***** PlayStation Vita Official Thread *****

So how come the vita has no flash support?

Adobe stopped all mobile flash development and shut the team down. They see how far HTML5 and Java has come.

On another note, how would members rate the screen?
Any lag or blurring or poor colours?

Must resist impulse buy... :o
Have you ever seen or used a Samsung Galaxy II or Galaxy Nexus? It has an OLED screen just like those phones and colours are excellent, contrast is on par with a CRT, refresh rate is 0.01ms (no blur).

4 matches in Fifa, and I've still not managed to score, is it me or is it rock hard?

Tips wanted.

I'm crap at Fifa so it's probably just us :p what mode are you playing on?

For those of you who noticed my post about opening the browser while playing a game, here is a tweet exchange I had with Shuhei Yoshida.

vitabrowser.jpg

To open the browser while playing a game, go into twitter if you use it and click on a web link. The browser will open and not shut the game down.

anyone else having any problems getting the wipeout code from voda ?

Still no luck? Jesus.

So can you just confirm.

1) you have received the confirmation code on your vita from Vodafone that registers your Vita with the card?
2) you received a welcome to Vodafone message?
3) you have topped up? how did you do that?

ahh sorry I've not noticed, now I've clocked your avatar I'll remember you, I just looked at your profile and saw that you only 334 posts and thought you didn't post much but I see your a relatively new member, don't forget where your home is (OcUK):p, I myself ended up neglecting OcUK forums for a while when I first got into gaf but I'm trying to contribution more here now.

add me to your friends list mate, PSN : lowrider007

Will do. I didn't make a 4000 word OT without love for OCUK, fear not :)

GAF just fly past when the Americans are awake though. Quite interesting stuff gets blown over because stuff grows so fast.

Finally I got my CODE !!!!!!!!!!

also played my first game online on fifa and I was winning 3-0 and the guy quite !!!

Finally!

My PS Vita is coming tomorrow morning
How do I transfer my PSP and PS1 games that I have purchase via my PSP or PS3 onto it?
Do I need to download them again or is there an easier way?

Your PS1 games will not work yet. PS1 support is coming soon but we have not ETA yet. The only way is to download them I think. They'll appear as bubbles on the PS3 and you can transfer them over on the content manager. Many you can also download straight onto the Vita.

My girlfriend was just playing the vita and twice the screen went off and the blue light flickered a few times! Just went in to standby mode but was wondering if this is a fault?

It happened on tales from space, battery is fine etc bit worrying

How long had it been since she last touched the screen? What is your standby time set to? The default is 1 minute.

Another Gaffer here too.

Cool :) Nice to see more faces

Members on the NeoGAF forum. Predominantly gaming based. Fairly strict rules which keeps things mostly sensible.

I made this lock screen which I am using.

Also escape plan is amazing fun :D deffo a great game tbh.

Looking good, did you make them from scratch or did you find the template to show you where the lines and stuff are?

Motorstorm RC is brilliant - for less than a fiver!

I just got the wifi from Sainsburys as I can tether it to my HTC through wifi hotspot. 199.99 with uncharted. Bargain.

Yeah the tethering works well. I downloaded the Fifa demo over mine :D hurrah for a 3gb allowance that I never use lol.

I totally get why people want the WiFi over the 3G. I like not having to faff with tethering all the time when I'm playing something like motorstorm away from a network though.

Oh Right lol!

I just walked into Sainsburys on Tuesday and bought the bloody thing off the shelf! I only went in for some pasta.

Impulse buying at its best :)

No, it's pretty much best in class. Its an AMOLED.

Super AMLOLED+ apparently. So even better.

does anyone know if i can get an 8gb memory card and have games on that, and have a 16gb one aswell with games? and just switch them over when i want to play certain games?

Yes you can. Obviously that'll mean you can only play those games with those memory cards in.

Why would you be doing that btw?

EDIT: Loving the leaderboards on Motorstorm RC by the way. ryryryan currently ranked 32nd on the first track (Mixing bowl), and I can beat his ghost for about half the race, just need to string it together. This kind of online is perfect for me with my internet connection so I hope lots more games support it.

I think I'm addicted to Everybody's Golf, not even went to bed yet, been playing it all night :o

Lucky I'm on a weeks paid vacation atm.

Yeah I agree, I love 'autolog' type systems implemented into games, it's really made chasing leader board times fun again.

Yeah I saw your post, that's one late night!

For me the Motorstorm functionality is perfect, I beat a time so it automatically downloads the next ghost or two. I think it's also downloading the fastest one as well so you can see what they are doing.

Also being able to see a time in the pitwall and just click go and it takes you to that race ready to roll is nice.

