People who go and sit in their car to eat their luncheon at work

I do this, when i started i sat in my car the first few days, then i was approached by a lady supervisor.

She said " why do you sit in your car and not come in the canteen"......my reply was simply " i like to go outside and have a smoke and chill out", she didn't like it one bit and i became a bit of an outcast.

I've been there 10 years and probably been in the canteen 4 times.

But as someone stated in this thread, your seen as anti social....as i am lol.

I just dont go to work to socialise, im there to work, get paid and go home.

I do this to get away from my desk and to have some peace and quite.

I'm on the phone all day long with people coming up to me asking questions so sometimes the only way to get away from it all is to go outside and sit in the car or if it's summer I go for a walk.

Woek kitchen is not very big and not many seats so I save time and go outside, use the canteen for hot or cold drinks and that's it. Nice to get out rather than stuck indoors all day and get some fresh air.

I haven't read all the ten pages but that's my two cent on the matter

yes we do this where i work now but you need to make the right choice who you park next to ,some have their engines running for air con and fume their neighbour ,others insist on talking on speaker no matter how private the call is ,some blast out their fantastic music thats crap to anyone whos conquered puberty ,im going to park on my own next week people are just irritating in general i think

I do it at work now, but as I get in at 3.30am I get the best spot in the corner away from everyone else. :p

I used to go sit in my car when I used to work in an office during lunch time, not to eat lunch but to play on my PS Vita.:p

I'd eat my lunch at my desk at the same time as I was working, so I had extra time for gaming at lunch. Now I eat my lunch in a van as I don't work in an office anymore thank god!;)

Funny I see this thread again.

I've moved to eating in the canteen (warmed up meal, no service in there currently) as there is now hardly anyone in there and it's a much nicer (quieter) environment where I can relax and eat alone without chit-chat ruining MY time.

People that think this is weird are probably the types that have to eat with others and moan/bitch/whine about work and make the environment totally uninviting for people that actually want a break.

To gain some peace and quiet, on your own, with no interruptions, or banal chit-chat.

I'm fortunate in that there is a locker room that I have access to and very few people use it. I get to sit quietly, with my own thoughts, browse phone, have a nap. It's a stress reliever and is often the only way I can get through the day without killing someone. I walk to work and therefore can't sit in a car.

I've tried sitting at my desk, but even with my lunch spread across my desk and a mouth full of food people expect you to answer phones, respond to emails and people constantly come over and give you/talk about work. The canteen is busy, with uncomfortable chairs and I think many people expect you to converse and sometimes you just don't want to.

This is an interesting topic. I’m not a big social person but we have a small group at work as we’ve all been there so long and relatively senior, we leave rank at the door every Friday and all go have a fry up and shoot the breeze. It’s good. All other days it varies, some of us will go get take away and bring it back, sometimes we won’t go anywhere and I’ll sit at my desk and have a sandwich.

I work in central London usually, but if I had a job where I drive, I would 100% go sit in the car just to demonstrate to others that I’m taking a break.

Ive tried going into the server room on occasion but it’s too damn cold!

I used to (before working at home in loockdown) sit at my desk and eat lunch , but occasionally would go sit in the car to listen to a podcast or watch some youtube. It sometimes was nice to get away from the desk because as other people have said you feel obliged to answer calls, emails etc. And if you are browsing the web you feel like you are diong something wrong.

I quite often go and sit in the nearby park to eat my lunch at work whilst everyone else stays in the office. Good to have a break and change in environment, and then a walk afterwards.

Sitting in my car I wouldn't do though - as I hate eating in my car anyway.

Funny enough those that are on longer shifts and hence longer breaks at work are doing it more often due to the current situation - for the rest of us though we are generally on more compressed shifts to reduce how long we are in the building and/or numbers that are in at the same time to make distancing easier and hence have shorter or no breaks instead - so not really worth leaving the building.

I do this on occasions. Just because sometimes I don't feel in the mood for small talk with colleagues. I'd rather just have half hour of peace to myself.
