Charlie Brooker has a great article here.

As much as I like Brooker and find him funny (check out his prank phonecalls from when he worked at PCZone, very funny) when he says things like...
then I think, "Why has this rubbish aspirational ornament only got one mouse button?"
...You realise he probably hasn't used a Mac since about 1995 and is just spouting rubbish.

Of course. I'm quite a Brooker fan, the recent series of Screenwipe on BBC4 was worth my license fee for the year.

Actually the reason that Microsoft probably don't put out their own line of anti mac adverts is that they really don't see macs as a threat. When you comapre the two mac really are a bit player. 280m Windows PCs vs 5m Macs last year. Do you really think MS care?
Yeah I actually think they do. Of course microsoft are the bigger company. They have been the only real choice for a few decades. Its only now Mac are really competing.

For the record. Games are programmed with PC in mind. Todays MacPros are better capable at gaming than a PC. Its just writing the games for it. I can assure you that is gonna happen.

I'm planning on getting a macbook when I start my masters. I'll load office onto it and will use it purely as a work machine. I could buy a cheap vista based laptop, but I'd be more likely to spend forever playing with settings and drivers, playing with how it looked and playing games. As a pure work machine macs seem simple, clean and reliable.

Thats the thinking behind my MBP purcase next week. :)

Consider my curiousity piqued. In what regard are MacPros more capable than PCs? Given that they use an Intel CPU, one of (or in the case of a 7300GT up to 4 of): a 7300GT, an X1900XT or a Quadro 4500, expensive ECC Ram, ordinary SATA and optical drives. All of which are available with PCs and in fact have been surpassed by many. One thing I will give them is they are bleedin' heavy having carried one for a mate. If anyone wants to check them out specifications are here. More games may well be programmed or ported for Macs but I wouldn't suggest that makes them more capable, merely that the market share is sufficient to make it worthwhile.

280m vs 5m, oh yes, really competing there...

Why is a MacPro better capable? With their new Intel Processors they are pretty much just a PC with a different OS on them. They are generally less capable than a similarly priced PC.

The Mac market share is on the way up, especially in the laptop computing market where anyone who is anyone wants a MacBook (Pro). Apple are a significant threat to Microsoft in the operating system sector, and Microsoft have reason to be concerned. You can't just pull out a single current (source?) set of market share figures then come to all kinds of ludicrous conclusions based on that information

The only reasons for not getting a mac are:

1. You have no money
2. You have no taste
3. You are stubborn and unwilling to accept change
4. You couldn't recognise a decent operating system if it hit you in the face
5. You're bowled over by the amazing innovations in Windows Vista
6. You need applications that are unavailable on OS X and don't want to faff about with dual booting

Personally, I wouldn't want to be any of those ;)

Correct me if i'm wrong but I thought (assuming XP is installed) that the Windows applications running on it are accessible through OS X and with minimal performance hits.

Plus when you buy a macbook from a store, you get support far in excess of anywhere else.

You can come in anytime, chat with people about the mac, can buy pro-care (best support around imo). etc.

You may need a tin foil hat and a flame proof suit. :p
Donned, and I'm climbing a tree as we speak :p

Thing is, with a mac I'm 50% more efficient at flame baiting. Anyone who responds using a "PC" is just wasting their time ;)
