Paying parents rent!

My parents never charged me either but that doesn't mean I don't understand those that do, If your parents are trying to teach you the value of money then haggle and prove that you are learning ;)

If they are simply too skint to let you freeload, just pay what they ask or move out :)

No because they rather I save the money instead.. which I do. By the end of the year I will have enough saved to put down a 10% deposit on a first property.

Jeez man, they're your parents, not strangers. Would you be happy taking rent off your kids?

If im eating my parents food, using their electicity, etc etc.. then i think it's only right. Especially as they paid all my bills whilst i lived away when at University.

Now im earning a good full time wage, i think it's only fair i should pay rent.

Can't believe some parents charge their children rent, my parents would even dream of such a thing.

Mine can only Dream of that kind of thing :p

Dad lives 500kms away and My mum knows she can only borrow money and if she does she has to pay it back and there would be know way she would get rent money from me :p

im not getting made to pay rent till im out of education :) hopefully going uni next year so wont be here
That's basically how it is with my parents. Although my brother is going back into education, it's only part time so I think he'll still be paying rent.

Saying that I would understand if my parents made me pay rent during the summer. I'm such a lazy sponger it wouldn't surprise me.

Exactly. It's disgusting. My parents wouldn't even consider it. In fact I find it abhorrent that parents would treat their children that way.
lol do me a favour... the attitude of you and jamoor is what most people will find disgusting :)

That's funny! :D

jamoor do you still live with your parents then? I saw your thread in Motors where you're looking to buy a BMW 530d... I guess not paying rent you can afford it :)

I used to pay £60 and now i have to pay £80 another £10 more and i'd be paying half my income...

It's my JSA money aswell :S That's all i get...

How much are you supposed to pay? Is it 1/3 of whatever you earn?

To be honest i dont mind paying towards the household as i consume so much power/food/space and also have my washing and cooking done so i get it easy. £70 i thought was reasonable and just wanted to compare it.

On the note that parents shouldnt charge us, i think that its only fair, i get paid more than my mum (shes only a TA) so if they have brought me up costing thousands i think that paying them back sounds about right. If you dont pay your parents then it might hit you hard when you do have to pay for stuff out of your pocket.

:)

Bang on. I would hazard a guess that most parents charge 'rent', not because they need the dosh, but to give you an appreciation of what life outside the family home will bring. In a nutshell, nothing is free.

TBH its just difference in cultures by the sounds of it, 2 of my cousins are 30ish, are married and have kids.
They still "live with their parents" in the same house, but tbh there is a point where it changes when their parents are living with them.

Well that depends - who owns the house?

I've lived with my parents and for a while my parents lived with me. I paid them rent but they didn't pay me. They've spend enough already tbh. :)
