I think only the most extreme of Nintendo fanboys are hoping for a Nintendo win.
TBF, Craftopia (their previous game) was released in 2020 and had the same catch a mob mechanic as Palworld looking at the video on the steam store page.Saw an article earlier regarding a GTA mod which pre-dates the patents and may serve as a precident (although I think this seems pretty dumb, as the mod is so obviously infringing on Nitendo/Pokemon IP!).
Palworld Dev May End Up Getting Help From an Unlikely Source in Its Nintendo Patent Lawsuit: An 8-Year-Old GTA 5 Pokémon Mod - IGN
As Palworld developer Pocketpair’s patent battle with Nintendo and The Pokémon company rumbles on, one patent expert has suggested the key to the cause may be found in an old GTA 5 mod.www.ign.com
It wasn't until reading this earlier that I realised that the patents in question were filed in '22, I'd previously assumed they related to earlier/the original Pokemon games.
As others have pointed out, the broad strokes intepretation of the claims (particularly around mounts) would seem to include many hundreds of other games - I had worried as my main game is Ark, which relies on riding captured creatures, as well as a 'pokeball' type mechanic (cryopods), and with Ark already being on somewhat shaky ground due to their publisher's (Snail games) bad investments I was really hoping it wouldn't be dragged in to this ruling.
Regarding the ~$30k settlements, my understanding is that it would not just be a monetary penalty, but would also prevent full launch of the game (i.e. pulled from sale and never leave early access).
if the mechanic was in before the patent it would help them for sure. but depends when it was introducedTBF, Craftopia (their previous game) was released in 2020 and had the same catch a mob mechanic as Palworld looking at the video on the steam store page.
Nah, I hope Nintendo win. Blatant IP theft.I think only the most extreme of Nintendo fanboys are hoping for a Nintendo win.