Is they a way to see a full list of what's installed and how much space it takes? Rather then holding each icon at a time and pressing information?

Not that I am aware of. You can see how much free space you have left in the settings though.

No faff at all tbh, even though I have a 3G vita I have it disabled all the time and tether to my phone when I want a connection away from home, all it takes is hitting my hotspot icon on the main screen of my phone, vita picks it up automatically and done.

I do this due to the absolute arse 3G connection the Vita seems to have, I am getting about 1 - 1.7mbs through Vita's 3G but around about 3.4 - 4.2mbs using my phone.

Have you tried your phones sim in your vita? It could just be that Vodafone have limited the speed.

When I'm playing a game I'm not leaving tethering on for 30 minutes to continually download lap times and stuff, my phone needs to have battery to last for the day.

My phone also has the hotspot on the home screen so I can turn it on fairly fast, I just cba. For the sake of £5 a month or £18 for 6 months like some of those deals are for 3G it's cheap enough for me to keep using my phone as I always have and occasionally use it's data to download large files if I really want them

Hey DBT did you messages on the PSV? I feel the messaging system is a bit clumsy on this thing... not sure Im using it right lol.

I did mate and I sent one back. I missed the first one you sent as I've grown in popularity since Wednesday lol

can the 3G only be used for downloading demos/games/patches etc ? wondering if there's any real reason to go for a 3G version
also, do you have to sign up for a contract or put credit on the sim card ?

You cannot download any file larger than 20MB over 3G. So some apps and small patches will be fine as well any games that just send small bits of data for a-syncronous gaming like HotShots. It's not contract based, you just top up as much as you want, and you can use any provider you like.

You can use contracts or a PAYG sim with it, TBH I was gamming on a 3G connection last year and it was fine, so I don't see why that can't allow online gaming on it

Another bonus is you get Wipeout 2048 for £5 with the 3G one

3G is ok for some games in some situations. You cannot play COD over a 3G connection if you are on the train. That is why they have disabled it, it would be a PR and customer service nightmare if they told you you could play COD or Fifa over 3G and it kept dropping out due to massive lag spikes which happen over 3G.

Gaming over 3G when you have a stable connection can be fine, but when moving it's just not good enough and would cause more problems for Sony and gamers that it's worth

I just looked up the specs of this thing, 512MB of ram and and 128mb of vram

why arent portable gaming devices up to 2GB of ram yet? they really seem to be lacking behind, when you consider that the average PC has at least 3GB of ram. Hell the PS3 only has 256MB of ram, shouldn't it be competing with PC's?

*waits for the obvious RAM isn't everything replies*

With respect, the PS3 and Xbox360 only have 512 mb of total ram. Clearly you don't need 3gb on a portable if you don;t need it on a console.

Why make an obviously flawed point and then saiy "waits for obvious reply"

Your phone might have 1gb of ram in it, but games only get access to about 10% of it. The Vita games get access to a much larger amount of ram by comparison.

I bought Gran Turismo PSP from the PS Store, would I be able to download and play this on the Vita?

Yes. I don't know if its in the Vita store but if not you can just download it on a PS3 if you have one and transfer it over.

Any missing games from the Vita PSP store are being added.

How long you think it will take before it gets hacked to run homebrew apps? VLC would be nice on the Vita

There is no need for it to be hacked to get vlc on it. The PS Suite will allow devs to release apps and games on all PS Suite certified devices justice the app store.

Honestly I hope it doesn't get properly hacked, I have no desire to play snes roms and homebrew always leads to piracy.

Apparently it's already hacked for home brew through an exploit of a psp game that's on the store. No word yet on release but I think it will be soon.

Only the PSP emulator on the Vita is hacked. Only stuff that was payable on a hacked PSP is playable on the Vita through that hack.

It's not obviously flawed, think of the potential in a portable gaming device if it had similar graphical and processing power that a PC has

It would have he potential to run for about 4 minutes on anything smaller than a car battery. I know people want bite sized gameing but is that not taking it a bit far?

If they could make a portable that powerful they wouldn't need a whole pc to do it.

I'm not entirely sure you understand what you are asking. The next generation of home consoles MIGHT have 4GB of RAM, in all likelyhood that's going to be closer to 2GB. If you want even that much in a portable the price going to be extreme. People are already saying the Vita is too expensive even with all the deals.

Don't insult me, I understand my statement completely, consoles are lagging behind PC's for the exact reason you mentioned, the cost.

