potentially get a 11'3 x 32 board for times when it's rougher and i want something a little more stable.

Never seen one in the flesh but certainly looks good. Decent of him re exchange. You'll be fine on the 27 but it may take a few wobbles getting there so give it a bit of time.

Yeah, he seems good, even had my mobile number stored from a previous call so answered with "Hi Martyn" which was a nice touch. He imports the boards for Gladiator so obviously has an interest, but i spoke to another retailer who was also very complimentary on them. SupBoarderMag also did a review of them all and seemed impressed.

I think i'll be fine 90% of the time, especially on canals. The concern will come from heading to the Lake District once the wind picks up. My balance and core strength is shocking. Although it's something i'm working on.

I actually feel I’ve made decent progress on that thing. I’m probably spending more time balanced in general as opposed to “push up, hit floor, push up, hit floor, push up, I’m doing it....hit floor”

Still not great but holding it for around 10seconds or so. Just need to be careful as feel like I’m straining my lower back a little.

And board ordered. Seems to suggest i'll get it tomorrow. The good part about it only being a part birthday present is that i don't have to wait till my actual birthday :D

BBC seems to suggest some sunny times both tomorrow and Saturday so lets see how things go!

Turned up around 12ish, finished what i was working on, unpacked it and was on the water by 12:45 :D

It's crazy how much longer it is compared to my 10'8.

The quality of it seems pretty good. There's a few blemishes but the deckpad feels really nice. A little less grippy than the Bluefin so hopefully should aid moving around a bit.

The pump is excellent. It's the Bravo SUPer pump that tested even better than the Red Titan, despite being single chamber. I got the board up to 20PSI in a shade under 7 minutes which is much faster than i expected.

The paddle is also decent and all carbon, which you certainly don't expect on a £700 board! Not done a side by side test with my Enduro, but it certainly feels light. The blade shape feels a little more touring'y aswell. A bit longer and less rounded.

I also can't get over how light it is, it's noticeably lighter than my Bluefin board which makes carrying it around a breeze.

Got on the water, i get in from the canal bank, so have to step down ~2 feet from the edge onto the board. Was a bit nervous but needn't have been. It feels stable and i'm happy i went with the 27", had a few small wobbles when i had a fairly strong headwind but nothing major.

It's also crazy how straight a 14' board with a touring fin goes. At times, i found myself heading towards a band on a 60degree bend at pace and turning was a real effort!

Only managed circa 30 minutes as i needed to get back to work, but pace was ~16 minutes/mile compared to ~20/mile previously. That was also with a strong headwind for the first mile. So happy with that and i'm sure i'll only get faster as confidence improves.

Only negative i found and it's not the board, is that i developed a strain in my left shoulder/tricep. It's not something i've felt before. I presume there's a shift in technique with the narrower board that i'll need to work on, especially as i want to paddle longer and don't need to feel discomfort at 20 minutes in!

Excellent, sounds like a succesful purchase. Good man. You wait until you start step backs on it. 7 feet back feels a really long way :)

Haha yeah i can imagine!, The kick pad bit should come in handy for that.

I'll be waiting till i'm in cleaner water though before trying anything like that. Had an email from British Canoeing suggesting there might be some slight lifting of restrictions in the next few weeks and hopefully then i can get up to the Lake District.

@Skidder I watched those technique videos on Friday. I've watched a few videos on technique but this was the first one which suggested imagining putting the paddle in mud and then using the core to pull yourself forward rather than using your arms to pull the paddle back to you.

Saturday i got out and did around 4 miles, my core has been killing over the weekend from it! I definitely tired in the last mile and my technique suffered. Not helped my a fairly heavy headwind. At one point an old man on the side was stopped to chat to me and i was being blown backwards and had to paddle just to stay level with him. That really tested my balance as it's much harder on this board to balance without having that forward momentum.

Shows i have a long way to go before i can think about 4-5hr paddles!
