piledriver - Official AMD FX4300,FX6300 and FX8350 review thread

Anyone wanting a balls out overclock is probably better off waiting for 8350, I suspect 8320 are binned as such because they can't run at 8350 speeds whilst remaining inside the 125W envelope.

That might also be why they are stuggling with 8350 stock.

I am just waiting for an email to collect my 8350 from the store. I understand that OCUK are sending out preorders today but next day delivery meant Saturday and I am not at work to receive a delivery.

I am also considering a Phanteks to replace my TRUE 120mm cooler, any thoughts on this. Do not want to put under H20 at the moment

Project 'Silentpiler' is imminent, I would be happy with a 24/7 overclock at 4.6GHz at a lowish vcore, but will obviously try for the highest OC to determine available headroom.

Aargh, still waiting for the motherboard! My OcUk goodies came today though, that Silver Arrow cooler gave me a bit of momentary panic on whether it'd fit my Shinobi. I think it will but can't be certain until the board arrives.

Are the other chips for pre-order in now? I'm waiting for a 6300 :-)

Watercooling still seems to make zero difference on AMD I'm reaching 60C @4.6ghz 1.42V under Prime (8320), that's laughable really. I'm beginning to think this whole 62C thing is a phantom sensor AMD put there so that people are more cautious when overclocking.

How the hell can you get nearly the same temp between a heatsink and high end water? Intel's rightly see about a 20-30C difference.

Have you tried the same chip on air then?

I bought a DH-14 to go with it but it was reaching 55C at only 4.2ghz with the case sides off, I thought it was pointless trying to push on air so moved it into my WC case (EK Supremacy, 360mm rad).

If the CPU TEMP sensor is a realistic reading and 62C is the limit then these chips are a hell of a lot harder to keep cool than a 3930K @4.6ghz which is about twice as fast overall.

I'm up to 61C now, the individual cores are showing 44C which sounds a lot more realistic but their idle temp is about 13C... AMD temperature readings are still a mess really.

One of the cores failed Prime95 @4.6ghz 1.42V and there is literally no CPU TEMP headroom to increase the volts. hmmm. How are people running 1.5 volts and keeping the CPU TEMP below 62C? it's impossible.

Going to be abit of topic so sorry to some people.

I would ignore that 62c limit because i have hit around 74c (3.6 with 1.45v) on air before without knowing about that limit before and it didn't worry me at all, i have moved to an Antec Kúhler H2O 620 and dropped the speed back to stock (3.2 with 1.2v) because i don't really game that much but when i do some gaming the games don't really need that much power to get good fps.

There seems to be a warehouse booking in issue that is holding up the CPU's other than the 8320. So it will not be this weekend, early next week I am reliably informed.

Yes you are correct

On AIR it is going to be a lot over 62C
Especially running small fft's.
Basically you have to decide for yourself what the limit is.

Of course unless you run P95 24/7 you won't normally see such high temps.

4.6Ghz on Air is not bad, but 62c is not the limit, i know someone with an FX-8150 who has it purely for number-crunching, overclocked to 5Ghz on watter and runs it for 3 days at a time at 70c, its never done it any harm and its stable.

Also P-95 is the most extreme your CPU will ever run, it will never run like that during normal use.
