Photoshop and Creative Suite to be permanently subscription based

greedy buggers ,I hope no one pays out for this ,then maybe adobe will back down .
or hopefully a viable alternative will be produced

But how will we pirate it now?! ;):p

In all seriousness though, it does seem like a greedy move and I can see a bit of backlash by customers

Adobe can in all honestly kiss my hairy rear.

This is a ridiculous show of greed on their part and I hope it fails on every level.

I'm running LR4 and PS CS5. I get irritating camera-raw messages when I edit in PS from LR due to CS5 not supporting the latest camera-raw version.

I reckon I will upgrade to CS6 and stick. LR4 and CS6 do everything I need.

I reckon there is a fair chance lots of people will do the same and *then* Adobe will do the u-turn after getting a whole load of cash from all the people doing the same as me - maybe that is the plan ?

I'm on LR4 and CS6 although I could probably get away with Elements as I'm in LR 80-90% of the time.

Based on Adobe's new model I'll be sticking where I am until the software no longer supports what I want to do and thankfully that shouldn't be for a few years.

One thing for sure is that if Adobe maintain this route of subscription based greed, they won't be getting another penny of my cash and judging by some of the responses from the wider photographer scene, a lot them feel the same as me.

I've got LR4 and CS6, master collection, and bought them as student editions at the beginning of the academic year.

Some of the new features that they're advertising are pretty cool, which is annoying (shake reduction would be particularly useful).

I'm in a bit of a confused state at the moment. On the one hand, I don't particularly want to purchase it due to the cost. On the other, I could probably get a student subscription now before my student card runs out (31/5/2013) for a year of student pricing, plus the new features look quite impressive.

Ultimately, though, down the line at some point, they're going to release a feature that people want, and they'll have to make the switch to subscription. The real question is how long will you hold out.

I'm running LR4 and Elements 10 but I'm an amatuer and this setup is more than ample for me. There are some nice features with LR5 and its been confirmed that a standalone version of this will be available so I'd be likely to upgrade this as 98% of my workflow is in Lightroom. Ive yet to come across the need for anything more out of this setup but I suppose you work to what tools yo've got.

The only features I use PS for are the panoramic and the better cloning tools. Colour adjustments and standard process I find LR much more user friendly.

Will hold off subscribing to PS, until the copy I have can't do what I need.

ive only changed in past 6 months from cs3 to cs5 and lr4, they do me fine !! think i can hold out for a while longer

Yes, and based on this (http://mashable.com/2013/05/06/adobe-ceo-interview-creative-cloud/) it actually seems like both of these will still be box based.

I agree with you here. Especially given that LR5 will be a boxed version, and they plan on keeping LR that way, I feel I'll probably stay with LR, and then maybe get the PS subscription depending on how tempting the camera shake reduction is. I'm sure there will probably be a trial version to try out the feature. Ultimately the rest of the apps, I'm still happy with what I have in CS6, considering how sparsely I use them.

Been using PS since something like version 5 and InDesign back when it was called PageMaker.

I think I'll stay with CS6 (bought back when I was a Student), as my usage rate + non-income generating use of the software means it is not worth it at all for me anymore.

Lightroom I use regularly so I upgrade that, but PS and ID? Not worth it.

for you guys on LR4, bear in mind LR5 is now in beta and should be released June/July time.

The beta is available for download and for the last 4/5 of my "shoots" (complete home amateur here) I didn't have to dip out of LR once.

I'm certainly looking to buy it when it's out but concerned about what pricing model it will be. If Adobe has any sense they should definetly make this stand alone at a competitive price given there are other packages out there nibbling at their toes in this space.

I've been using Creative Cloud for a while (nearing the end of my sub actually), I think it's worth it if you regularly use at least three programs (in my case LR, PS, AI and ID), the online storage is useful, you get new features much earlier (for example I was running HiDPI versions of PS and AI on mr rMBP about a month before everyone eles) and there are lots of online tutorials on the Creative Cloud site from places like Lynda and Kelby - you get those before subscribers to those sites get them too. It's also cross platform so I can have an install on my Mac and an install on my PC at home, which is unlike the bought CS versions. My only major gripe is the payment system - I changed my payment method a few months ago, it still won't draw funds automatically. Additionally you have to be online around the time they charge you for the next month so that the software can confirm you've paid. I'm not always online so that's a bit of an issue for me, I'd much rather pay for a year (or more) sub in one go.

unbelievable. i know photographers who really need to use photoshop. if the prices are higher obviously they will suffer. hopefully people can still use older versions.

I'm going to put my head out here.

Although the subscription model is contravesial I'm not 100% sure all the comotion this is generating is valid. There are cases where poeple will be affected for sure but Photoshop is probably one of the most pirated pieces of software ever. Adobe is not a charity and are entitled to be paid for their products.

If you are a professional making a profit from your work, $600 a year doesn't sound that steep to me. Most of us here probably pay that much for a Sky subscription.

Nobody pays for it anyway, which is why they have gone down this route. I have never met anyone who has a legit copy of CS outside of a work environment.

What they should actually be doing is following the path MS went down with Windows 7 and then 8 and clean up with home users. £60-80 for a home version and they could clean up.

I bet the LR figures are much better now they have dropped the price to a more realistic level. I have both 3 and 4 legit once the prices became more realistic for a home use piece of software.
