Parcel at a neighbour not answering door

At the end of the day the courier is liable if they delivered it to a different address without your permission.. So you are entitled to a full refund.

I'd also report it as a theft to the police as well though.

I think this is the interesting point of it all. The recipient would likely just be saying "Well, someone has handed this to me, how is it theft?". The delivery company will be saying "Well, we delivered it, we have a signature".
Its theft because they're depriving the intended recipient of their property.
They will know it doesn't belong to them.

Half a gallon of unleaded through the letterbox will have them out of the house before you even have to strike the match. £5 well spent.

Had an interesting conversation with someone who I know well about this. They had received an Amazon delivery in error (they don't have an Amazon account) that was plainly addressed to someone else a few streets away (think it was the same house number). They were of the opinion that they could keep it, whereas I suggested that doing so would be knowingly depriving the legal owner of their property. In the end they did the right thing and took it to the correct address, where the recipient apparently seemed unimpressed by their good deed! So if it happens again I think they will just keep it. :-)

Why would elderly people who have almost ALL week to shop feel they need to do their main shop on the busiest time of the week?

Tradition, it's when everybody went big shopping in the old days and it's all ages.
We can now all go at any time we want, even during the night, but some people are stuck in their ways.
Saturday morning about 10am is when you'll see a great big queue leading from the A50, up a slip road on to a Tesco near me, it's rammed and even a massive car park can be full and hard to get a place, if they went at 3pm there would be nobody there.
They could go Sunday morning at 10am and it would be empty and so on.
Me and my wife go at around 11am on a Friday to ALDI, we're virtually on our own.
