"Pillars of Eternity: RPG funded by Kickstarter"

Just got this game installed :)

Went for Cipher as first character after reading up as it seems a bit different / interesting.

Are there any good guides / tips for newbies? ( maybe put links in first post  )

Hoping this is as fun as the original NWN

I just read something about a transvestite having a joke about a man who met a transvestite, removed from the game.

At first I was all like 'grrr', then I saw a picture of said transvestite who complained and I was all like 'hahaha'

Sheesh, my mood swings...

Playing the game as a straight jackass... killed my entire party right from the get go and going to try and solo this lol. Pretty insane :D

Just completed it. Very disappointing ending, and in truth disappointing story overall.

I didn't know if was going to end.... I still had over 10 side quests and more tasks to complete.

Damn, love this game as im a big fan of baldurs gate 2, but its killing me early on, I am getting killed way to easy and quite often on normal mode, aloth and edur have joined me

I thought I'd try a few classes and have now tried Cipher, Wizard and Druid

Think I like Druid best so far but only really because I like AoE and having to position/pause etc is fun :)

One thing I don't like so far is some of the dialogue / story as it seems to be written by someone who's , key is broken or there is a bet on to see who can fit in the most and's into a sentence :(

I enjoyed the Ranger class as it is was quite fun to send my wolf out to engage the enemies whilst I picked them off from afar. Also, stealth is excellent so I will probably always play some kind of sneaky character.

There are so many really great improvements over older IE games in this. off the top of my head:

Endurance/health
Stealth
Per-encounter spells and abilities
No class restrictions on weapons and armour(Finally!)
Engagement is brilliant, and makes mele classes really much more useful.
Grimoires.
All classes feel unique and viable

Unfortunately, in terms of the story and reactivity, the game is a bit of a let down. I hope the expansions will improve on this....You get very little reaction from any NPC for your actions. It could also do with more NPCs, as the world feels dead.

Apparently I was reading there will be a large expansion for this, which will be split in to two parts, one being released fairly soon, and it will features a new hub.

While the mechanics of the game are generally pretty sound, I'd agree about the story and dialogue. It often feels juvenile at times, taking itself way too seriously. Damn, people, it has magic and zappy spells. It's as po-faced as a dodgy black metal album.

Furthermomre, the story itself is... dull. The characters are forgettable and, as you can simply create your own non-gimped versons via the taverns, they become redundant pretty quickly. The priest guy is kinda fun and the sharp toothed one is a laugh but the rest are a bit poo.

However, I am sure some decent stuff can come of it.

I thought the dialogue was good, obviously the story has a serious tone to it but some of the stuff that your companions come out with made me laugh at times, especially the druid.

The last boss took me 3 hours to kill using companions, had the priest, cipher, druid, the warrior, hunter and my main guy was a fighter.. literally scraped by though, only my cipher was alive at the end ;)

I got lucky on the last boss on my second attempt I think. I was a ranger, and with the right mix of abilities with my Wolf I could do silly damage and took out Thaos and a guardian in one shot when the other guardian was still alive.

What I thought of the game- (doesn't spoil anything, it is just a long post!)

Pillars of Eternity

A really, really good Isometric RPG from Obsidian that was kickstarted and released a few weeks ago.

Positives

  • Really, really nice artwork and style to the game. The backgrounds are all nice-looking and it just looks lovely overall.
  • The game mechanics all work really well imo, and are a massive improvement over the old IE games. Stealth in particular is done really well imo. Some of the new combat stuff is really good as well. Engagement is a really good addition which adds a new tactical depth to mele characters, and Endurance/health is really well handled as well and a welcome addition. I like the armour system and the way it handles recovery as well. It works really well.
  • The combat gets some getting used to, but once you do it is really good. Some really fun fights that require tactics to get right. Getting the right team together for each fight is fun and it can be very challenging at times too. Per-encounter abilities are a welcome addition too.
  • The UI and general menus are vastly improved and really intuitive.
  • The stats and classes are handled really well. The Character creation is excellent with plenty of options that allow you to create distinct characters with interesting skills and back stories.
  • Voice acting and writing is very good, especially on companions. The world is interesting too.
  • The first big city is fun to explore, with plenty to do.
  • There is a mega-dungeon called the Endless Paths of Od Nua which is epic!
  • Stealth is pretty much as good as you can get in an isometric RPG, and soloing some parts is great fun due to this!
  • All classes feel different and are viable and have their own distinctive abilities, uses and traits.
  • Role-playing is generally very good, as you would expect from Obsidian, who do it better than anyone else.
  • Lots of quests with interesting paths and outcomes. Each companion has their own unique quest and story which are all good. You never feel like you have made the wrong decisions and you can pretty much choose whatever you want to do in most quests, which is a breath of fresh air nowadays!
  • They do these little interactive storyboard sequences which work really well and are very well done. Loved them!
  • Good variety of weapons that all feel good and viable, and it works well in tandem with the combat stats with the different type of damages....However, see negatives

