PlayStation 4 Pro in-bound

mahius, I remember all the hype from people more so Xbox 360 with the upscaling chip and people insulting the poor PS3 upscaling back in 2007. All you got from so many Xbox fans thinking they were playing native 1080. The size of their egos was amusing.

All the endless excitement and hype for 1080 gaming. Still feels like only yesterday forums full of it and most games weren't even 720.

Remember it all, next gen, next gen and more next gen? Look at it today. Still isn't true 1920x1080/60fps and full of endless eye candy.

Mahius - good post bud. I don't think it will actually happen but as the power just isn't there and I think Sony are well aware that a GPU refresh would split their market. They are better off investing into the PS5 and releasing that in 3 years hopefully up to the task of 4K.

I hope they find a way to get the PU to do some gfx processing for VR so we get some great games

I can't believe we will see 4K gaming anytime soon, the current consoles aren't always achieving 1080p currently. They need a GPU bump to achieve 1080p let alone 4K.

I reckon the update will add 4K bluray support and upscaling. They might bump the GPU performance to get better FPS at the same res the standard PS4 supports but I doubt they'd go beyond that.

I'm also out of the GPU loop, but is a single chipped GPU even capable to fit into the realm of a console size with cooling/ power consumption?

I don't own a console from the current generation, but I see the next 5 years as a make or break for VR. If the current gen can't run "proper" games on it, it won't sell well, and therefore the next gen won't be able to fully commit to it from a business point of view. If this is what it takes to make VR more popular, then I'm all for it. It might not work that way of course, but I just don't want VR to do a kinect/3D TV on us :o

VR is a gimmick. much like kinect. much like the original wii.

it will bomb. people will buy it and then after 3 months it will sit and gather dust once the appeal has worn off.

it may be good for single player games. however why not stick the £400 towards a 55" tv and sit closer to it?

You have clearly never tried VR if you can seriously suggest that it is the same as sitting closer to a TV.

LOL what a stupid viewpoint, sitting nearer to a TV is somehow the equal of VR? Do you strap it to your head so when you turn around theres a picture there?

ps3ud0

Well if this is true.....I'm out. I switched to consoles to save time and expense. Having to do that every two years doesn't make it viable. I'll get whatever Nintendo pushes out so the kids can play Lego and just get another hobby.

I don't understand why people are upset about this. Your PS4 isn't having capability taken away from it as far as I can see, it's merely a product being released that can perform functions that the PS4 isn't up to. Is it a case of not being happy because there's something newer and shinier than the thing you recently bought? Jealousy of people who own the better one? You don't *have* to buy it if/when it comes out, and as far as I can see from reading, none of the rumours seem to be implying that it is intended as a replacement for the PS4, it's simply an improvement on the platform for certain functions that will require it.

Me neither. Products get upgraded all the time. Look at mobile phones; I could get a new one tomorrow and it will have an upgraded model later this year.
I've had my PS4 2 1/2 years now. Which is a lot longer than I'd keep a mobile phone. If a newer version came out this year then I'd be happy to upgrade if it meant I can keep and play all my existing games on it.

But you don't have to do it. There is no expense if you decide not to buy the new version.

It wouldn't surprise me to see an update to X1 and PS4, perhaps with something like AMDs Xconnect tech to allow the internal GPU to continue to work on the base device and give the opportunity to add a second external more powerful dGPU.

Whilst we might see locked 60fps at 1080p and perhaps 4K output for Netflix etc I'm deeply sceptical we'll see "proper" 4K gaming in a console any time soon given the costs of even a GPU to be able to drive 4K gaming consistently much less the rest of the console. Having said that perhaps something based on a custom version of NVidia Pascal giving 980Ti performance at a lower price would be enough. For me I think we'd need to see more performance than that if we're to avoid the same problems we have with this gen, lets not replace a console that barely manages to do 1080p consistently at a decent FPS with a next gen that can just scrape 4K at a push as long as you don't have too much on screen just so you can claim "4K gaming".

I don't fundamentally have a problem with publishers being able to produce games which run at 1080p/60hz and have a "enhanced" mode with 4K textures for consoles which support it though. It's been like that forever for PCs and doesn't break the ability for people to play competitively or lead to less variety in gaming.

I only bought my PS4 for Uncharted, MGS and Gran Turismo, couldn't care less about VR it doesn't interest me in the slightest. I can see why some people might be upset though, the console has only been out a couple of years, we were probably all expecting some sort of hardware revision, but normally, over the past couple of console generations at least, that has meant less power consumption, more reliable hardware or a smaller form factor. If this new revision comes out and developers start to not bother optimising games for the launch spec PS4 then that would be a bit crappy.
