Playing Half Life 2 for the first time

I haven't played HL1 either. Doesn't take anything away from what was a brilliant gaming experience. I intend to pick up the fan made remake of HL1 Black Mesa at some point in the not too distant future...

Poison head crabs scared me so much in this game :(

Awful things!

I bought HL2 on release day but haven't completed it yet. Started playing it the other week and have got quite a bit further than on previous attempts. Didnt realise it was quite this long, surely I must be at the end soon.

Thoroughly enjoying it though.

HL2 is amazing, played it every day till it was completed. Its a snickers man sized bar of a game, modern games are just snack size :o
Not sure why I havent done the episodes yet though

Same! Still need to play ep 1and 2. I think knowing that episode 2 ended in a way that a 3rd episode was maybe expected leaves me feeling like there's no point playing if it doesn't have a satisfying conclusion

The only thing disappointing about the episodes is that they aren't long enough. They are a fair enough length as far as expansions/DLCs go it's just they're so great you want more... do yourself a favour and pick them up. I picked them both up as DVD ROMs from Amazon for £2-3 each.

You need to go play Portal 1 & 2 now as well.

Portal 1 was just superb, a real genre changer. Not quite as much "story" as Portal 2, but both are incredible in their own way.

Ties in with the "Half-Life" universe by being the competing company to "Black Mesa", "Aperture Science", which I believe is referenced in HL2:EP2.

Cinematic mod is a nice improvement, although some of the later mods have gone a bit 'Lara Croft-esque' with Alex.... which is a shame, but you can customise the mod pretty well.

Yeah i tend to upgrade the environment but keep all the original models for the characters. There's a HD version of the textures for the characters as well built in the options. So i just use those, i think it's the best compromise

You need to follow on with Episode 1 and 2, they're both great games - a little bit short, but very, very sweet.

Yep, and Alyx flirts heavily at you throughout the whole of Episode 2 :o

It does get to you in a certain scene because of the attachment you start to feel with her. People who've played Ep2 will know what i'm talking about :p

Many good memories, especially the build up to the release. Pre loading the game and hanging around on #hl2 IRC channel where everyone was going mental with excitement lol. It was release at around 8:30am uk time and i actually went to college instead of staying home...lost some serious man points that day!.

Nah you were fine, even the fledgling Steam was swamped with people trying to play for the first 24 hours or so. After waiting so long, I remember cursing Steam that day, although it was worth the wait.

Definitely planning a HL day over Christmas, still probably the best gaming I've played so far.

Oh? I'd always been slightly put off as I had seen them described as 'puzzle games'. I don't mind the odd puzzle in a game such as in the Tomb Raider games or Darksiders but a game that is predominantly all puzzles would likely frustrate me. Do the Portal games has a decent story and similar game mechanics to Half Life then?

I too am on my first playthrough of this game, I'm loving it so far but not got very far into it yet, I completed HL1 years ago and LOVED every second of it :)

one quick question, where do I get these texture/graphics mods etc and which one is the best? could someone possibly post a link :)

thanks

It is one big puzzle game, but it's not a puzzle game as you think, these really did redefine the genre.

Story line is great with it too, really good stuff, remember it well from the first play through!
