not sure I'm cut out for gig photography just yet.

It's a massive pain in the hoop at times, but I find it really addictive. That being said I get very bored if it's a small gig as you can only take the same type of photo so many times. I've been asked to cover my mates band again this weekend, oddly not by the band themselves. I think they're starting to cotton on to the fact that they're going to have to pay me soon :D

Retro series - 1 by Robbie Khan, on Flickr

This process is inspiration from works by Vivian Maier who was able to capture her subject's souls in her portraits. This is my own take on her vision with my own love for the 70s film/slide colour look.

I'll be adding this process to my catalogue :)

Aint nothin but the blues by Niall Allen, on Flickr

I went to Chester this morning, planning on going up the river bank on low tide for the moored boats. Got there and realised that in my rush I'd left the 70-200 at home. That was a cracking start. Anyway, as I sat there sulking at 10am, staring at the hot dog vendor, lusting after his hot dogs with chilli sauce, these lads turned up (I think they were called intercity blues band) and started busking. The chap above was one of the interesting people around.

This lovely lady was another fan who chipped in their pot. I didn't realise until I processed the photo that her boyfriend was glaring at me from behind her :D

This was the band. It's deliberately taken at an angle due to him leaning, which I liked initially, but now the 'straight freak' in me is starting to hate it!

After a few weeks debating between Yongnuo YN-568 and Nikon SB700, i went and bought SB700. I'm glad i did as it's a really good flash and came with lots of accessories and also sync perfectly with my camera i-TTL.

Was going to order Yongnuo RF-603 at the same time but i heard that's manual only so going to order Yongnuo YN-622N for TTL next month as i prefer using off camera flash without my pop up flash.

Here are a few pictures i took and sure no match with most of people in here :D

No 1 and 2 taken with 50mm F1.8G and no 3 with kit lens 18-105mm and all with SB700 bounce to ceiling also with pull out white card for catch light on the eyes.

Thanks

Manual is a good way to learn flash usage in many circumstances. Usually it's useful to use as an aid to give a bit of a kicker to subjects, a small amount of fill flash :)

But no flash = best flash where possible :D

...this eccentric American guy approaches us and offers a flyer to a club close by where a music gig is going on. He sees our cameras and says no camera allowed in there because it's "secret" - A secret club where public flyers are being handed out? Hmm

He starts talking some more and all of a sudden pulls out a Bible and begins reciting lines with a bit of mixup with lyrics from Big Daddy Cane and Raekwon/other hip hop artists....

I said "I'll take a flyer if I can take your picture", he was more than happy to oblige

He must have carried on talking for around 5 minutes while I snapped away, low light and only having the wide angle meant high ISO and slow shutter to make do but this shot came out well, you can see the bible and flyer he was speaking of.
