Plusnet Discussion Thread

All, is anybody else having issues with 5GHz on the default Hub? A quick Google seems there was an issue introduced in 4.7.5.1.83.8.263 that measn the 5GHz randomly sesm to break. I'm not sure of a fix and their support werent much help other than sending a new hub with the same firmware. Any fiuxes known, else any recommendations on a budget-ish 3rd party router?

I had this problem with a BT HomeHub 5 a few years ago. I don't think there is any fix besides rebooting the router. Best thing I ever did was add a single Ubiquiti AP and disable Wi-Fi on any router I've had since then.

Glad to know it's not unique...

Really Im after an all in one box. Ive see na TP-Link Archer C6 AC1200 for a reasonmable price, not sure how good that is though. It has some other handy features like VPN etc. which I'm after too

Yes, mine's been misbehaving the past day or so - but I wasn't sure if it was the 2.4GHz or 5GHz that was causing the issue. I too am looking for a replacement router, but wouldn't know what I'm looking at. I'm assuming you can buy ones with modems built in, rather than have to connect the Plusnet router to it via LAN?

I actually have replaced it, got a new TP-Link Archer A7 AC1750 as it was on offer. Seems good over the last day or so, plenty of features and had it up and running within about 3 minutes. You do need an external modem however, but you can pick them up dirt cheap

Thanks for the reply! After doing some googling I learned you can’t use the PlusNet router in Modem only mode, so I’ve started looking at Router/Modem combos, but I’ll check out the suggestions above too and separate modem - cheers!

Plusnet sent me one of their routers after I called them a couple of years ago (can't remember why I called). As noted, you can't use it in modem only mode so it got stuffed in a cupboard as it's pretty useless to me. While I'm sure there are better modems out there, I'm still using the original BT modem they sent me when I joined about 7 years ago.

That sounds like g.fast as FTTC would be fixed speed, it’s available from multiple providers so if you haven’t done so already compare the other providers total contract cost (multiply the headline price by the contract duration, add any install/activation costs, less discount/offers, free items/provider cash back and 3rd party cash back using TCB/Quidco and then divide it by the contract duration to get the average monthly cost over the contract duration). It’s not usually the company who advertises the lowest monthly price who works out cheapest overall.

Bit of a pain to get it on there, but openwrt should sort the hub one out. HH5A (same as hub one), was a bit glitchy, randomly reboot, randomly decide to stop giving internet after a reboot. Same hub with openwrt is rock solid, only ever need to reboot when I've made a config change.

Hmm, hadn't considered that. Have just had a quick search though it does say you need soldering skills ... of which I am sadly lacking. That is a four year old post though, so whether it's still true or not I haven't found out yet :)

Turns out they were mistaken I can’t get those speeds stuck with a fast plusnet connection 72meg virgin is on my street but they won’t extend all the way to me.

Check what the OR checker tool says, if g.fast is on the cabinet serving your part of the street, then based on your stated sync, you should be able to get those sorts of speeds - try BT if you prefer for confirmation.

The BT and Openreach tools are not giving the same results when querying whats available for me.
BT tried to get me to swap and when he checked the Openreach data he told me good news you can get ADSL and your cabinet is down to be upgraded *soon* to FTTC.

I have been on FTTC for 3 or 4 years already!

He then checked the BT tool and confirmed that yes I was indeed already on FTTC (I know!)

I suspect many more people are being given incorrect information.

So my BT contract was coming to a end so yet again I made the stupid choice to switch providers and went back to Plusnet after being away for 4-5 years. They took over the service on Monday and I am getting 30mb (was a solid 36mb with BT) at the moment but hopefully that will rise as the line training goes on. The problem I have is that the wifi is abysmal. Nothing will stay connected to either the 2.4ghz or 5ghz signals and once disconnected won't reconnect and even if they do connect it says connected to router but no internet available which is what it says at the moment although the hub has a connection to the internet as I am connected on my pc using a ethernet cable. Reading through the last page of this thread it would appear that this is a common problem with Plusnets supplied Router and the usual fix is to use a different router. Basically I have no wifi at all.

I still have my BT HH6 which I suppose they will be wanting back if I remember right from the last time I was with them and left so can anybody recommend a reasonably priced replacement for Plusnets hub please? If it's to be a BT HH how on earth do I configure it to work with Plusnet?
