Path of Exile(diablo clone)

What kind of Beyond stash have you got, in terms of currency/uniques? I generally choose my next build based on 1) easy to get gems that sound fun or 2) a build-around unique that dropped randomly for me.

Or be hella brave and make a summoner using a uniques-only Animate Guardian :D

Started playing properly, level 12 witch, not sure what skills to be going for but Physical damage and spawning minions is working for me I guess aha.

If anybody wants to assist, ThaReaperGuy is my steam IGN is ThaTainted.

I died.

Was farming Cruel docks and a beyond pack spawned in the middle of a large pack of mobs I had just killed. They had detonate dead and promptly blew my poor witch off the face of Wraeclast before I could react hah.

Re-rolled a tornado shot crit ranger now and in Act 2 cruel. I give it a few days until i'm dead again :p

I died trying to kill the Act 1 Boss, Merveil 3 times, will I have lost anything (was in the rampage league) as I just respawned outside and went back in.

Most people seem to be getting through the game without dying at all, just seems to be the bosses that beat me badly.

In Rampage, normal difficulty, you will not have lost anything. Late game you would lose a bit of XP, but not any character levels (not really a major issue unless you die a LOT or are really high level, where it can represent a few hours of play!)

Merveil is much easier with higher cold resistance - you can usually pick up a ring or two from the female vendor in town, if you've not found any.

One thing to note - if you have an auras (like Haste, Wrath, Vitality, Clarity etc.... the ones that reserve a % of your mana for a continuous effect) you need to remember to turn them back on each session and whenever you die or move the gem. It's easy to forget.

Another thing loads of new players (me included) do is undervalue "+%health" nodes in the skill tree. Many builds take lots and lots of those, even in 'softcore' leagues like Rampage.

May need to have a look at the skill tree properly as I'm just taking 1 step at a time picking what seems like a good idea at the time and it's kinder getting scattered.

I think I had a Aura on my shield which provided protection, which I have been forgetting to put back on from time to time aha, and I haven't even looked at resistance items properly, which I will do tonight I think.

Thanks for the tips.

Another tip I learnt:

Try to be more discerning with your tree selection.
Let's say you start as a ranger and want to spectral throw. Now majority of the points are close to hand. The real juicy stuff like resists and two handed and resist/hp fall under maurauder on otherside of the tree. The higher you level the slower Xp rolls in. If your not careful, you can get to level 50 and the wait for the 1point for a superb skill in the tree which could take ages.

I found it better to get my route done early after grabbing essentials in my build then paving the way for the far away skills.

I hope that made some sense. ;)

Make's perfect sense, think I need to figure out what skills work best for what types of characters, as I don't know any aha!

But again, thanks for the tip, does make sense to get skills selected that way.

Every skill works with every class, thats the beauty of this game. Its just all about the passive tree really. Some nodes work well with some skills, and certain classes start closer to those skills on the passive tree.

Looks that way indeed, however I'm no good with games like this as I've never played them much before so creating characters & understanding certain skills and buffs is lost on me at the moment aha, but I do want to get my hands dirty with this one, as I'm really enjoying it.

Just need to get dug in and play, which I'll do now!

On the website there are subforums for the classes, best to look for "cheap" or "newbie friendly" builds as these dont require having a boatload of in game currency or any special items to start with, but theres plenty of starting up guides in there.

Summoner (necromancer) is a very easy starter build, so are dual flame totems, not sure what others are good for someone starting out. The thing is while those are 2 good builds to start with theyre not so good if you plan to map with others as they have low dps, just something to bear in mind

been tempted to get into this game for a while.

Ive never played but this video seems to give an idea on tree/skills.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWs7vAR-WzA

might be handy for you mate.

There's just been a big update to the game, so a lot of the passive skill tree has been updated and rearranged - Id' take anything in the video with a pinch of salt (if it deals with specifics). PoE really does reward playing for a bit before researching anything too much - you need to know what kind of skills you find fun before you can really plan a build.

One more thing - your first character will almost certainly not be your successful character. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, as nearly every player has one character that ends up with an unworkable build, but it means when you start a new one you have some currency, some gear you can re-use, and most importantly some ideas of what you want to try out :D

Just watched it and it seems good enough. Only big change is there has been a new class since that video released. Covers the basics pretty well though.

Aaaaaaand another one bites the dust. Just got into Act1 merciless and picked up a quest from Vorici to kill a target. Turned out to be another detonate dead caster lady and I ran over a pack of corpses.....D'oh.

Time to plan another build, thinking maybe crit ground slam marauder or a crit spectral throw ranger possibly.

My current is a ground slam templar - lots of fun once you get the angles sorted in your head. Only Act 2 normal, but already noticing that (like most attack based builds) you need to stay on top of weapon upgrades. I think I will be using the weapon/sash/stone recipe a LOT for this guy.

Was planning to go physical/stunlock - is Crit a good option for ground slam builds? I've not really looked into it.

It's pretty good if you're using the Herald of Ice/Fire as the crits can prolif good burn overkill damage to other mobs for good AoE and the freeze shatters mobs for more AoE damage. Plus you'll be critting for large amounts of physical damage so the stuns will be coming thick and fast (well, not that fast with 2h but you get the picture)

Found a 5-link Rigvald's Charge 2h sword before I died so could make good use of that for spectral throw until I find a better top end weapon.
