PlayStation Classic

I don't really see age ratings as an issue because it isn't exactly targeting kids of today it's going after the millions who grew up playing PlayStation's. I think the listings for it already have provisional 18 ratings.

The highest age rated game on the current list 12 which is Tekken 3.

Also this is Sony we are talking about, the same company who released a games console and instead of implementing backwards compatibility(which they could). They rather you to pay £12.99 a month for a rubbish game streaming service to play previous gen games.

Sony wants to get this into as many hands as possible for all ages so they can make maximum profit. It makes business sense, so why add a bunch of adult rated games which will cut off access to certain customers when sold? Still it can be dependent on region.

If Sony cared that much about nostalgia then they would release these games in a combo collection pack for £40 on PSN and retail disk.

I love to see Tenchu on there and cut off some peoples heads, doubt it :D but they could surprise us!

Would be nice to have Rapid Reload, not very well known game but its like Gun Star Heroes, was an PS1 launch title and goes for stupid money on Ebay. I bet Sony would op for something stupid like Tomba instead :(

Why can't ps4 allow me to play ps1/2 games?

Just seems like a pointless money grab

the architecture is completely different. sony is a hardware company not a software one.

so basically you need an emulator. it's too hard for sony to make an emulator and not cost effective.

let's be honest retro gaming is a very niche market. only a handful of people actually would play these games longer than a couple of weeks.

iirc the only sony console with BC has been the PS2. after that they changed to that crazy CPU with all the cores. the cell or whatever which was great but never took off. therefore there was no way to make the ps3 BC without putting a PS2 inside it which they did do on the cheap for launch consoles which sold out instantly. every console after that didn't have that chip inside it. so the majority weren't BC.

then they moved from the cell to PC architecture. again completely different to everything before it. you would now need 2 emulators. the emulator for the cell would likely be impossible to make because the ps3 was so unique.

long story short. it's not cost effective enough. if you want to play them why didn't you keep your old console or buy an old one off ebay?

PS2 games on the PS4 which doesn't use PS Now runs through emulation. They have the resources and the tech but they rather charge for it per game.

There is a ps2 emulator built into every ps4

Can you put a PS2 disc inside a PS4? Or is it games bought from PSN store only?

Also my point still stands on the PS3. I think it would be very hard to get an emulator for that. Not impossible but a lot of effort.

Also does every PS2 game work or only some? I heard a lot of stories about some games not working, etc usually when BC is involved.

Yeah PS3 cant be emulated on the PS4, hence they created PS Now but for PS2 it only plays the games which you buy off PSN via the PS4 not from retail discs. That's where Microsoft have the upper hand.

So it's not an emulator at all they have probably just converted a bunch of games.

Sony have never done emulation. It's always been done by hardware rather than software or part hardware.

Sony is crap at making software. Well known. Hardware wise they are leagues ahead. My original PS1 still worked as did my PS2 and PS3 when their successors arrived.

I had mine opened up too for modification and the guy said it was the cleanest one he had seen inside. I look after my things more than most folk do.

Anyway Sony don't do emulators. However ps5 will be the first console with the same architecture as the previous. So ps5 will be BC from day one.

I don't think they will sway now from pc architecture.

No, its actual emulation not ports of PS2 games. we have HD remasters for that. Download a PS2 game off the PSN PS4 store and see for yourself how it scales and the way it boots.

Also if you go down the dark paths of "the scene" hackers/modders said PS2 games on PS4 store are emulated as the file structure is the same compared the original PS2 discs.

Sony has done emulation in past, look at the PSP with PS1 games. The PS Vita also.

Some versions of the PS3 used emulation to run PS2 games.

I agree that BC is a must for PS5 since Microsoft have commited to BC it would be a major drawback for Sony not to do the same for future consoles.

it wasn't all emulation on the ps3. they had a chip inside them. that is why only some versions ran it. they removed the chip to cut costs.

Not sure what makes you think this, they absolutely have emulators for almost all of their systems. What they haven't done is make that emulator broadly available on their consoles, or necessarily support original discs.

All PS1 games play on PS3 via software emulation.
Some PS2 games play on PS3 and PS4 via software emulation.

If you have access to a PS3 or PS4 with custom firmware you can even confirm this yourself and you can pretty much dump an original disc ISO to the system and boot it via their emulator (with varying degrees of success as there isn't 100% compatibility).
