"Pillars of Eternity: RPG funded by Kickstarter"

What I thought of the game- (doesn't spoil anything, it is just a long post!)

Really good assessment, agree with pretty much everything you wrote about the game.

Another minor quibble I have with the game mechanics is the way that Damage reduction works.

As enemies in the game get tougher, the gameplay favors DR ignoring weapons more and more (e.g Stilettos, Estoc, Guns), while seriously hampering the benefits of others. This skews the usefulness of certain weapon types late game.

Love the game though.

This game is so awesome :D

Shame the AI is so damn dumb though, getting stuck at times or forgetting to attack

The Endless Paths are epic!... Unfortunately I only got to level 9 before the end of the game. And I finished the game with loads left to do as I wasn't expecting it to end!

Question regarding The Endless Paths

Are the endless paths the end point of the game?

No. Totally optional, but they have great puzzles and high-end loot. It has its own story that is separate from the main one, but does tie in with the general lore.

And yeah the pathfidning is atrocious, and will hopefully be improved!

Grand, I will continue on then, cheers

I ended up re-rolling after getting stuck. Am now trying a dual wield rogue. My god they can do some damage :) Almost back to the point where I was already.

That is what I'm trying atm! Struggling to keep my main alive when the real fight starts though... It all depends on how much damage my initial sneak attack does. If I can do big damage(I have one-shotted some hard enemies), then the fight can almost be over before it began!

With my rogue I've been soloing quite a bit of it so far, avoiding a fair bit of combat and sneaking through areas.

Don't you worry that you keep skipping fights you will be too weak for the harder battles later on, that cant be skipped?

You don't get xp for combat, only for quests, so leveling is exactly the same(well, you do get some xp for bestiary entries on monsters you kill until you have learned everything, but it isn't that much). You can miss out on loot, but I don't evade every fight, so still get some xp from bestiary entries, and loot from drops. The main fights I am trying to avoid are with human enemies when I am soloing bits, and as I am playing a really sneaky rogue with no morals, avoided ng fights is quite easy through either sneaking or making shady deals;)

Whats this like for someone who never played old school rpgs that this draws influence from?

i tried divinity original sin but couldnt get on with how vague the quests were, the start just over welmed me and i didnt really know what to do. this is probably due to too much hand holding these days, but im up for a challenge! a big souls series fan and god knows how vague they can be

Personally, I think PoE is quite accessible. I don't think you'd find it as vague as Divinity Original Sin. On the other hand it doesn't hand hold as much as some of the modern age RPGs like Dragon Age : Inquisition - for example you won't find quest markers on a compass etc. However, the quest journal is quite descriptive and I've yet to find myself stuck on how to proceed within the game.

Thats a good answer thanks, i love the appeal of a long deep rpg but dont want to find myself head scratching as much as i was in the divinity opening hours. Trying to solve that murder was annoying lol

Have you played other older rpgs like this? Or is this new for you too?

I'm very familiar with this type of RPG, having played Baldur's Gate and all the other Infinity Engine games. Like them this game is lengthy and deep. But it's not an exercise in frustration trying to figure out the story line or quests. Combat can be hard at times particularly if you're not used to this type of game - it's not afraid to let you wander in to areas which you are under-levelled for. Just be sensible, and try and flesh out your party before biting off more than you can chew.

I easily prefer PoE to Divinity Original Sin ( but that's not to say D:OS is a bad game ).

Has anyone got any advice as to which skills I should level up. My main character rogue has been boosting Stealth, but the whole mechanic seems flawed i.e. if one member is spotted we all come out of stealth. I've also been pumping Lore on my Paladin, Wizard and Priest. I'm not sure if I should just concentrate on Athletics as that has a definite impact in combat i.e. with endurance...

this game has some serious difficulty spikes

lvl6 party, I can easily clear out Heritage Hill apart from Leyra. She's just a brickwall. Why have such weak area mobs and then a mini-boss that hard.

Can't really comment as to that, as I didn't fight Leyra, but there is pretty much a tactic for every single event. Maybe they have a different defensive weakness you haven't found out yet?

yeah I've beaten her now playing around with positioning and buffs/debuffs. Just the sudden steps in difficulty are pretty shocking. Same the first time you head in to the lighthouse.
