Hate to point this out. But posting on a forum full of die hard PC gamers doesn't really reduce bias. ;)

Ive seen a lot of people on this forum that have a PC and console so its not that 'bias'.

Like myself I've had all current generation consoles and my PC. I like both but it really depends on the game genre.

I seriously think consoles will either have to go or be updated soon because hey are seriously holding back gaming advancement.

Like yourself, I own all consoles. Disagree with your last point though. Innovation is holding back games advancement, console technology is by no means to blame. ;)

There's plenty of great innovative games still being made. But the majority, lazy developer (usually driven by a greedy publisher) cutting corners to make a quick buck on a fool proof tried and tested idea, are the real problem.

/flame proofs on.

Great point.

Seeing as my goal is to become a game designer I've always liked these type of comments they give you a great idea of what the public want. For example Amnesia is a great game and its a fresh idea and only 5 people made it, thats what is amazing about it. But companies like EA are destroying franchises all the time. C&C and now Crysis (maybe) its just slightly annoying on the consumer level.

I want to see some more games like Amnesia which are actually finished products.

i've watched the video and disagree with most of what he is saying especially that fps's are now the domain of consoles.

but as you are after stats to put up to your friend here is one- http://bfbcs.com/pc

as far as i know the battlefield stats site automatically registers every player on every system and tracks their stats so you can tell just how many people are playing bad company 2 which is one of the biggest and most popular fps's.

as you can see the number of pc users is almost bang in the middle of ps3 and xbox 360 users but the amount of people actually playing the game on the pc is around 40% higher than the ps3 and around 80% higher than the xbox 360 and there is not far off double the amount of servers available for the pc compared to either the ps3 or xbox 360.

so it looks to me that the person who made the video has it completely wrong that consoles have overtook the pc for playing fps's.

Wonderful :)

I love BC2 to bits :D

i dont think that pc games are dying, they are just changing to be more like console games
we get a lot less exclusives than we did in the late 90's because its cheaper for the developers to make a game on a console and then port it to pc

the ports have been getting a lot better tho so as long as the games are good im happy :)

This has caused a storm over on The Escapist forums (where I frequent/live).

What I took form the video was that he says the PC isn't "dying" but rather that it's broadening. The line between Console, Phone, Laptop, Desktop, Arcade, TV, car, fridge, toilet, etc. is blurring and eventually the desktop gaming computer will become more and more niche as computing becomes ubiquitous.

A lot of people seemed to take his thoughts as "PC games suck and nobody makes them any more since consoles are so much more powerful and cooler". Which is not the case at all. The show is designed to spark discussion (and it has evidently succeeded in that task) so it was presented in a fairly "fan bait" way.

Good post. :) Reflects the thoughts I came away from the video with.

what is holding back gaming is lack of technology, PC/HD TV are way too basic right now, we've only just started developing realistic games.

but true 3D realism wont be here for at least another 10 years, you think Crysis looks good ?........... yes it looks great compared to FEAR; but compared to looking out of the window it looks total crap, as for AI; that's dreadful right now, they're all mental retards that you fight.

innovative games?............ not really, that's why we have COD 4, CRYSIS 2, DOOM 4, FEAR 3, but this lack of bottle effects console too, it's just the way humans are, we copy each other, hence all cars have 4 wheels ;)

Photo realism does nothing for me tbh. Shiny graphics are nice to see, but they don't make a game fun by themselves. You don't need a quad core, tri-SLI gaming monster to enjoy well thought out solid gameplay or a good story.

I'll happily play something like VVVVVV because it's fun, over playing something that looks good that bores me.

That's just four generic copy and paste FPS games though...

On the other hand you could have a look at Minecraft, Demon's Souls, Heavy Rain, Amnesia, SMB or plenty of others.

As I said in the post you quoted; The majority of developers, particularly the big ones, are playing sheep. There's still plenty of innovation out there, particularly from the smaller indie development teams.

I'm with Code13.

Eventually you just won't need that high tower case in a corner of the room, everything will be stored remotely and streamed, I'm not just talking onlive here I'm talking watching iplayer on your tv, youtube on your phone and your fridgefreezer doing your online shopping for you. It's always evolving, and I just can't see us using PCs as we know them in around 20 years or so.

In the mean time PCs are fine. There is less risk developing for consoles, the PC is now only just starting to leave consoles behind again as DX11 is starting to come more and more into play.

I think BFBC2 bucks the trend in FPS games tbh it has a very strong and loyal PC fanbase and is one of the few developers who puts extra effort into the PC, I am pretty sure that for the majority of cross platform FPS games consoles have the higher numbers.
