[PIC_THREAD] People, Portraits, Street

I've contemplated it, but that sounds an awful lot like hard work :P I'll do it before I put it into the series but I'm too busy at the moment to do it.

Work have asked for some new headshots of the staff, had 5 mins the other day to take a couple of one staff member, wondering whether to keep it nice and simple or go another way.

Unless you work at a hairdressers or something related to the beauty industry I would keep it simple.
Portrait looks well lit, not sure about the colour of the background, I would go for more of a generic grey tbh.

Another headless one while waiting for a train, just a matter of getting as much work done for my school art projects as possible at the moment, which at least gives me a couple of bits that I can post online haha. Really like where this series is going but it's not /quite/ there yet.

Really like this, especially how the figure still has mood/character without a face. As above would be interested in seeing what it looks like with the hand removed.

Unfortunately I only had the walls to use as backgrounds so it was either that colour, vomit green or bright pink...don't ask :p I think i'll be taking my black background in and using that when I do the full shoot.

It's a 1 flash photo bounced from the ceiling.

AHarvey - the simple look always works! Are all your colleagues that attractive? :p

Since we had a new boss yes they are :p I can sit there and point at the ones he'll employee before he even interviews them.

It looks like a shot from graduation photo, minus the hat and gown.

I'm not sure if that's good or bad...what is the purpose of these head shots?

Simple intranet photo. We have several sites over the world, its mainly so that people can identify others when they go to another site so nothing too exotic. Up until now they've either been phone, webcam or one lad with his slr in auto and direct flash, some of the staff weren't happy and asked me to do a couple.

The man running Hotel Kakslauttanen, Finland. by Robbie Khan, on Flickr

A chance portrait, the guy came out of a minibus (driver) so I thought he was just that, asked him for a portrait and he was delighted to oblige. Later that day during the wedding meal we're all sat round and he walks in giving signed gifts to the B&G. I'll be getting this image sent to him for being a top bloke.

I've realised my solo portraiture style has evolved somewhat over the last 12 months and also stopped using artificial light for the vast majority of headshots. I've been selective in who I take portraits of more and more. Whether this is good or not though is too early to tell.

mrk, how did the camera perform in -20?

How many shots did the battery last in those temps?

Camera performed as if it was in +20 temps. Sure it got so cold I could feel the cold through my gloves holding it but neither camera or 17-40 with filter had any problems at all. I took some long exposures at ISO4000 and I think those temps actually helped keep noise to a minimum - As you'd expect :p During the daytime I was using the Sigma 35mm and that was also fine.

I didn't let the battery run dry but down to about 16%, it had taken about 600 shots by that level whereas normally I can get double that. I was recording videos as well although nothing long, just few minute bursts etc.

Ta, I did think he looked a bit like a serial killer. Took a bit to get the 5D2 to focus in these conditions, glad it locked on just in time :)

Do you print your images?

Just curious because you clip your blacks short even more than I do, and I've always found while clipped blacks work really well on the web (to an extent) they've always just looked like a dodgy print when printed in real life. Perhaps because an off-black image on the web is clearly a deliberate choice whereas in print it just looks a bit flat?

One of my first taken with my new (to me) 5Dc and Sigma 50mm1.4, was taken indoors with a flash bounced off the ceiling, would have prefered the eyes to be a bit more in focus but c'est la vie.

On the bottom right there's a bit of ghosting going on, did you clone something out there? I'd use a soft feather to blend it in using the clone tool set at a low opacity :)
