PC v Mac adverts

Plus when you buy a macbook from a store, you get support far in excess of anywhere else.

You can come in anytime, chat with people about the mac, can buy pro-care (best support around imo). etc.

Can I come in... And steal your staff discount? ;)

Correct me if i'm wrong but I thought (assuming XP is installed) that the Windows applications running on it are accessible through OS X and with minimal performance hits.

You can use parallels in OS X ... install XP in a VM and use coherence mode, basically the windows applications can be put in your dock, then you simply open it running natively in OS X :)

it's really quite cool

I do a lot of musical development and I can honestly say I prefer pc's, I learned on macs but i've found pc's to be more versatile and easier to work with. Especially now i've converted to a firewire interface.

People who say macs are better for video or musical editing need to be slapped.

Donned, and I'm climbing a tree as we speak :p

You might be flameproof, the tree isn't. Poor planning skills - must be a Mac user - QED. ;)

I'll just sit myself comfortably in the #3 camp thanks, change isn't always for the better. Plus the PC does everything I need it to and I've already got one, negating any need to 're-learn' an OS. :)

I own a high spec PC, and IBM laptop and a macbook. The adverts are generally correct.

People who haven't owned both should really shut up on this debate.
The adverts clearly aren't generally correct. As many have pointed out already, there's a lot of misinformation and omission in the Mac ads. But then, that's advertising for you.

And I don't see why anyone has to have owned a Mac in order to qualify for this apparent debate. It'd be a pretty stupid way of finding out you don't like them.

Most people who use Macs have previously (or still are) using PCs so we are more qualified in saying which is better.
Because you're not at all going to be biased, are you? It seems certain Mac users like to try and remove as many PC users as possible from any kind of debate. Something PC users don't and can't - I can't imagine there are (m)any Mac users who have never come into contact with Windows.

For the record. Games are programmed with PC in mind. Todays MacPros are better capable at gaming than a PC. Its just writing the games for it. I can assure you that is gonna happen.
What a load of silliness.

I use Macs plenty - two of my housemates (one's just left) have them and I end up using them for odd things here and there quite a lot, which means I've become fairly competent with them. Some features I like (Spotlight is nice), and then there's other things that I feel Windows does better. Personally, I don't buy into the myth that "Once you use a Mac, you never go back"; I have no desire nor reason to swap my very nice PC for a stupidly-expensive Mac equivalent (it'd have to be a MacPro, after all).

Did consider getting an iBook about a year ago when I was in the market for a notebook (wanted a Mac to play with a bit), but chose against it based on specs and cost and bought a Dell instead. MacBooks came out shortly after which would have been a nice option, but I'd be using Windows more often and so there's still certain restrictions on the MacBook hardware (i.e. single mouse button) that would annoy me. The MacBook size is fantastic though.

The Mac market share is on the way up, especially in the laptop computing market where anyone who is anyone wants a MacBook (Pro). Apple are a significant threat to Microsoft in the operating system sector, and Microsoft have reason to be concerned. You can't just pull out a single current (source?) set of market share figures then come to all kinds of ludicrous conclusions based on that information

The only reasons for not getting a mac are:

1. You have no money
2. You have no taste
3. You are stubborn and unwilling to accept change
4. You couldn't recognise a decent operating system if it hit you in the face
5. You're bowled over by the amazing innovations in Windows Vista
6. You need applications that are unavailable on OS X and don't want to faff about with dual booting

Personally, I wouldn't want to be any of those ;)

Or maybe they think Windows is better

As for no taste? Having the same laptop/desktop as everyone makes you look like you have taste?

People that buy Desktops from a big shop are silly...

People that buy Macs just want something that works without any faff on.

People that customise their Desktop to what they need have a specific interest in computers/games/creative needs.

Mac laptops are not all that, I remember one woman on a plane spouting on about her Macbook untill I pulled out my Fujitsu lifebook.

7. The (Windows) PC does everything just as well (and more). :)

It's just a computer. Take your OS of preference. Use it.

If Macs work for you, great! If not, use Windows or Linux. It's as simple as that really. I'm in the latter camp myself.

Its not sillyness at all. You just cant accept a brilliant system like a Mac. I never said a ibook would run games better but a quad MacPro with expansion for 4x Graphics cards and if you are bleeding money 16Gig Ram ?Excuse me how many PCs are that expandable?

MacPro's have already been posted to run Vista very well (wonderful news considering the OS is appalling)

The myth that a MacPro is stupidly expensive? Now your been silly. Leading class design using high quality aluminium with clip in hdd bays and no fannying cables. Looks the cutting edge in contempory design and no stupid crappy plastic, discotec lights and a fan system to stop the thing melting.

You pay for quality. I bought my current system from this very store less than a year ago and it cost me near 1k in upgrades alone. mobo, cpu, ram, gfx keyboard/mouse etc. For 1600 quid I can have a base spec macpro with a copy of their latest OS.

Infact I can go on all day but I wont because I refuse to let a silly debate take up my day.
