Plusnet Discussion Thread

Most of the speed you get is completely dependant on the Openreach equipment. You'll be stuck with that even if you change ISPs.

If there's a line fault that can be addressed get it dealt with.

I was getting around 55 down once they fixed the previous fault, then since Jan its been going down and now under 36. Also last time when doing a BT test it was showing I was on a lower profile which seems to be the case again. I don't know if this happens automatically for some reason or not. BT speed check doesn't show me diagnostics keep getting and error on the website.

i'm fighting with them atm .. router went off 2 nights in a row for 2-6 hrs ..
now my speeds have dropped to 44mb with a ping of 25-30ms crap .. a week or so ago it was 58mb and 12ms .. with ee it was 64mb and 10ms
they want to send out an engineer and charge me £65 .. ********
told them just reset the exchange dslam ? either that or i'm leaving

So presumably some external fault knocked out the connection and that triggered DLM causing your connection speed to drop.

If the fault is fixed DLM will eventually return your connection to normal. If it isn't fixed (e.g. noisy line) it needs to be fixed, and then DLM can do its thing.

Blaming (or praising) an ISP for the connection quality when it's all based on Openreach equipment is pointless.

AFAIK the ISPs still haven't got the facilities to trigger a DLM reset themselves. As you're on VDSL there isn't an exchange DSLAM for them to reset.

Last year BT was doing something out in the street and knocked my broadband out for about 30 minutes. When it came back on the speed had just about halved. A few weeks later it was all back to normal.

Plusnet have, as I have asked for it before via their forum.
In my case however, whilst a DLM reset restored "missing" bandwidth for a while, my line has settled back into a "banded" state, likely due to either the poor quality of line (fairly long line) and/or crosstalk.

However it is still above the handback threshold by a reasonable amount, so nothing more to be done at this stage - just a case of waiting for FTTP to eventually be rolled out.

Can anyone recommend a router (+ modem) that has good QoS controls for plusnet (fibre)? Both bandwidth per device and device priority ideally.

For some reason over the last few days I've started having pretty bad latency spikes over ethernet every 4-5 seconds whenever any video streaming is happening in the house - netflix/amazon/twitch all seem to cause it to varying degrees with netflix being by far the worst offender. I need to get on to plusnet support about it but I suspect getting them to solve this issue will be like drawing blood from a stone. Hopefully being able to limit the bandwidth on the offending device (ps4) will solve the problem.

Been meaning to replace the router anyway as their hub is pretty crap wifi wise - the 5ghz effectively doesn't work due to a well reported firmware issue and the range on the 2.4ghz is awful.

Is anyone else getting almost 700ms ping times to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 tonight?

EDIT: Nevermind, it's back to normal now. My g/f was uploading to Google Drive, doh.

What's Plusnet like with new builds homes? Has anyone run into any problems setting up a connection. I'm moving next month so no phoneline is activated so I cant find out what speeds I'm likely to get.

If the address is on the Openreach database (which it should be by now really) - then you should be able to check... Try here with your house number & postcode https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL/AddressHome

But no, there shouldn't be any issues really with any ISP moving into a new build. They aren't any different :p Can you not get FTTP? Most new builds have FTTP installed now...

You probably have VDSL at a minimum which is on average 75 Mbps downloads / 20 Mbps uploads. It is what I have right now with PlusNet. Moving to Cambridge Fibre for full FTTP in October.

As above, if it's a new build then it's most likely FTTP and Plusnet won't be able to give you anything other than ADSL.

Thanks shall be giving them a go then. Tried that online form not getting anything come up: The address you input could not be matched.

How long should it take to be on the database?

Does your address appear on Royal Mail's address finder yet? If not, get onto the developer as they should've got that updated a while ago. Or you can ping Royal Mail yourself on that page I believe somewhere. From memory when I had issues moving in, the RM address database had some tie in to Openreach's linking my line for some reason. Probably a load of rubbish, but either way you need that sorting. :p

Openreach should have their own database updated if the line is installed... Have you asked the developer if the line has been installed? The site manager should know. He should also know whether it's FTTP or not... Also worth trying any already built homes on the new estate, on the Openreach database and see what they have available internet wise?

Another train of thought, have you been in any of the homes built already (or show home)? Do you know if they had an Openreach ONT on the wall in the living room, hall way or cupboard? If they do then that's an indication you can get FTTP - they will look like this or this...

Has anyone ever experienced a problem where your line appears to have a hard download throughput limit imposed on it?

My line syncs at ~52.5mbit and my maximum data rate is ~50.4mbit, but if I download anything from anywhere (and run speedtests) I cannot get anything more than 44mbit.

When I was on TalkTalk prior to switching to Plusnet I used to get the max download speed and nothing on my side has changed.

6. Data rate: 9805 / 50400
7. Maximum data rate: 9804 / 52741
8. Noise margin: 6.1 / 3.4
9. Line attenuation: 33.9 / 23.0
10. Signal attenuation: 33.7 / 20.6

EDIT: Maybe my line is "banded"?

Hi, Looked on the royal mail site doesn't seem to come up. So I will chase them up its a housing association so all I have had is a virtual viewing as they weren't letting anyone go inside. It wasn't a good viewing so I couldn't tell if there was a Openreach FTTP, The only thing I did notice was a phone point.

The home should have been completed by the end of March but obviously it went **** up due to lockdown, It should be completed by the end of July so im told.

Can anyone with a current plusnet line do me a huge favour and run a ping test for ~30 seconds against thinkbroadband.com while streaming from any of: Netflix/Amazon/twitch/youtube (HD content) please, and post the result on here? As I posted before I've started getting huge latency spikes when streaming anything and am interested to know if anyone else has this problem. Opened a fault with them but heard nothing yet...

No, but when I switched from BT I lost ~8Mbps down and ~2Mbps up. Wasn't that bothered about it due to being more stable than BT.

I've just run a ping test to thinkbroadband.com while streaming a HD video from Youtube. Got a consistent 18ms response time all the way through. Tried again with a 4K video from youtube and it didn't change at all.

I'm on unlimited 80/20.

Thanks, that was my experience too up until recently :/. I've had people trying to tell me it's expected that a 70/18 line will struggle with latency if 1 person is streaming video...

Mine has dropped yet again below minimum of 37. Renewal is up next month and they have offered me another contract with a minimum of 31mb lol Think its time to move on. Think my profile changed again, even after putting in another ticket, which overnight has dropped my sync to 35000 from 44000.

'Solved' my ping problems for now by applying the 'Pro' add on to my account. Supposed to cost £5/month but they are giving it for free for a year as a goodwill gesture. They reckon it applies local QoS, which sounds like total BS to me. How can a setting on their end influence my local network? But it works so whatever.
