Palworld: Pokémon with guns

depends on the wording of the patent.

if its genric it would effect a lot more than WOW. think any game that a player might mount a horse for land travel
i expect the patents have been writen spesifcally against Palworld and very tightly focused to avoid legal actions from other larger business entities

I guess. Like I said, I did skim read the patent.

How many of the people who FOMO'd in to this are still playing? Never seen such a quick dropoff.
Well actually maybe that Diablo clone.

So that mounting for specific zones (air water ground), would that mean Blizzard will have to stop with the mounts players get in World of Warcraft?. As you get air, ground and water mounts. A quick look over that patent tells me its the same mechanics.

Pretty sure in WoW you also have items used in many quests that are thrown to capture npcs and also throw npcs during a fight
Also, from my understanding after watching a few videos is the capture one is about capturing something in a 3D space, which craftopia (their previous game) did before Pokémon Arceus (whatever it was called) did it.

It was also pointed out, Nintendo are looking for about $60k dollars and an injunction against Palworld. It seems like they're angling for a settlement to set a precedent.

I really don't care about Pokémon or Palworld, but I'm not at all happy with the idea of Nintendo winning this one.

We said the same, really hoping Nintendo are boycotted over this, disgusting behaviour

Yeah right lol. We all know how well video game boycotts go in general and it sure as **** ain't happening with Nintendo.

Given it's a clear rip and released with their other rip (of BOTW) still in EA. I'm positive this company is just trying to make a quick buck and for that reason, I hope Nintendo win.

I am not so sure actually on this one though I am sceptical often. I believe they sold an absolute shed load of them on release and they have continued to support it with quite big updates to the best of my knowledge. If they had just abandoned it early on then yeah.

dont forget the company has some backing
Pocketpair, the Japanese developer behind Palworld, and Sony have inked a deal to form a new company called Palworld Entertainment.

Which game is that? Craftopia? (I know nothing of BoTW as I've not played it).

Loads of games take inspiration from others and plenty of them end up looking identical. Just look at Minecraft.

Craftopia looks like a mash up of tons of different games with an art style and definitely plenty of inspiration from BOTW.

Neither are my kind of game, but craftopia looks wild and the gameplay doesn't really look anything much like BOTW to me. I can absolutely see why someone would play it over Nintendo's offering.
It offers something different. Something that Nintendo doesn't. Same with Palworld.

I'd hate for Nintendo to win and set a precedent that allows them to effectively prevent innovation in the industry.

I don't want to play Pokémon, but maybe one day I'd like to play a game like Pokémon if it offers something different that catches me. If Nintendo win then maybe if that hypothetical game comes out they will kill that too. How is that good for me or anyone that isn't Nintendo?

Saw an article earlier regarding a GTA mod which pre-dates the patents and may serve as a precident (although I think this seems pretty dumb, as the mod is so obviously infringing on Nitendo/Pokemon IP!).

It wasn't until reading this earlier that I realised that the patents in question were filed in '22, I'd previously assumed they related to earlier/the original Pokemon games.

As others have pointed out, the broad strokes intepretation of the claims (particularly around mounts) would seem to include many hundreds of other games - I had worried as my main game is Ark, which relies on riding captured creatures, as well as a 'pokeball' type mechanic (cryopods), and with Ark already being on somewhat shaky ground due to their publisher's (Snail games) bad investments I was really hoping it wouldn't be dragged in to this ruling.

Regarding the ~$30k settlements, my understanding is that it would not just be a monetary penalty, but would also prevent full launch of the game (i.e. pulled from sale and never leave early access).
