Picky eaters

I thought I was picky until I seen some posts here!

I fear restaurants because I never know what i'm going to order or if i'm going to like what is made but there's usually something that i'll go for on every menu. My brothers girlfriend on the other hand only appears to eat chicken and chips which I find very disturbing.

Hi all, i went to a restaraunt(well, too good to be pub grub, not flashy enough to be restaraunt) the other night with work, and we were all handed the menus.
I was chatting with the bloke next to me about what i was going to choose (there was quite a good varity, English, Spanish, Italian etc). Anyway once i'd finished blabbing, i asked him what he ws choosing, and he stated he didnt like ANY of the meals on the menu. "I won't eat that forign muck, plain English is all i eat."
I was quite surprised, but i pointed out several traditional english dishes..
Sausage and Mash - "Don't like sausage with herbs in, or the onion in the gravy"
Beef and veg (roast dinner basically) "Don't like veg or fruit"
Fish and chips - "don't like Haddock, only like Cod."

Anyway this went on for a few more meals, and in the end he chose something off the childrens menu, Beans on Toast.

Now i guess i'm lucky, as theres isn't really many foods i don't actually like, but a part of me wonders on what exactly he's been living off for 30 odd years!I don't know why, but i also found it slightly annoying, don't know why though.
Does anyone else know anybody like this?
Rant over.
Jeez, im not even that bad.

Great to see so many replies.

I've got to admit, Seafood is one of my favourite foods, beautiful. Theres so many different meals and flavours out there.

When i was with my G/F of 3 years i felt very lucky, as she'd eat anything or try new dishes. I have to admit that trying new food is an interest of mine! :D

I'm picky with my veg but I will eat most things that arn't mushrooms and sprouts... also can't stand the majority of chinese food that I have tried and I absolutly can't STAND onion gravy.

I genuinely pity fussy eaters. I couldn't imagine missing out an all of the incredible tastes and textures that the world has to offer. Sure, there are things that I don't like, but at least I can honestly say that I've never turned something away without trying it.

Saying that though, I also pity people who don't appreciate good wine, whiskey, music or literature. One might say that I'm a bit of a snob. ;)

Things I can't abide by are undercooked chips/potatoes and really cheap ham and other cheap reconstituted meats.

I'm with you on the cheap ham. Put it in between two bits of cheap white bread and it makes a horrible sandwich scoring at least 6 or 7 on the barf-o-meter.

Girl at work is a vege, not a normal kind of veggie, she is the annoying kind... she doesn't eat ANYTHING! Which makes going out on client lunches a bit embarassing :/

She won't eat anything off the vege menu.. it is hard work.

Actually i just remembered something else that gets my stomach churning.

Spam

I mean who ever created this foul tasting product needs a slap. It isnt even food.

Oooo also Pork Pies, used to LOVE them as a kid, honest to god need to be sick even if i see one now. Just from knowing what it really is has put me off. But anywya i wouldnt class that as food either.

To the people out there who dont eat fruit, i mean wtf!? - Every night i eat chopped mango, apples, kiwi, grape in a bowl with some natural yogurt. Lovely

Everyone is missing out tbh :E

Hehe, was wondering what the words were for those types :D
Well it's true, these people are denying to eat another food because its form another culture or whatever regardless of whather the food is good or not.
It's like saying a doctor is bad because he's black.
Its one of the things which actually is racism.

Anyway I love spam fritters man, they're tasty, stick them with a bit of ketchup, loverly, can't see how you wouldn't like them.

Same, well I've had veg once or twice but I've never ate fruit in my life.

No fruit ever?

You dislike all fruit?!

my girlfriend used to be a really fussy eater but I have basically forced her to eat things she says she "hates" but really she either (a) has never tried said food or (b) only tried it about 15 years ago as a kid and not since...

So the list of what she hated before me:

Spag Bol
Steak Pie
not keen on ham
Curry
Jam
etc.. quite more things i can't remember

She now LOVES all the above foods! I remember the day I made her eat some of my jam on toast and as she just looked up with a little smirk as if to say "omg this is sooo annoying, he was right, this is YUMMY!"

ownd!

I went to Vegas last Jan with 6 of my best mates for two weeks. Everynight we'd go to a different restaraunt for an evening meal. Everynight i'd try something completely different, most of my mates had Steak and Chips, EVERY NIGHT.
Seriously, i do love a good Steak and Chips, but not night after night. Traveling all that way and just eating that every night, it's just criminal!

I don't eat fruit. I've tried various forms of it but each time it was a completely unsatisfactory experience. I'm convinced that humans are not supposed to eat that stuff, the taste is fine but the textures involved make me retch.

You don't half like getting wound up about things that don't affect you :/

It's a skill :D

Mushrooms seem to crop up a lot when people talk about food they dont like. I was watching some cookery show and they were putting mushrooms in a dish. The chef guy was talking about that with generic mushrooms most people make the mistake of washing them. When they do that and then cook them; that's what makes them so 'slimy'. Because they soak up all the water. You should either cook them unwashed, or peel them. I've never tried it as i quite like the texture and peeling mushrooms takes too much time :p

Maybe people saying mushrooms are 'slimy' should try that? Or just dont over-cook them. :)
