PlayStation 4 Pro in-bound

As long as all future PS4.5 games are backwards compatible and work on the PS4 then I don't mind this move. I'm sceptical that Sony will manage to make the console a true 4K machine though.

I doubt also it will be a true 4K machine it will probably just still be 1080p for games but support 4k blu-ray / video streaming ect:)

Yeah but it takes 2-3 years to see a good line up of decent games for current gen consoles.

This is true, but maybe this explains the "4.5" bit. They're x86 architecture right? So surely you could bump up CPU and GPU speed, and then make it "backwards compatible" with other PS4 games.

I think games consoles will become something like iPhones/iOS....

I remember the first year or so many holding out buying the PS4 since most said the first year or so had a poor amount of good games. There were lots of complaints, or has most forgotten about that? As I was itching to order but held out.

I thought the whole selling point was that 'it is powered by he PS4 you have', reducing the cost of entry to £350 + camera/move.

My question is what about the people that have already bought PS4s like me?
I'm not just gonna go buy another one - especially now that I'm worried they'll do it agin. This is coming from a PC gamer as well so I'm used to upgrading.

If I need to go buy another PS4 to get the best experience I'll just go buy the Rift and cancel my PSVR preorder

Glad I did hold out for the whisper quiet version. Still, it is a little gutting only having the console for 3 months to get all these stories.

Seeing as "a rig" won't let me play the likes of Uncharted, £280 for a PS4 was money very-well spent.

Fantastic games they were, even on the PS3.

I hate being right all the time, and I did say this when both of the new consoles launched. They lacked the horsepower from day one plain and simple. Consoles have a good what? 7-10 year lifespan, launching a machine which struggles to do even 1080p was just plain stupid.....yet the majority of people couldn't see it. Oh well, it's not like we couldn't see this coming.

I highlighted if I need to buy one to get the best experience. I.e if the graphically intensive VR games need a new PS4 or work better with a new PS4.
In that case personally the Rift would be a better buy.

well the rift requires a gaming pc for starters so you're £1,000 down straight away.

7-10 years for modern consoles...? PS4 has 3-5 years max before PS5 I reckon. The industry is now moving too quickly and VR will only accelerate this.

Yes but I already have a gaming PC so..... I don't mind upgrading my PC on an on-going basis either as I keep fairly up to date anyway as a hobby. I didn't sign up to keep buying new PS4s though.

New PS4 + PSVR = ~£600
Oculus Rift <=£600

PC experience will probably be better and have a higher fidelity.
But you never know may keep the current PS4 for the office/PC room and grab the PS4K/PSVR for the living room if it turns out to be that good, but a hard sell and very unlikely at the moment.

Anyway we'll see what happens and wait until the announcement.

It would most likely just be the same games but they just output at 4K resolution

The same way PC games are the expect same game if your playing it at 1280x720 or 1920x1080 or 3840 x 2160 etc

awesome sauce! - was looking at getting another PS4 console soon (to seperate my sons gaming sessions from me :) - Gunna hang fire till the end of the year for this one now.

I doubt however it will be true 4K gaming support - more like enhanced support for 4K blu-rays etc and a bit more umph for normal PS4 games.

Seems like this is picking up steam...

A verified leaker on GAF as well has said it will be the end of the year!!!

Did not see this. Time to pack it up and go PC gaming what with Xbox doing it as well.

We're done here folks.

I think this deserves a new thread.

clicky clicky clicky, gotta catch all of dem baits.

kotaku, part of gawker media which has just lost $115 mill to hogan gotta make some of that back i guess :p

Don't report clickbait unconfirmed rumours as news

Ugh, I hate being the cynical realist who has to remind people to calm the heck down, cos this is just a rumour. Yesterday was literally a rumourmill day full of nonsense. Let me break it down with some reasoning why there won't be a 4k console this year or even anytime soon. Feel free to debate against if you feel any of the following is invalid:

1) The PS4 and XB1 are still relatively young. They haven't even been out for 3 years and they are already being replaced/upgraded? Doesn't seem right and more importantly, folks who already bought existing models would just ragequit and move over to PC or something. I know there's a lot of salt and hate over similar iterations in other types of hardware *cough* iPhone *cough*

2) 4k gaming on console is a long way off. Considering that even PCs require well over a grand worth of high end hardware, just to get games playable at 4k30 with reduced settings. Either a 2016 4k console will be very expensive or it'll be a while yet before we get 4k consoles. And I know a lot of folks won't be willing to spend PC prices on consoles...

3) Modern consoles haven't even truly hit 1080p60, many of these console titles fail to maintain 60fps at true 1080p. For them to jump straight to 4k when they haven't even mastered 1080p? Do they think they can do 4k as well as they do 1080p? Or is console 4k just going to be lower native resolution upscaled?

4) 4k TVs. Now I know this is mainly a PC hardware forum and that 4k PC monitors are cheaper, but the majority of console gamers use their consoles on TV screens. And we all know how expensive 4K TVs are right now... they make the coveted G-sync 1440p monitors look cheap. Not many people would be interested in buying a 4k TV in addition, or everyone will move over to 4k monitors out of affordability. So even if this 4k functionality was just 4k Blu-rays... how many people do you think could honestly use it?

5) Previous attempts at doing this. Remember the Nintendo 64 expansion pack? Remember the 32X for Sega Genesis? How many games used those? How well did they sell? And those were just add-ons, this sounds to be a whole console. Move forward to smaller things like the 'new' 3DS. Oh and I almost forgot the PSP Go. They barely barely changed anything and there's very little reason to buy one if one already owns previous models. Granted, only companies like Nintendo and Sega have really tried things like this.

Please stop taking random unconfirmed rumours as gospel and overhype things to the point of unrealistic expectations. I really hate rumours right now. I've avoided a lot of places on the internet due to the stinking pile of rumours for things like Nintendo NX and upcoming games.

To play the Devil's Advocate:

Now, let's consider this isn't a rumour and is somehow proven legit. What could it be then? As many folks have stated, the 4k functionality, if any, likely alludes to 4k blu-ray. Looking around, I don't see too many 4k blu-rays or much 4k content. I know folks with 4k TVs are feeling the burn because there really isn't much 4k content avilable right now for them to consume. I guess one could argue such compatibility is future-proofing however.

The only other thing I can think of is PSVR. But the thing is.. PSVR comes with an extra box for increased processing power doesn't it? So perhaps this so called PS4.5 is actually a 'VR edition' of the PS4. It's very possible that it has the functionality of the extra VR box built-in and this thing comes bundled with a PSVR. That's the only thing that I can think of that seems viable. Perhaps that is exactly what this is. A more compact and 'easier' console VR experience.

TLDR Stop getting your knickers in a twist, 4k console gaming isn't happening for a long time yet. If anything, this is likely a PSVR bundle of sorts.
