We have only just moved house to what will likely be our forever home and obviously do not know our neighbours or anyone on our street. Got a letter through the door to say they are organising a street party on Friday.

There is only around 10 houses on our street and I think it will be a nice way to meet people and make friends.

No real care for the Royal family here, but will be a good opportunity to meet our neighbours.

I don't think I know a single person who actually cares about the queen or royal family. An extra day off work on the other hand - I know many people who like the idea of that.
If you don't care about the Royal Family, then go to work? Not like people to take free hand outs at all.

There are also millions who understand and value the monarchy.

You might think we live in a democracy, but actually we don't.

In late March 2011, I was offered a permanent job in the NHS, starting in late April. Bog standard 1-month lead time to sort out references, CRB / DBS checks etc.

2011 was also the year when Easter fell on 24th April, plus there was a royal wedding which made the 29th April as an extra bank holiday. That meant there were bank holidays on:

22nd April (Good Friday)
25th April (Easter Monday)
29th April (royal wedding)
2nd May (May Day)

What start date did my new NHS job give me in the end? The 4th May

Interesting people are saying they don't support the monarchy, some even saying they want to get rid, but they'll take the free holidays.

Bit hypocritical and speaks volumes.
Looking at your posting history it seems you aren't religious. I assume you've never taken Easter or Christmas off then, as that would be a bit hypocritical and speak volumes....

Know this is morbid. Does anyone know if shops etc have to close when its the Queen's funeral? I won't be happy to be forced to work then.

Oooooh, that's a bit creepy.

I'm not overly religious ie i don't attend Church weekly, but married in Church, kids christened and although i don't believe in any spaghetti monster, i do believe that the Bible etc are a good moral compass to follow.

That aside, it is just disheartening to read people disparaging the Queen, but are quite happy to take the extras days off. If you are that against the Monarchy, make a stand, go to work.

Why should i? Ive paid into the system for 20 years. Why should I go to work when im paying for this bank holiday?

I think it might be a bit silly for someone to turn up to an empty office on the basis that they don't believe in the vagina lottery. It's perfectly reasonable to enjoy the day off instead. After all, every tax payer in the land is forced to contributes to these families on benefits .

That's the point. You are getting the holidays and are able to enjoy the extra days off BECAUSE of the Monarchy - the very thing some are hating on.

Oooooh, that's a bit creepy.
I never understand why people say this, you post your thoughts openly on a public forum then say its creepy when people take time to read them.

I think its actually respectful to take a modicum of time to find out who you are conversing with so you dont just make incorrect assumptions.

Well, you have to be a bit selective on which bits ;)

But still as you know, religion is completely unnecessary for morality.

Bit difficult if your work's shut :p But I still dont see how that follows.

For the record I'm self employed, so bank holidays, weekends, Christmas, Easter none of it means anything to me. I work when I want and don't when I want, irrespective of what the calendar says.

My employer doesn't do the bank holidays
You mean the business remains open and shifts have to cover bank holidays? Strange way of phrasing it?
I like the fact we have these events to celebrate. We have some interesting history and a little national pride and celebration brings us more together than it divides us.
Exactly this. I’m not a royalist but you look at countries that either don’t have a monarchy or royal history (like the US), and those that have gotten rid of it. They are all undoubtedly worse for it.

If you want to complain about rich people skimming off everyone else there’s plenty of other targets. Bankers, hedge funders you never hear about, house builders, footballers etc. None of those do anywhere near as much work for this country as the royals do.

I’m in west London and basically every street around here is shutting down and having a party. Looking forward to it.
