Path of Exile(diablo clone)

Been playing this game. It's good, amazing for a free to play. I like the fact it's not "pay to win" like so many "free" games.

I am struggling with Act3 though. The difficulty ramped way up and I'm regretting some of the choices I made in the tree. I also kinda wish the camera was zoomed out more and there was a better UI and little bit of character customization at the beginning.

If I remember rightly (I haven't played for months), you can change the amount of zoom.

The difficulty level has big jumps, that's for sure. The really big jumps are changes in difficulty level. You can be death on legs at the end of normal and then squishy snack food when you move to the beginning of cruel...and it's an even bigger jump when you move from cruel to merciless. I think the devs have tuned the difficulty level ramping down since I finished the beta on merciless, so maybe it isn't as bad as it was then, but I had a hell of a shock from cruel to merciless. Watch for the side areas on higher difficulty levels - they're jacked up a lot more. I strolled through nearly all of act 3 normal because I'd done some grinding and had decent kit, but I got stunned and killed within seconds of entering the fetid pool on cruel.

It's definitely not a game for new or casual players to this genre. I enjoy but it seems very specific, you really need to know what the hell you're doing because the game doesn't tell you at all. [..]

I wouldn't say that it's very specific - there are many viable builds - but I agree that it's not the right game for casual players or for those new to this genre unless they're willing to research first. You do need to know what you're doing.

I test-played the game for a little while, decided I liked it a lot and then read forums and guides for an hour or so to get information about skills and stats and suchlike before progressing more than a few levels. I initially copied a build posted by an experienced player (one of the ground slam marauder builds), following their skill tree level by level. It was only after I'd played for dozens of hours that I deviated from it and then (after a respec given due to significant changes), made my own build (still ground slam marauder, but different).

I don't play it any more, but it was well worth the $20 I sent them for it.

Bloody server broke again :(

I'd just nearly cleared Solaris Temple level 2 and was probably closing in on the WP... plus there was a 6 socketed item on the floor!

While that is annoying, you probably didn't lose as much as you might think. Items with 6 sockets aren't usually useful. I sold almost all the ones I found to vendors (you get 7 jeweller's orbs - quite valuable). I only kept 1 and not for long.

The links between sockets count for much more. For example, a 4L item is almost certainly more useful than a 6S item with fewer links, very likely even if the 6S item has 3 linked sockets. Unlinked sockets are only useful for holding skill gems that you use without any support gems but almost every skill is something you'd want to use support gems with, even if it's only mana cost reduction. Teleport is the only skill gem I can think of that doesn't benefit from support gems (because the mana cost is irrelevant).

That was kinda the point. It's effectively 7 jeweller's left on the floor. It made up for it this morning when Gruest and Hargan were both selling a 6s item at least.

Started playing this earlier for a bit. Up to level 5 and seems alright, certainly need to read up more about how gems and gear works compared to diablo3. Got a few gems that my char can't do anything with, should I keep them on empty slots or just sell them?

I'm a witch with fireball and firetrap at the moment. Can also do the ice blast attack. Do skills and gear level up as you do (I know gems do) or is it like diablo3 in that the gear get at say level 5 is useless by level 10?

Gems level up with experience, max of level 20.
Any spare gems you have that you think you might use, put them in your gear to level.

Look for linked items to put multiple gems to use, like;

Fireball - Added Fire - Lesser Multiple Projectiles for an example (R-R-G)

Any spare gems you get at the beginning you can just put in your stash for later characters. Example would be if you got a melee skill while levelling a caster built character. I wouldn't recommend putting it in your gear to level it up as the level of the gem also increases so when you come to use it on a new melee character you'll need to wait until that level to equip it.