The iPad 2 has fairly good graphics and yeah the OS is pretty complex compared to the PS3's XMB but technology is always improving, a decent portable gaming device is just what is needed to give PC's and consoles a run for their money

I'm not insulting you, I have no idea of your knowledge of processors, memory, architecture, die processes, TDPs, fabrication processes, etc. All I have to go on are your proposals and suggestions it seems to me and apparently others that you don't know what you are asking for. Whether that is genuine lack of knowledge on your part, being badly worded, or being misinterpreted by me I don't know.

To create a portable gaming device with a similar level of performance to a current day mid to high end PC at a price point 100 millino people might ever be able to actually afford would take a feat of technical engineering as yet unheard of in the world of computing.

The iPad is powerful but were it displaying on your 24" monitor or a 40" TV it would look abysmal. It looks good precisely because it ISN'T outputting on those sized displays.

I just do not understand why anyone would put 2gb of ram in a portable console, that could never use it all without substantial CPU and GPU upgrades, into a portable device when the next gen home consoles will only just be getting that much.

It's just financially and technologically not a sensible business decision in any way shape or form.

If you feel I've misunderstood you please let me know exactly what it is you want to see in a portable console at a reasonable price point.

Your comment was

think of the potential in a portable gaming device if it had similar graphical and processing power that a PC has

What am I misreading?

Well im going to get a vita but cant find the right bundle, the only one i can find i like has an 8gb memory card but i know for a fact that wont be enough because i play on getting a few games off the store, so was going to get a 16gb aswell when the 8gbs full.

Why not just sell the 8gb and stick with the 16? You can transfer your games off to a PC/MAC/PS3 so you don't have to re-download them.

It'll work fine though. You do need to turn the Vita off, hot swapping will not work and if you try it will just tell you that you need to reboot.

I've got Wipeout, Motorstorm RC, Escape Plan, Super Stardust Delta, the Fifa Demo (1.5gb!) and 1GBs worth of videos on mine and I have some room left on an 8GB card.

My mistake, I am in no means saying that by 2013 we will see a PSP or PS4/5 with 4GB of RAM and 2GB VRAM graphics cards. As you quite rightly say the cost of producing that anytime soon would be crazy.

But wouldn't it be nice to be able to see the kind of graphics you see on your PC on your phone or on a PS Vita/Nintendo DS

TBH, I'm surprised just how bad the 3DS's graphics actually are considering Nintendo were, at one point at the top of the portable gaming craze.

Obviously the smaller the screen the better the graphics look, as you say, upscaling the iPad makes the graphics look awful. So surely to make amazing graphics on the small scale would be easy?

I'd love to see that kind of fidelity on a handheld and bearing in mind how good some games look in the Vita (I've shown two "normal" gamers who love Uncharted, BF3 and Skyrim Uncharted Golden Abyss and Wipeout and both said several swear words), IF there is another generation (many would say that smartphones will have replaced everything by that point) then games may reach that kind of fidelity.

But in 7 years time, when these devices are going to be being unveiled, what are your PC games going to look like?

On the subject of Nintendo, they've never really been graphical beasts. They have a stable of franchises that have a huge fanbase and will sell well almost regardless of anything else. Nintendo decided that the 3DS aspect of the 3DS would be enough to hook people in like the motion control did with the Wii. Sony went for high fidelity, high power, OLED high resolution (comparatively) instead.

I've no idea which company might have a better result, All I know is that competition is great for gamers. The better Nintendo do the better Sony will have to do to compete. If the launch line-up is anything to go by then the Vita has a good chance of doing well.

Well cheers guys and gals, reading this thread has pushed me to buy one.

Wi-Fi version with 8GB Memory card, Everybody's Golf and Dungeon Hunter for £308, felt a little steep , how does it compare?

I think there was a better choice of game in the deals at GAME but considering their circumstances I went to the only other local place that had them which was Argos :D.

Can I buy PS points on my debit card to purchase games on the PSstore too?

Amazon will sell you that collection for £261.56 =/ sorry.

As for PSN, yes you can top up with your credit/debit card via the Vita or a PS3 or on the website or you can buy PSN vouchers in shops.

What cases have everyone got ?

I've ordered the Thrustmaster VIP one, it's not out until the 2nd of March though

Thinking of saleing my one all ready the psn network is pants been trying to down load a demo all day all of them get to the end of the down load then give a error

What demo is it and are you downloading to the vita or to the PS3 and transferring it? Is that the only thing wrong with it?

Real bummer for me today, finally my Amazon bundle order for the 3G arrived, opened the box and.............it's the wifi version :(

To be fair though Amazons customer service was pretty good and they've sorted me a free returns label and sent me another one first class, just means I've now got Rayman, Everybodys golf, an 8gb memory card, a case but no Vita!!

Ahh balls that's annoying.
