People waiting for your car park space

I have noticed this too, been in shops at all hours and parked in the middle of huge empty spaces, when I come out there are cars all around so tight you can hardly open the door.

I Don't think I would chastise anyone for it though lol.

This does my nut in, I'm one of those who will park as far away from the entrance as possible even if the car park is empty, and quite often come back to cars all around when there is still acres of free space - don't mind so much when it's another decent looked after car when it's another careful person with the same mindset, but when it's an old bashed up banger with a barrage of car seats in it gets a tad annoying (I'm sure some people do it vindictively for a laugh).

As a Black Cab driver, I was no doubt thought of as one of Hitler’s right hand men by London’s civilian drivers, and a selfish one at that, but if I was in traffic and someone was waiting to come out from a side street, and the only move that I could make would block him from moving, I’d hang back and wave him out, seemed the only sensible thing to do to me.

People who drive for a living seem to be the best at letting people out and generally being considerate. Don't get me wrong, cab drivers sometimes drive like knobs but its usually to get somewhere faster, its not spiteful or "because why should I let them out".

I'm always torn between thinking people are just complete ***** when they are driving and thinking that they are just paying the sum total of 0 attention to anything that isn't a direct and imminent danger to them.

The Audi and BMW jokes are getting a bit tired now, I've driven loads of cars and I drive them all the same way I do however notice that attitudes to your car seem to make others on the road drive differently towards you, for instance "I'm not letting him out because he is in a BMW" "Oh my 1.1 Corsa can surely out drag him"
In all honesty Vauxhall drivers are the worst on the road now, possibly because there are more of them, generally if I have some little chav behind me trying to push me up the road he has the Griffin badge.

Mostly just jealous people driving crap cars that say it.

A large proportion of people on the road drive like idiots especially since many of them probably didn't drive more than 1k miles last year, the car they're in is largely irrelevant... But if its got a private hire plate on it then they're definitely the worst.

ignorance or arrogance - I always try to assume/hope it's ignorance but it's probably not half the time and doesn't make it any better anyway :p

this just came up on my recommended today...

depends. Generally shopping spaces I will let them know if I'm going to be a couple of mins or I'm not actually moving.

However, I remember sitting in a hospital car park crying because I'd been told my wife was on her way there IF they could stabilise her, there was no spaces and a lovely old woman came over, knocked on the window and gave me her spot and ticket.

that was 3 years ago and I still remember her numberplate just in case I ever see her to say thank

One driving question though, if someone lets you into slow-moving traffic, do you then feel like you should or shouldn't let others in in front of you further down? I always don't purely because I feel a little guilty for slowing the person behind that just let me in :D

I mean, I would love a nice BMW or Audi but most people say it because its true. Whenever there is a chance to be a massive ***** on the roads I like to see what cars are being driven by the people who take advantage. Its massively people in "premium" cars like Mercedes, BMW and Audis. I think people usually miss Mercedes off the **** list because for every Merc being driven by a **** there are 3 being driven by someone going at 45 in a 70.

You don't have to take my word for it. Statistically speaking, BMW, Audi and Merc drivers are the worst on the road.

As usual though, people seem to be unable to reconcile the idea that they drive one of the above cars and drive safely while a higher than average proportion of their fellow owners don't.

All this makes me wish I could drive. I'd go hog parking spaces all day and ignore people waiting to see if I'm leaving, kind of like the Simpsons clip of Moe.

Would actually be my 'you need to get outside more' thing.

But me driving would be worse than drink driving and I already gave up my driving rights for a free bus pass.

It makes sense though, while obviously not everyone driving a bmw/audi is going to be an arrogant ****, due to the way they are marketed, they are going to appeal more to a certain demographic, in the same way as any other car (e.g. A jazz or micra is more likely to be driven by an older person, a golf gti with blacked out windows by a boy racer/drug dealer etc). Yes, sweeping generalisations which are more likely to be wrong than right, but there are still disproportionately more of that demographic driving that car than could be attributed purely to random chance

What statistics? I assume you can back that up with accident data?

For want of a better source the sun has an article on it. Vauxhalls seem bad.

Also this quote is amusing given how statistically they are so bad... according to you.

The safest car manufacturer on UK roads were Audis, with just under 200 accidents per 10,000 models.

Nissans (202), BMW (224), Volkswagen (251) and Mercedes-Benz (259) were all in the top-five safest cars.

I deliberately take ages in such situations.

Whilst I would take the time I need to take if I was genuinely engaged in something before driving off, I wouldn't deliberately hold the other person up out of spite. In fact, if I had time left on my ticket then I'd have no issue giving it to the incoming driver, not something I do every day but I've did it a few times in the past.

I don't know why some people have to see politeness and being kind to others as some sort of inherent weakness. Like the drivers who see you indicating right to move into the lane and decide they absolutely have to close the gap to prevent you being in front of them, even though you already are in front of them in a different lane.

People commenting on audi I dictators need to come to Italy.

I swear to god the only people who use them are the old ones who forgot to turn them off 15 junctions ago

The issue is more to do with the level of entitlement the people waiting for the parking space have. If the space isn't empty yet, they should drive on to maybe give the next people a chance instead.

Imo you should only stop and park when you actually find an empty space and not before.

I think level of entitlement is a bit strong. It's not unreasonable to think that someone opening their car door might be about to vacate the parking space. If the other driver has been hunting for a space for a period of time then it's probably more likely to be a sense of relief; why drive on and let the car behind you take the space literally 10 seconds later?

It's obviously not written in stone how we should proceed, but I do think these situations can reveal certain aspects of character.

I see your Sun and raise you MEN.

Your article lists "most involved in accidents" this lists "most likely to be convicted of motoring offences and more likely to make 'at fault' claims". Just because you were involved in an accident doesn't mean you are at fault or the cause.

There is a reason people joke about how bad Audi and BMW drivers are and its not just because they are "well jealous of your sick ride". That being said, a sense of entitlement does make it easier to drive like a massive ***** without feeling like one.

Just drove behind some Vauxhall with its wing mirrors folded in for miles, I wonder if they even noticed. At least they will have felt bad about the awful driving as they probably didn’t have a sense of entitlement.