Negatives

  • The story was a bit anti-climactic and ended too abruptly.
  • Could have done with another big city as the 2nd one you get to, I found a let down. There will apparently be an expansion with another big hub though.
  • Could have done with some more dungeons.
  • Also, whilst there are factions in the game that you can get a reputations with, it feels a bit hollow as they never really come to anything. The game could have done with proper faction quests like the ES games tbh.
  • There is a disappointing lack of reactivity to your choices throughout the game. Shame for an obsidian game!
  • The stronghold you get is very disappointing and little more than lip-service to backers as it was a stretch goal
  • The world feels a little dead. Needs many more NPCs!
  • Some improvements are needed with the mechanics imo. For example, you should be able to go in to individual stealth. Atm, your whole party starts sneaking as you can't choose it individually. Also, I would like to be able to dismiss party members anywhere. Another one is that you can't use certain items and abilities outside of combat. this was done to make it less tedious pre-buffing before each fight, but all it does is make it so that you have to do that at the start of each fight!
  • Lack of companion AI packages mean you need to micro-manage everything. It works ok, but could be greatly improved with a few options.
  • Personally, I would have liked the option to sheath weapons.
  • Not enough variety in armour imo, and there aren't really enough unique items worth getting imo. Also, enchanting isn't quite as good as it could be either.
  • It is a bit safe. Compare it to Divinity:OS, and you see how that game evolved the genre a bit more.

Overall I loved Pillars. It is the best RPG I have played in years, and I can't see one coming out soon that might conquer it tbh. I tried replaying DA:I after playing this, and I just couldn't play more than 10 minutes tbh! It is a little safe in places and does feel a bit small, but with balancing and expansions coming, it will ony get better! 8.5/10

So I am level 3, got the stronghold and got sent under to some endless paths..found a short cut to a lower level and now found it too high level for me and I can't escape. Re-loading a save isn't an option as it auto saved when I got down here.

Where was the warning telling me that it was going to be like this??? Pretty retarded considering all the quests I got given sent me down here but aren't actually for me to do yet. I get the game is supposed to be challenging and not hand holding, but how could I have known it was a progressive dungeon :(

Anyone know how can I escape without starting whole game again
?

Spoilers tags added in case :)

Keep right. Lure the first set of enemies to you but avoid the traps. They will trigger them. A few more fights and eventually go up the stairs to get out. Use the sneak function and camp in between fights as you will need your spells/buffs

I got killed using that shortcut as well!.. Luckily I got to the main staircase and got back to the top.

The Endless Paths are epic!... Unfortunately I only got to level 9 before the end of the game. And I finished the game with loads left to do as I wasn't expecting it to end!

I am now playing in through again for a second time BTW... I tried replaying Dragon Age Inquisition, but only got half an hour in before I couldn't stand it... And I have played over a hundred hours of it before. It was the total lack of role playing that killed it after experiencing a real RPG in Pillars!

]Do you have Aloth? He has some really good control spells. Also I think you can get a good one from Maerwald's grimoire.

Tbh, I would only do the first 3-4 levels of the Endless Paths before levelling up and coming back with a full party. The later levels are very hard!

Also I've got a really good tip for early game -
you start with the ring Guarms pledge which let's you restore endurance a few times per battle... It is OK, bit you can sell it for over 1500....allowing you to hire a full party of level one adventurers right at the start of the game that you can level up to your liking.

I do and have been using him and my cipher to cc as best i can, then the priesty guy for heals/buffs. I managed to skip to lvl 5 lol and it's proving tough to get out.

2nd group just went down. Hopefully I can make it out, I'm outta camps now too :)

I have the ring but didn't know it could restore endurance, how do i make it do so??

EDIT: damn, there's a group blocking the stairs and I don't have enough to kick their butts :(
