Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Sigh, just went to sign up for a half marathon only to be told that because of safety reasons you can't listen to music : /

http://www.elyrunners.co.uk/gruntyfen/

When you take part in one of these events and you're surrounded by hundreds of utter ****s that don't know what's going on around them because of whatever rubbish they're listening to, you'll understand. Just take in the atmosphere of the day for a change.

my local race states no headphones/ipods etc - and does enforce it you get disqualified

and quite rightly too - rules are rules

I really don't see why someone would want to run a proper race listening to music though ? if to ignore the pain - man up

if bored .. then choose another sport

I don't listen to music even on any runs, I just take in my surroundings - may as well run on a tread-mill in gym otherwise

All races that are proper races will require no music or headphones during the race.

like someone said why do you need to lisen to music during a race? man up seriously

other than that, with lots of people in races you do need to hear around you, ie somone falls down in front of you and you keep on running while they scream for help:p

Wow, Im suprised at the amount of disdain for running whilst listening to music in here.
I can understand that in the elite runner section of 'proper' races those runners would need to be much more aware of whats going on around them just for race tactics alone, but for the rest of the field I don't see why its such a big deal.
I don't believe that they would gain such an advantage that they would be a threat to the elites. I think in terms of health and safety people running in costumes would be more of a threat and people with loose shoelaces even more so. As for not being able to hear, are hearing tests now mandatory or if you are completely deaf are you not allowed to run now??
It doesn't bother me in the slightest if the people I'm running with/against are listening to music, each to their own.

I agree entirely. I doubt anyone on here runs 'proper' races.

I disagree with the whole, you aren't running a "proper" race type comment. I am, however, glad that running with music is banned in the most popular races. Runners get in the way even without music most of the time. Nothing more frustrating when you are a good 10 miles into a run.

anyone here running the british 10k in London on the 8th??

Looks like it might be fun and quick as london doesn't have many hills :)

on the music thing, I love running to music, can understand why its banned in some races, if its allowed i run with just one ear in on race day

This!

You get enough idiots that decide they want to start from the front of their wave (that they've optimistically put themselves in months earlier under the illusion that they'll train loads and be quick or something) and subsequently cause chaos at the start as hundreds of people try to dodge past at twice the speed of them without the added distraction of them blasting some rubbish music out of their 'beats' headphones.

That sounded like a massive rant when I didn't mean it to be :p

Wow. Some people on here take running WAYYY to seriously if people listening to music and/or happen to "get in your way" whilst running annoys you....

Unless you have a hope in hell of winning some prize then just run for fun. Is that not why most people started running?

Some more sense.

I can't say I pass many people with headphones after the first mile or so and don't think I've ever felt the need to announce my prescence to somebody in front of me, worried that they couldn't hear me because of headphones. In any case I'm normally putting everything into the run rather than into spotting what accessories the people around me are carrying.

I know my post came across as far to "ranty" :p but I don't run organised events/races to have fun (in the normal sense of the word anyway, maybe I'm different?), but to challenge myself along distances with accurate timing and closed roads. :)

Some more sense.

I did say that I observe it as a problem at starts i.e. in the first mile or so. I have never had to "announce my prescence to somebody in front of me, worried that they couldn't hear me because of headphones" either. I have however, had to tap on shoulders so that I could ask to be let through and dodge erratic runners who almost take me out as they can't hear that I'm there a few times , no big deal I know, but I'm guessing that these are the reasons that the rule is there?

Maybe we should leave this to rest and just say that if you are racing or in an organised run, make sure you can be aware of your surroundings?

I run for fun, but it still annoys me when people infront are oblivious to the people around them. I am not going to win any prizes, but why should it still not annoy me?

Agreed, that is another problem that just adds to the whole music debates. I always can't help but laugh at the people that rate themselves way ahead of where they actually are.

Never realised opinions were so strong and divided on this :p

wow - I started something off accidentally by stating a "proper" race - was only a term - and by proper race I only meant any organised race ...

2 points here:

most organised road races don't manage to get roads shut for the race, so I think not wearing headphones is VERY VERY valid for safety reasons

in reply to the above post - if you are running a race - even if its for "fun" - which for most of us it is (I've no chance of getting anywhere near to winning) - there must be a reason for taking part in a race rather than running on your own - be it for an official personal best time or position or for the social aspect of it ... in either case I don't see the need to wear headphones ... ?

266kcal for 5k from Endomondo? Are you roughly the same weight as a feather?! :p

Topsy turvy week or so of running for me. Still getting used to these easy runs at (for me at least) 10 or so min mile, find it hard and usually end up at about 9.50 or so but it still feels very little effort so should be ok.

My tempo run went to pot though, got about halfway through and the heavens absolutely opened and I got drenched. Gave up in the end, wind was blowing me all over the place and the rain was so heavy it hurt

Made up for that by going for a run with my mate and his Dad on Sunday - 5 miles before breakfast at 9.10/mile. Again probably horrifically slow compared to most on here but about a minute a mile faster than my smartcoach schedule is saying I should run my easy runs at. Should sort of make up for my tempo run being washed out but definitely need to make sure a proper long easy run in this week.
