Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Why do you find it harder to run slower? It can sometimes feel a bit strange running slower than you know you can but that said running at different paces and distances accordingly is what is generally going to make you a better runner. Although this very much depends on what your aims are as well as someone training to run a 5K in a certain time is never going to do the same Sunday run as someone preparing for a marathon.

If your worried about your stride/gait (how you run) potentially causing injury then I'd maybe try shortening your stride and seeing how that goes, wouldn't do it on too long a run though and would ease into it. Changing things too quickly will only lead to injury in the first place as it won't feel natural.

I have no idea on what would be causing the pain there but even if I did I know we can't discuss anything even slightly medical on here so I'll leave that anyway.

In terms of stretching as well some do and some don't. I've heard there is science behind both and therefore conflicting studies so it depends on whether or not you feel you'd benefit from stretching and if it makes a difference. Try a run stretching before and after and then try the same run but don't do anything and see what happens. I personally don't stretch and have never had any problems running, I only do this though because I don't like stretching before running as I just start slightly slower to warm up and will generally walk home after a run as my cool down so don't feel an extreme need. That said if I do get slight niggles then I will stretch in that case as mental thing more than anything else I guess.

Going to stop now in case I end up waffling. :p

I always do stretching after a run, you shouldn't really stretch cold muscles anyway, you can always do dynamic stretches before, but i find running the first 10mins at an easy pace will achieve this.

I agree with your advice to the above poster to shorten his stride, this is more natural and is better biomechanically

I really want the Nike Storm Fly jacket - I need something waterproof, but not too thick. Found it for £43 which is not too bad at all, very tempted.

While looking I found that there are Lunarglide 4s out now! I am still on the Lunarglide 2s (I really love these shoes), but I will need new ones in 6-8 weeks.

Was aiming to run 18 miles this Saturday, but having been diagnosed yesterday with a heart murmur, irregular heart beat and a slow heart rate I think I will take it a little easier until they work out what is going on. Think I will stick to 12 miles :p

I need to find something lightweight and waterproof after yesterday. I deliberately waited for the rain to pass only to get a head-to-toe soaking from some **** in an Audi who had ample opportunity to slow down or go around some flooding but chose to keep his foot down!

What sort of milage are you getting out of your shoes? I use Brooks Vapours 9s which suit my running style and after what must be getting on 1000 miles of use they still feel like new.

Get a gilet if anything. Don't see the point in long sleeve shells unless you are layering for sub zero temps. Long sleeve waterproofs are pointless imo as you'll sweat enough to soak you anyhow. A gilet and a close fitting long sleeve T is the best combo, again imo.

Hope the heart thing is nothing. I have an irregular heart beat and was told my heart rate was low - but endurance training should result in the latter and
I was told not to worry about the former, so life goes on.

I got a lightweight waterproof jacket and tried it but you are better just wearing your normal gear. Water only gets as far as your skin anyway :p

So far have about 350 miles on them, they have lost a small amount of cushioning, but I reckon they will easily pass 500 miles (I am pretty light, so don't really take much life out of them).

A good suggestion about the gilet, didn't really think about that tbh - will be going to the Nike Running store later, so will see what they have.

Hopefully the heart thing is nothing, but it has been getting quite uncomfortable recently. I just want piece of mind more than anything.

As for the Audi driver, what a **** :)

I also picked up a pair of the Lunarglide 4's today. Same colour as yourself and I only paid £40 for them as well. :D

Had a voucher from Sweatshop when I bought my Pegasus in March from them.

I've had them all since the beginning, loved the 1's and 2's but didn't get on with the 3's so hoping for good things from these.

Will be posting a picture of mine later as well maybe.

Bought these today, finally a shoe to fit my chode like feet.

What are peoples thoughts on HIIT running? I am currently exercising to lose weight (lost about 2.5 stone since Jan) and as part of my workout will run around 4 miles @ 9min 30 sec per mile pace 4 times per week.

However I have been reading that HIIT is better for general fat loss. Gave it a go the other day and ran at about 14kmh for 1 minute 30 seconds before walking at 5.5kmh for roughly 40 seconds. Did this for about 2 miles.

Does anyone use HIIT and have you seen better results?

I can't give you any advice on HIIT, but I would add that the longer you run the more calories you will burn. So you could slow down a little from 9:30 mile pace and see some improvement in weight loss.

haz_pro - nice shoes :)

Full waterproof when running = boil in the bag for me. Even in winter (with snow and sub zero - big up YakTrax), a mid-weight Merino wool top and gloves does the job.

Got a Nike rain jacket in the end - it is incredibly thin (a little delicate actually). I can't find it online, but it is really good. The rain just bounces off, but somehow it breathes and wicks sweat away aswell! Really impressed with it and it has already had a lot of use!

Have just signed up to the Reading 2013 Half Marathon, looking forward to it. Aiming for a sub 2 hour time, would be very happy with this. Frustrated that I can't find any suitable marathons to enter though (a combination of location and work commitments).

I just completed Greenlights round the rock which was good as I was only meant to do the first 22 miles as I was sweeping up stragglers at the back but my broken toe felt good so I carried on till the end.
I would recommend it as a good race it is lovely and scenic. It is also a good introduction to trail ultra racing.

If you want to go longer, try dropping Monday's and/or Wednesday's run and extending the LSR.

Rest days are just as important as the run days.
