Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Yep SIS are the cheapest yet most disgusting in taste :)

I tend to use the High 5 range now, the chocolate recovery drink is so nice :) a nice treat at the end of workout.

Yeah High5 are my goto aswell, although i don't mind the SIS Rego recovery drink.

A few guys i run with always talk about Tailwind, but i'm cheap and so just grab stuff when it's on offer which tends to limit you to SIS/High5

I was told by someone who works in sports nutrition that Mountain Fuel are one of the best brands, as they do not use gums and loads of other nasties that are hard to digest or are not easy on the stomach.

I was also given a Maurten pack not long ago to try out. It just tastes of sweet nothing, but it's meant to be very good for endurance athletes.

I quite like the Berry SIS one. Tried the Gu and it wasn't easy if you weren't carrying any other liquid. Lucozade ones made me gag, they were hideous.

Not tried High5 since the massive powder tubs we used back in the early 90s when cycling.

I forget the brand, but the ones they handed out during the Manchester marathon were horrific, i'm not sure how it passed any taste tests. It was like eating pure sugar.

I do sometimes consider experimenting, but i'm still using some SIS ones which have a best before date of Nov 19 so it'll take a while!

Veloforte are really nice, but they are silly expensive.

Will hunt out Mountain fuel thanks :)

Big fan of Veloforte. Usually buy a load when they have a Strava deal or others running.

BUT.....they are IMPOSSIBLE to open!! It's the only bar I have to stop (when riding) to open the bloody thing! As they can be quite sticky, they don't slide out of the packaging very easily, and trying to open them in the first place with cold winter gloves on.......forget it!

im a big fan of GU. Mostly natural ingredients, apart from where it makes sense to have processed, but importantly not usiu natural stuff like honey which is not digestsble. Isotonic, highly digestsble, decent caffeine dose, optimal balance of glucose and fructose (unlike those cheap ones made lf plain sugar). Lots of choices of flavour, snd they all taste pretty good.

i got through about 40 of them in 110hours this September.

like anything sugar based, 1 an hour for 12 hours started to get little much with the other high energy foods (energy bars stuffed with glucose). After 24 hiurs i was stuffing myself with ham and cheese.

Was it a lightning deal, all normal price now

Didn't say it was a Lightning deal, was there for a good day, even eventually decided to get myself a pair.

Only just got the Mizuno trainers but will already have a replacement ready come summer time.

Well you got a great price on them, I would have nabbed a pair for sure if I'd noticed your post sooner.

Can anyone assist me in some beginners trail running shoes? I don't run, but do bike. Mainly MTB during the warmer dryer months and road In the winter. I also play football once a week and coach U8's, so am not unfit, just a bit podgy at the moment. Loads of good trails where I live and going for a quick run during my work from home lunch breaks is appealing to me for its simplicity. Where do I even begin?

Have you a budget?

My go to trail shoes are Saucony Peregrines. They work quite well on roads and light trails as they do in deep mud.

I’d try a running shop and try some on. They should have a variety at a lot of budget levels.

Worth adding that depending on the type of trail, you’d probably be fine in regular road shoes for anything light and more “pathy”.

The trails are nothing too extreme, bit of mud, stones and chalk hills mainly. You have reminded me that I do have some road running shoes from a few years ago they I used for the gym, if I can find them I may as well use them and see how I go. Cheers.

Hi all

I got into running earlier this year when gyms were closed, and I'd like to get back into it.

The blocker for me at the moment is weather - I'd like to learn about what to wear outside.

Would anyone be able to point me towards perhaps a standard winter running setup? I.e. do I need running tights or shorts? Long sleeve shirt? Absolutely clueless :)

i go with longish socks, running tights, long sleeved top, running belt with phone, t-shirt

i mention the belt as it keeps the top from letting the freezing cold air up from the bottom.

if i wear i hat i get too hot, likewise with gloves, i just end up taking them off.

Anything below about 7/8 degrees I'd be wearing long tights, long sleeve shirt, gloves and a buff round the neck if it's very cold. I sometimes wear a t-shirt over the long sleeve.
Anything above that would just be the normal shorts and t-shirt. My hands get very cold so I'd wear gloves sometimes regardless.

Yeah. There’s nothing specific you need. Just enough to keep you warm enough. I certainly wouldn’t be rushing out to buy stuff.

Usually I’m happy in just shorts and a long sleeve top. Sometimes I’ll double up on tops and go long sleeve and short sleeve. As Ian says hat/gloves usually end up in pockets after 10 minutes anyway. Although I have debated a “buff” to keep my head warmer but still allow more airflow.

It’s only when I’m really exposed on hills I look for more coverage.
