Path of Exile(diablo clone)

Had my first hour on this last night. Quite enjoyed it but found it a bit clunky at times and not as slick as I expected, is it just me getting used to it and things are actually slick and fast when you play well or are there done mechanic problems?

Good game though, rolled a templar (no idea what is good or bad but he sounded interesting) and I tend to sink a few hours in.

Combat can feel a bit clunky and repetitive early on. Once you get a decent number of levels, some interesting skills/unique items and a bit more of a feel for what skill combos are viable then combat becomes a lot more entertaining. Rolling multiple characters later on is very much recommended.

The 'clunky' feel is typical of the early game - as you get more attack/move speed modifiers on equipment everything starts to pick up a bit more. Keep an eye out for a quicksilver flask on your travels and see how that suits you. Melee also tends to feel a bit clunky. I tend to make liberal use of the Shift key (attack in place, prevents accidentally running to the cursor).

In terms of class, everyone can do everything until really high level, so whatever feels good probalby works fine for a first character.

Lost my level 73 arc witch last week in Beyond league which sucked, was really liking the build and had acquired some decent gear for her too :(
Re-rolled and currently just going a standard Tornado shot ranger, level 69 at the moment and started doing some maps. but i give myself about 10 more levels at most before I die from something dumb!

For the league he is playing, beyond, when you die you get put into standard mode and have to make a new character again to play in beyond. Most people generally just give up with that character if it dies in beyond and start fresh. I'm not too into that so I just play rampage, where you lose 10% xp of your current level when you die on the highest difficulty, but you can't go down a level, just to 0 xp.

Its not as bad dying in the standard leagues compared to hardcore, but if you are level 80+ losing 10% xp is a few hours worth of killing mobs, so its still pretty bad.

I'm playing Rampage so at least I don't lose my character :p

So what are the benefits to plYing in beyond if you can lose your character?

The challenge of it really, thats all. Beyond has a few different things too, like rampage has killstreak, beyond get this instead.

Players in the Beyond League have to deal with a race of extradimensional demons invading Wraeclast. When you kill monsters in close proximity to one another, small portals start to open; get enough of those open together, and a larger portal opens up, spawning more powerful monsters. If those happen close together, an even larger portal opens up, complete with a unique boss that's designed to be extremely difficult to kill.

It just makes it a lot more challenging and the fact you can lose your character to one mistake.

Being top 100 on the Beyond ladder is considerably more kudos than being top 100 in a non-hardcore league :D

Also, the level of excitement knowing you could brick your character with one false move is quite hard to explain, but very real.

I usually play Hardcore - this league I am in Rampage because I found the killstreaks more fun than the invading portals, but I still tend to build and play like I'm in hardcore.

yes and this is why most HC players play pansy builds to be safe.
rather play softcore and play more recklessly :p

Just got onto act 2, killed the Siren woman at the end of act 1. That was such a difficult fight. Was running in circles most the time and occasionally hitting her before running away again. Only thing that saved me was the mobs she summoned, with my lifesteal I invested in they were a nice free heal to carry me through fight :p

Nice tip to help with boss fights is if you use a portal scroll and go through it and back again, you'll get a free full heal and all your flasks refreshed. Useful for long fights with bosses where you can't get your flasks refilled.

Nice tip :)

Thank you!

How many of the Vaal special zones should I have found in act 1? Found 2, one in the prison and one in the zone where the way is blocked that eventually leads you to shipwreck coast.

Sounds about right. They are not too common but worth doing. Some of the vaal gems are really fun though, personal favourite is Vaal Cyclone which sucks all nearby enemies into your cyclone. So much fun.

If you make it to level 60 though, always do every Vaal zone after that, they have a chance to drop a Vaal Fragment called Sacrifice at Midnight, there are 3 others but the midnight one is the most valuable and will get you a bit of currency.
