Pic: Your desk...RIGHT NOW

2m x 720mm x 40mm solid oak top from ebay. I'm actually going to be extending it to the wall at some point with another 1.5m length as I want to get a decent 27" monitor as this TV is a bit big lol. Then have the monitor at the side of the TV. Although saying that now i'm used to the tv is has been great playing Fallout 4 on it.

A bit big for me mind! I like giving my speakers room to breathe so they've got to sit on dedicated stands at either ends of my desk - limits how big it can be. 1.6m I'd say is max before toe in becomes insane from where I'm sitting.

Having the speakers against the wall like that would kill me :p

I would be interested in a smaller version of that same worktop if it exists on ebay?

You can get 1.5m x 620mm worktops I believe, plus there are companies online that will cut it to whatever size you want and even oil it for you for a premium.

Its just a cheap hifi I have had for years. I was looking at getting some Monitor Audio Bronze 2 and an amp and having them on the desk. I don't actually use those speakers while at the desk, I have a sofa behind the desk where I watch films and listen to music, so they are angled toward that position. But I think you're right they are too close to the wall.

Haha, just found a pic I posted earlier in the thread of my desk, quite a change lol. i try to keep it tidy now.

Just moved into my very own place and got my PC up and running, looks fairly tidy on top but my god.. the amount of cables by my feet under desk is very annoying.... I thought buying a 2 meter long desk would give me ample room but still find it a royal pain in the butt at times.

Like the pictures, where did you get them?

That's true, just wondering if I could find something for a decent price on ebay, no idea how much your desk cost. - the IKEA ones + legs are extremely cheap and damn good quality if you buy the worktop and legs separate.

Also, if you're getting the Bronze 2s - don't put them on the desk. Speakers of course are meant to be isolated as much as possible, the desk will just mess up the sound and especially muddy the lower ends.

That being said, you got a desk too long to put stands on either end of it - bit of a pickle that as you'll definitely lose fidelity, even if you stick the speakers on foam isolation as nothing beats a good pair of stands.

The whole setup is a bit of a compromise as I'm mixing my TV and PC together. To be fair I doubt I would notice much difference and looking through this thread it looks like a lot have their speakers on the desk. I tend to listen to music through my headphones most of the time anyway. I'll look into the isolator mats as they might help and seem to be quite cheap from Thomann.

Not many people put too much thought into speaker placement tbh. I doubt many of them even have their speaker tweeter at ear level, as they're supposed to be! (Tilted isolation foam slightly helps with this)

If you think about it, the low end frequencies can travel through walls like they're nothing - a desk or some foam on top is going to do nothing to those. The foam works on the highs to mids, but nothing for the low end. It's better than nothing, however.

Edit: Went looking for it, the best proper setup of a desk speaker I've seen on here is from mrk, this is how you do it properly with the limited space:

They are closer to the wall than my current ones. I guess with the port being on the front helps? How are those stands any different to just standing the speakers directly on the desk as they look to be fixed to the desk? I'll look into some stands like that, but i imagine they wont be cheap..

They're not fixed to the desk. Those are proper speaker stands that go to the floor. And yes, the port being on the front is an absolute must for speakers that go near a wall, they've much more forgiving at being closer to a wall as a result. Although, with stands, you can easily keep the speakers about 30cm from the wall without it looking naff. Also, they're not that close to the wall at all, mrk is just horrible at perspective. ( :D ) I reckon his are a good 10-15cm from the wall, maybe more depending on how close his desk is to the wall.

The pair he got are Pixel T80s, very cheap and sturdy stands for the price! Use them myself. About £60. 80cm is about the tallest you'll get for a stand and it should be ear level when you're sitting unless you're a giant.

Looks like an ikea kitchen worktop and the cabinets they offer. It's quite common in this thread I've noticed. In fact, I'm planning to do it myself next month :D. It's a nice setup. Hopefully when I move into my new place there's room for the 246cm length variant.

EDIT: updated picture...

Desk is 1510mm x 650mm and 730 High, comes with pull out extending table which I will not be using but I am using the panels for it for a floor surface for my case as PSU is on bottom and needs venting

EDIT: may need to move monitor to left, however this will put me closer to 32" TV which is why I haven't moved it already, may need to rethink size of TV (I need new one anyway is this ones 'on its way out')
