i think the devs have too. the game is really looking dated now and it's still so far off.
Yeah. I'll probably read up on it over the week, but I'm not sure I'd even be able to play it if it did come out, as I've switched over to Apple stuff in the meantime.i think the devs have too. the game is really looking dated now and it's still so far off.
It reached pre-alpha 2022, kinda.Blimey. I completely forgot about this thread. I haven't been following Pantheon much over the last three years.
Still in Pre Alpha, looks like it will still be in PreAlpha for all of this year at least. Graphics engine and animations have been updated and its no longer you running around in a greybox world but progress is definitely going pretty slowly. At least we get to play a pre-Alpha session every month now which is a big increase on the amount of time we get to play ingame. Realistically though, the earliest I could see this coming out is 2025. Which may or may not be a case of too late.
I think the original EQ graphics stood the test of time much better than the Luclin versions. Firstly, the Luclin models looked totally out of place in the old zones. So then they revamped all the zones, and frankly the zone revamps were a total mess, every ... single.. time.It actually started being developed in 2014 the modfied unity engine has had 2 majour rewrites since; but even so is starting to look dated in particular the graphics.
Dated graphics is not always a bad thing they can be remoddled in later passes but for a MMO remoddling all the assets is a mamoth task and VR don't have the resource to pull that out of the bag at current.
At the pace it's going not a chance by 2025, I think we would be lucky to see this hit alpha in 2025.
Quite sad really because I enjoyed the Everquest games in the late 90's and the concept of an old school MMO with modern day graphics and engine really did appeal to me.
The graphics I can live with but remove the old school mechanics and I'm out. Though it might be moot anyway now that EQ3 is on its wayThis has felt like a slow death which is sad to see. The new graphics look horrible, I instantly thought generic mobile game mmo. The original graphics at least felt mature and nostalgic. The current trajectory reminds me of the anticipated Crowfall, and we know how that went.
personally i like it, it has a zelda feel to it, which may also have been their inspiration, seeing the success of that game and the simple graphics.urgh that looks like wow graphics from 2004, i hope thats not the direction theyre headed in, so many games tried to copy wow & died a death.
Wow, and people complain about Starfield not looking up to par and this is the updated look?!? I'd forgotten just how strong the Kickstarter craze was back in 2014 but I had thought most of the games barring a certain Space Opera had seen the light of day or been canned.Well, the graphics that so many people felt were too dated , have now been revamped with an artistic style designed to better last the test of time.
I hope that the reasoning that they "want to appeal to a wider audience" doesnt also mean that they are going to remove the old school mechanics like xp loss on death and corpse runs and slow xp etc, in order to also "appeal to a wider audience"
Having said that, EQ3 is coming (aiming for 2028) , so I wonder if an official Everquest 3 now due to arrive means a deathknell for Pantheon anyway.
Yuck. Yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck.Well, the graphics that so many people felt were too dated , have now been revamped with an artistic style designed to better last the test of time.

Thats the bit that worries me, that actually worries me more than the graphics. If they have switched their aims from making a faithful old school MMO to reaching a bigger audience then I could foresee them dropping the staples of old school MMOs, like XP loss on death, corpse runs to get your gear back, mobs which do not give up chasing you leading to trains, slow xp gain focused toward realistically needing to be in a group, slow HP and mana gain requiring you to camp spawn sites and more, all these things that made old school MMOs what they were, all things which the modern MMOer probably wont tolerate. And all they kept saying was "Bigger audience, bigger audience, more players, this will reach the biggest audience possible."
And you know something else that's entirely predictable...Thats the bit that worries me, that actually worries me more than the graphics. Thats the bit that worries me. I feel now like they are soon going to announce changes to the game mechanics in order to widen the appeal of the game. Something which is entirely contrary to Brad Mcquaids original vision for the game. Cant help but feel that they've lost their way (in terms of delivering an old school MMO) since Brads death.
At least now that Everquest 3 has been announced, theres hopeAnd you know something else that's entirely predictable...
When they make all those changes, and the game flops (like every other WoW-clone has flopped) people will say, "This proves that there just isn't a market for old-school MMOs."
History repeats forever and ever, amen.