The equipment doesn't level up with you, the stats stay the same, so that piece of armour you get at level 5 may still be good at level 10 but there will be better ones out there obviously. The item level of a piece of gear affects what stats it will have i.e. that level 10 dagger may be able to roll say +2-5% attack speed but you find a level 20 one and that can roll +2-10% attack speed (not actually number by the way, you can find the level ranges and values on the PoE website)
You can find out the item level of a piece of equipment by left clicking so it's on your cursor and typing /itemlevel in chat.

Started playing again at the weekend, seems I can't stay away from this game! Proceeded to RIP my 56 Scion almost instantly, so rolled a new one straight away and am currently 39, just got into Cruel last night (Nemisis League).

Anyone been taking part in the races?

Up to 85 points now I think. Was half a level off hitting 21 on the BM Famine party (solo). Was great fun.

I really need to prepare more for some of them. Generally just picking Scion because get any half decent 2H and Spectral Throw wrecks things. Problem is I'm not really looking into what stat requirements certain items need and Scion can very easily ignore all stat nodes early on. Gonna do the Champion Descent tonight so I should really look into what the chests actually drop and prepare for it in advance.

yes scion is a bit OP early on, due to some of the nodes you can get.

if it's a normal race i usually just go marauder for leap slam after the prison :D

descent i haven't got a fixed pick/build.

in other news
finally made the switch to CI on my cold crit caster after i found this chest

Nice... you gonna take a dive and drop Exalted on it and hope for resistances or leave it as it is?

I did start out with Marauder with my first few races. First one was a Descent Champions and actually did quite well, got just past the 3rd boss. Then a regular race. Then another Descent Champions and got wrecked by the Totem this time. Restarted as a Scion and destroyed it so easily it was just stupid.

It never seems all that fast early on even if you do get Leap Slam for later. Just been using Scion as my go-to racer instead. Ranger seems decent if I could work it out but so reliant on a good bow. Scion you just grab any random 2H, hope for a decent +damage roll and wreck things.

i havent decided yet. resists are maxed however my other gear is not aimed at CI so it will need upgrading. i also only got 3 exalted orbs at the moment not sure if it's worth it. i got a spare vaal regalia (ilvl76) in my box which i probably will keep rolling until i get something nice.

marauder is fairly slow till you get leap slam. then it's only an issue of having a decent 2H and you'll be faster than scion.

Cheers for the replies, the linking of Gems and similar sounds great. Should be far more exciting than Diablo3 once I've leveled up a bit. Just need a few more punchy skills at the moment to spice things up a bit.

So far the base gameplay doesn't quite feel as polished as Diablo3 does but I imagine most of that is due to not having any skills other than some ranged attacks. Once I have some movement skills and AOE (from player) style moves or the ability to set up totems that fire it's going to be great :D

Does Leap Slam maintain its effective 'group kill' potential then for the duration of most races? I used it on my Marauder when I restarted the game in Domination but I wasn't really thinking about the early game effectiveness at the time since I hadn't considered trying the race season.

The main thing that puts me off about Leap Slam is I know it causes desync which is far more likely to cause death in the middle of a mob than throwing spectral weapons from a distance.

that's true, any decent 2h will do with leap slam to one shot most things though, also it's the fastest way to travel :D

Up to level 22 now. Getting quite hooked on this game! Still feel it's lacking a few things that Diablo3 did really well, the spell graphics/sounds seem less punchy than Diablo often did. But the variation is great and I'm really looking forward to playing about some more with support gems and such. I need to rejig my 2 wands I'm using, as I've just realised that the extra critical damage gem would be better suited with the other 2 skills. But I'll sort that tomorrow! :)

Sounds you are in act 2, mainly forests, just you wait until act 3, in particular the run upto Piety and the newer act 3x.

Very good graphicially and challenging, you will enjoy them.

Hit 70 last night, which makes my current Scion my highest character. All the others have died somewhere in the 60s, just like disco did.

Need to max out my resists before I venture into maps though so I forsee a lot of grinding in my near future for gear. I managed to loot an Exalt just before I logged off in Docks, so this should allow me to purchase a nice weapon too :)
