Playing Half Life 2 for the first time

Just had to pause the game to comment on what must the coolest and unexpected part of any game I've ever played - the start of the 'Our Benefactors' chapter! After Dog shows up and lifts the huge gate - I almost squealed with delight when I jumped on to the pod and got taken on the tour. Don't want to say too much spoiler wise but wow that was so awesome!

I started playing it again months ago with some texture mod. It looked really nice, but I started doing other things and stopped playing it; haven't been back to it since. Seeing this thread pop up, reminds that I need to start playing again. :D

Amazing scene that, I can't say much but Dog makes a much more dramatic scene much further into the HL 2 series.. You thought this was an amazing and unexpected part, it only gets better..

Man I want to replay HL2 now. Such an amazing game, still stands up well to this day.

Any tips for going down the wide corridor lined with pods, walking forward into the fire of soldiers and the spider walker thing armed with only the gravity gun? I've no health left by the time I've disposed of the men and trying to take on the walker...

Nooooooooooooo! I just completed the game! :-( I hate the empty feeling you get once you've completed a great game. Didn't see that ending coming and didn't really understand it but then I've never played the first Half Life so maybe that's why?

The version I bought from Steam included Lost Coast although I don't yet have Episode 1 or 2. Is there any reason why I shouldn't go ahead and play Lost Coast before picking up Episodes 1 & 2?

Lost coast is only a tech demo - so it'll last you only ~25min max - it's a bit of fun, but nothing to do with any of the story really.

You need to follow on with Episode 1 and 2, they're both great games - a little bit short, but very, very sweet.

That is awesome isn't it, been so long since I played it and its still stuck firmly in my memory. Its also thrilling because you have to relinquish your control and basically let the enemy take you to heavens knows what fate and its in the lap of the gods.

Use the gravity gun to grab one of the pods and use it as a shield against incoming fire. The easiest way to deal with the walker is basically run like heck towards it between its legs and up into a crevice or hole at the side of the area and duck below the edge when it starts shooting, it has a recharge cycle during which you can poke your head up and shoot.

Love the feeling you get by that point you're a god basically and the combine are basically scared of you, or at least in awe.

Lost coast was cut content it was supposed to fit in somewhere you remember where you crossed over high over the river underneath the bridge? Theres a missing map around there it was supposed to slot in there somewhere or other. Its just a demo now.

Been looking to buy Episodes 1 & 2. Cheapest around seems to be a used DVD ROM from Amazon but I'm just not sure how that works. If you buy the dvd of game now you need a key/code to activate it - was this system not in place back then? If I buy a used ROM will I be able to play it alright?

I'd avoid buying a used ROM as ut could have been activated against another Steam account meaning you are buying a coaster!

Wait for a Steam sale - very regular :)

Just bought a brand new ROM of Episode One from Amazon however when I hit autorun it is asking for a product key. Usually there would be a booklet with the key but there isn't one in the box or anywhere else. Anyone got any ideas to help me?

Edit: So I contacted the seller who just apologised, refunded me and told me to keep the disc. I can't help feeling I'm missing something though. Or was it just a case that the booklet with the product key code was missing? I guess I'll never know...

Just finished playing through HL1, HL2 and the two episodes, pretty good but kinda got a bit bored towards the end but still a lot better than a lot of recent releases :)

at least i wasnt the only one that thought this. Compared to HL1 it was a let down.

Certainly is, IMO, one of the most overrated games. Especially when you consider it was 4 years after the master piece that is Deus Ex.

Don't get be wrong, i still love the story. The gameplay was just uninvolving and simple.
