People that pay by phone and don’t have cards on them.

I got caught out by this problem earlier in the year, never again. I always take my wallet with me now.

Exactly the same thing happened to me. I was in an off license, phone payment refused to go through even though I'd done it several times before. Had to leave the goods and go home.

I moved from a big bulky grandad wallet to a slim wallet probably 5 years ago.

Like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07G3DXTDL/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Slips into my front pocket easily and holds enough cards to be useful but not enough to get bogged down with loads of useless reward cards etc.

Space in the middle for a few notes folded up, say £100 if I really needed it but rarely carry cash.

Because of this I never leave the house without my wallet anyway, but I can't remember the last time I got my card out of my wallet instead of using Apple Pay tbh.

Phone payments are really glitchy. Contactless is still where it's at.
They shouldn't be glitchy at all. I've never found myself in a situation where a phone/watch payment has failed because it's glitched and I've had to revert to the card.

This morning, contactless went down in my store and a few other shops down the same road.

People who pay on their phones with Apple or Google Pay were moaning that they don’t carry their cards anymore.

Why?

Contactless can go down anytime and some shops don’t do contactless.

These people have got only themselves to blame for being stupid.

I’m being practical

We have issues woth phone payments on buses. Occasionally their bank will refuse the transaction when using the phone but if they then use the actual card the payment goes through. We've been told that it's some form of verification because we don't have PIN pads.

Phone payments /are/ contactless payments.

The bus payment not working mentioned above is user error. If they read the Google/Apple Pay materials they would have seen that from time to time you will be prompted to fully unlock your phone and enter your PIN to authenticate that you are who you say you are.It happens rarely as most people don't rinse through loads of payments on any given day but it is just one of those extra security steps. You would still need to do the same with a card based contactless payment, but have to put the card in and enter said PIN.

So can card machines so the argument is a bit void anyway.

In my experience of actually buying and installing PDQs in a ferry terminal and onboard ships, I have seen either side of the machine go down, if not both at the same time in equal measure.

I have not taken my physical card anywhere for years, all payments using mobile contactless (Google or Samsung Pay). There is no payment limit, it just works. Rare times it goes down, but they are just that, rare.

I never have cash or cards on me anyway. Oh no, I won’t be able to pay. I’m sure life will go on.

One less thing to get stolen/lose when I’m out and about.

The entire Orange fibre backbone fell over here for a day after a lightning strike. No working EPOS anywhere across the lower half of the Department, so if you didn’t have cash, the shops couldn’t make a sale.

I have a very slimline wallet these days, but always carry €20 cash. Couldn’t be without a wallet as I need to carry ID and a driving license around.

Got a Trove for my birtdoy after seeing it recommended in the GD wallet thread. It contains debit card, credit card, driving licence and a couple of emergency tenners.

Needless to say, I won't be leaving a shop empty handed!

Indeed. There is a monetary limit and a number-of-transactions limit. It will happen on a phone or card, basically stops you doing endless contactless transactions forever and ever without authenticating. (Kinda useful if you don't notice your card is lost or something, for example).

Now I've swapped to iPhone I'm using Apple Pay more than I ever used Google Wallet. I still carry a wallet for backup and am definitely interested in one of those slim card holder ones.

I have to say, Apple Express Transit contactless for the tube is amazing.

Not always user error. I use a Barclay debit card and it's the Barclays app that makes the payment, it's nothing to do with Google Pay. Clearly in my case there was a glitch with that version of the app and the payment system.

EDIT: I would recommended you actually read the entire Twitter thread linked, it's full of comments from people who have had problems paying with the app. Some of it is quite amusing.

I don't think it does happen with a phone/watch, at least with Apple Pay, I've never been forced to use my card and PIN. Very occasionally I decide to use my physical card (for example through a drive through where it's tricky to reach out the window to pay with my watch) and from time to time, it's forced me to authenticate but that's never, ever happened with Apple Pay. I guess the logic there is that the device has to be unlocked to work. If someone stole my phone or the watch off my wrist, they wouldn't be able to use it to pay because it's locked. In that respect, these electronic methods are more secure than a plastic card.

Nope. Even fully unlocking the phone doesn't work. Our ticket machine provider has tested this issue numerous times. Every time it's rejected only presenting the card works when the phone/watch has been rejected.

Most often than not it's a Lloyds bank.

I use Google pay for everything usually and have for years, but I still normally have my wallet and cards with me too

Yup you have transport card feature on Google and Samsung Pay too :p

Yes this is a Barclays issue, not a contactless issue with the way the system works etc. You can use Barclays cards via Samsung Pay+, it's free and you can add any bank card to it and use it via Samsung Pay as normal. That is what I do. The whole Curve system is just better anyway with lots more features and cashback incentives.

For ref, I don't need to read the thread, I have been using the Barclays app for contactless payments for ages anyway just as I have the other apps. I know it has issues, that's why I don't use it as a primary and instead use Samsung Pay with my debit card as it's just superior.

What's the point? So you can pay 2 seconds faster?

Does it even store your card information, so you can set up direct debits?

Just sounds like stupid gimmick to me. Eggs in one basket and all that. Probably another avenue for your funds to become compromised as well.

Yes, that's correct I believe. Because you're authenticating with the phone (ie unlocking) it counts as authenticated. I wonder if Express Transit will work indefinitely (doubt it).

Does it work without authenticating? Apple Express Transit means when you turn it on in the app (you select one of your credit cards), you literally wave your phone at the reader like you would a credit card and it lets you in instantly. It's not storing a transit card inside it like an oyster. But importantly, no need to unlock the phone, or load the app etc. Net result is on the tube, you're as fast through the gates as someone with a credit card or oyster card. Last time I checked Google or Samsung didnt offer that. But I might be wrong.

That's the standard for a transport card in any payment ecosystem!

What do you do on those rare occassions it goes down and you want to buy something, just walk away without your items?
