Path of Exile(diablo clone)

How do you even get the mini map up? I've been running around blind for ages. Games a lot of fun, certainly beats Diablo3 in pretty much every respect, seems abit weird though the way the skill runes and passives work, I'm struggling to see a distinction between any of the classes.

Alt for the map, class wise they are essentially the same. The different starting point on the tree influences you build choices somewhat, then its up to you to plan your route through the tree based on what build your going for, its fun :)

I kinda like that the scenery gets in your way sometimes. Like when you're fighting next to trees and you can't see half the enemies. Just makes it that little bit more enjoyable compared to the scenery becoming invisible.

Tab is the default key for toggling the mini map. You can set the transparency of the minimap in the settings somewhere, I forget where. It's not a very good map, but it's usable.

Starting point on the passive skill tree and starting stats. That's it, but the starting point on the passive skill tree does have quite a large effect. If you take the starting point of one class but move into another class, you will in effect be a fair few levels behind. You could, for example, choose a marauder and head straight for the mage area of the passive skill forest, but you'd use a fair few passive skill points getting there so in effect you'd be a mage underpowered by maybe a dozen levels, with less intelligence and more strength. There are the intermediate classes, though, so you could start as a templar and head into the mage area only without losing much as a mage. Maybe you could gain enough as a fighter to offset the mage loss, depending on your playing style, equipment and gems.

It's a very flexible system. For example, 1H weapon and shield is generally considered significantly inferior to 2H weapon for a marauder. So someone saw that as a challenge to make a powerful 1H weapon and shield marauder, which they did by taking some skills from the mage area and building an aura-heavy multi-damage type marauder with a huge energy shield. They got to L83 hardcore, which is about as successful as you can get on PoE.

 I don't remember seeing anything like that.

there is no distinction. the only difference between the classes is where you start on the skill tree and your quest rewards and that's how they wanted it :)

I aint gonna complain, that sounds like a sick idea, leads to a ton of freedom especially if there is PvP? Get goaded into attacking the Marauder who turns out to be a kick ass wizard who rips you to shreds. :D

That sounds like stupid amounts of fun. One question though: can for example a Shadow get to level 50 and pick the EXACT same passives and use the exact same skill attacks as a Marauder at level 50, both of them being in the same gear, without the Marauder having an advantage? Are classes sorta just cosmetic then? Sounds so good!

You could achieve similar builds but not match them exact due to the starting points being different in the tree for each class. This means certain things like Int and spells would be closer to the classes that use mana and str and weap damage would be close to the melee. Each class has slightly different starting stats and different quest rewards.

Where has this game been all my life!? :D Now if only there was a way to be rid of Diablo 3...

I was gonna take a screenshot of the 'install/uninstall programs' page with an arrow pointing to Diablo III... but its not there

A little disappointed in my Claw Shadow atm. The life steal is barely enough to make a real impact even with 15% life steal on Dual Strike. One of my claws is a little weak and the other is nice but still doesn't have epic damage so I guess this is one reason. I've also not taken many damage nodes (because I still need to work on my ES for a start) so I'm not entirely sure where to go from here.

I also wasted 6 of my 8 fusings on the wrong item :(

Its because life leech is the percentage of damage dealt and not a percentage of life stolen, so if you don't deal a lot of damage yourself then you won't be gaining much life from the leech. If that makes sense, sorry too early in the morning. :D

Life on hit is an instant heal though.

I think he realizes that, he said one of his claws was weak. :(

Hopefully grabbing a few hours on this tonight, make my way through act 1 on cruel.

on low level you're probably better off with the life on hit and later on it'll be better with life leech. I still need to try life leech myself though probably would be better to have on my ranger rather than life on hit.

I'm playing as a Shadow (lv 7), i'm still in the early stages just killed that crab thing in the underground pool. Any general tips or tips as playing as a shadow?

I am a complete noob at this type of game.

Definitely too early :p

Well you dont' really have a choice in the matter there since low level Claws inherently have Life on Hit while higher level ones use Life Leech. But yes the point still stands.

I'm using the Mortem Morsu, a lvl34 unique Fright Claw which does have good dps (and 6% life leech) but its damage range is pretty extreme (around 20-90) and my second claw does less than half that as most of it is elemental damage, I just haven't found better. Currently got a 20hp Life on Hit gem attached to Dual Strike (which seems to have been nerfed in the last patch inadverently since I'm sure I'm gaining less than before) but I've just beaten Piety so the Life Leech gem at the start of Cruel isn't far off.

I have slacked off on damage nodes so far though which certainly hasn't helped so hopefully I can boost my damage with a decent claw purchase and some levels. I am in the market for a high quality (16+) Dual Strike (gets 4% crit chance per level) and a Blood Rage (0.2% life leech per level) but not having much luck yet.

as long as you can get through to merciless, lategame you rarely need more than about 2-6% life leech before you hit the limit you can steal, so dont worry about it too much. definitely dont overdo it

There won't be a limit as I plan on getting Vaal Pact which instantly applies Life Leech which bypasses the regen limit so I can generate as much as I like (I seriously hope this is the case, I have no reason to doubt it).

And I think you might have the wrong idea about how it works (if you do and were referring to something else then at least this explanation will be helpful for others :p). Going from everything I've read, the Leech effects are capped at a certain percentage of your maximum per second (Life is 20% of max per second, Mana is 12.5% of max per second) but it doesn't matter how much you leech, it will apply every single point for as long as it can until you hit 100% at which point it stops and you need to leech again.

I've seen it happen plenty of times on my Ranger. You can hit a bunch of enemies with lots of Rain of Arrows and your mana continues to regen rapidly long after you ran out of targets just because the amount is stacked.
