Sorry to hijack, but on the topic of butterflies, I am heading to a popular butterfly meadow in Winchester on Wednesday. I have a D610, and have a choice of Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5 AF-P VR, or old Nikkor 50mm f/1.8d prime, with Kenko N-AF Uniplus Tube 25mm extension tube.

I've never shot butterflies before. Which lens to you think is best suited for it - the telephoto, or prime (with extention tube?)?

Sorry! Just seen this but of course you must have already been to the butterfly meadow. I wouldn't have been able to answer though, I'm just a few weeks old noob at photography at the moment:p
But anyway, I used my Tamron 70-300mm telephoto lens@300mm and @f5.6.

There we go, using the telephoto...

On reflection, I am quite happy with them for a first attempt and not knowing what to expect of the place. I went with a friend on the walk, but if I was alone, I would have been more patient and taken more time. I also think going earlier than noon would have given better results. Lens was fine, but I see why a macro, fixed length (around the 200-300mm) lens would be best for sharpness and quality.
