Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Make sure you factor in 1 speed session per week (if you're not already doing them) and you'll get to sub-50 in no time :) Speed sessions & hill work are responsible for my improved race pace recently. Hoping for a HM PB next weekend, maybe even sub 1h50. We'll see :)

Some reason my knee cap hurts after running last week... It's like a bruise, but there is no bruise ..

Really annoying, can still run and move about ... just annoying..

Might have to lay off running this week just to see if it goes.

Ok after trying some aweful blister plasters + cushioned dressing pads on top and tearing away a layer of skin on one of my feet today, I think I'm going to attempt saving for some new running shoes :p. In the mean time I'll be trying Scholl blister plasters+ dressing pad on top, they appear to be quite good.

Also might try some inserts as I think my shoes may be slightly too big (any suggestions?)

You need to warm them in your hand first so they adhere a bit better. Don't try and pull them off though or they'll take a lot of skin with them. They need to come off on their own after they've finished the healing process and will eventually fall off in the shower or something :)

Wohoo !! Finally hauled my fat lump of a body and broke a sub 9 min mile. Did my 5k run in 26.50 today down from 27.23. Hope to keep trying and eventually hit 25.00 but I can see that it will be a long way off.

Will also try to do a 10k again and hopefully break the 1hr as Ive only ever done it once before.

I need to step up my mileage (is kilometerage a word?) this weekend.

After a long time out with a knee injury I've done a couple of 5ks as part of my training for the Eton Sprint Triathlon at the end of May. The distance to be covered is 5km so i think that I need to step up to 10km this weekend.

Not worried about the CV given the amount of cycling I do and the fact I'm now the sveltest I've been in a number of year!

Fantastic stuff, nice one Bear :D I'm absolutely sure you can break 1 hr on a 10k.

I smashed my half marathon PB by 8 mins last weekend. This year I will mainly be trying to hunt down a sub-1h45. Amazing really since this time last year I was considerably slower. This was my fastest ever paced race, even including all the shorter races I've done (5 miles etc.). Brill :D

I have a knee niggle at the moment which came on suddenly yest morning, but my physio just thinks it's a tight quad so lots of stretching & massage should see me good for next Sunday. I never dreamed that running 26.2miles could get me this excited. Can't wait!!! :D

Thanks Kate :) That PB is a huge difference so looks like you are doing something right !! I wish I could be as quick but I guess these things take time and edging ever closer to 40 doesnt help either Im sure :D.

Hope your niggle is just a passing thing and good luck on the marathon.

Went out to do 10k this morning, first one in a while and a crucial milestone for me in my training and recovery.

Unfortunately I kept getting joggers bowel and had to stop every km to, erm, clench.

Probably too much information, but I'm just annoyed my running isn't progressing as I want for one reason or another.

Less than a month until the Manchester 10k, and I've been waiting for my annual injury curse to kick in. Last year it was a torn calf, the year before Plantar Fasciitis, and some point it was snapping my foot in half (I dance like a crazy person). This years is a new one for me, Ledderhose disease (Morbus Ledderhose). I've had Dupuytren's contracture (Morbus Dupuytrens) in my hand since '98, so it was always likely at some point. Nodule right in the middle of my arch. It started off as just being tight under my foot, and then progressed to my foot going numb after around 3 miles. This then stopped, but I got a small nodule, which as grown over the last six months, so its now sore all the time.

Anyone got any experience with this at all? I'm really not sure how its going to affect my running longer term.

went for a run today with my friend (first time I've ever ran with someone else :o, far more fun though shame he lives far far away usually), he had a garmin 205 (Dayum they're nice, I want one :o) and apparently we did around 3.6 miles in just under 9 min/miles.

Not a bad pace I thought and I had more in the tank for at least another mile and a half Id say (I normally go further).

Also going to invest in some "1000mile Blister free-guarantee" socks he had which looked quite nice at £8

I find hilly socks to be the bees knees, I buy the Hilly mono-skins. Never got on with the 1000 mile socks.

No experience of it but good luck on getting through that, guess you are getting specialist advice...

No I couldn't get on with 1000 Mile socks either. They gave me blisters and shrunk in the wash. I use More Mile socks. Can't remember the model but they're black and blue. Won't change them now. It took me ages to find socks that i got on with!

Thanks for the effort put into the original post here. Really useful. I've been running for about 2 months and I'm enjoying it. Last year I lost a few stone through dieting mostly and I am much fitter than I've been for a quite a few years but could do with losing another half stone.

I just got fitted for some proper shoes rather than a pair of old nikes i was using. The last run in the nikes left me with crushed toes and blisters on my blisters. the guy in the running shop told me I mildly over-pronate and I ended up with some Saucony hurricanes. Two 10k runs since buying them on Monday and no problems at all.

I'm running about three times a week at the moment and averaging around 10k in about an hour. What would people suggest as reasonable goals from there?

I've always done a lot of board sports, had to stop rugby years ago due to back injury and thought running was dull - I was wrong, I'm getting a real kick out of it.:)
