Plusnet Discussion Thread

was with them for 17 months, utter garbage, speeds in single figures in evening, customer service that dont give a toss, left for talktalk, as was cheaper and faster, told me nothing to pay, then 3 months later decided i had to pay another month, told them i dont get paid for 3 weeks, guy on phone said thats fine, next thing 2 weeks later had bailiffs letter, absolute bunch of you know what, got them to pay bailiffs fees, never been happier at talktalk, higher speeds lower ping, even when i had an issue couldnt do enough to help, which surprised me to say the least lol

So not an Openreach issue that'll be beyond the direct control of any ISP then?

The chap who "fixed" it said he reset the profile so should be back over 50 (was when we tested it) but my router (8800NL R2) drops back down to 39999 after a couple of days....which is usually where the profile is stuck at 0-40 when PN do their tests..... See what they say when they get back to me as they seem to taken forever to reply to tickets these days.

On their forums other people are having the same problems

The system that's dropping your connection speed is almost certainly BT's (Openreach's) DLM kicking in to try and keep the line stable. The ISP is the only one you can deal with, but it's generally not a problem they're causing.

The fix is not to just keep resetting DLM either, if your SnR target keeps getting raised then it's because there's a fault that needs repairing.

Connection back down under 40meg, FFS! Re-opened ticket utter clowns

Something similar used to happen to our FTTC line, after a year or two of complete stability. As you have noted for a few days of a "fix" the line would then reduce in speed. Ultimately to fix for me was Openreach being involved and they had to get their "underground" team to renew part of the line between the local cabinet and the telegraph pole. It doesn't help as some of that overall connection is done in CCA (copper clad aluminium) iirc, but since they did those repairs a few years ago all has been great and very stable.

Yeah but for some reason it sticks me on a profile where I don't get the "Extra" fibre I am paying for as that is 0.128 - 80MB! I wouldn't be bothered if it was normal fibre.

Looks like they will have to do some more digging to figure it out. Previous to this there was a fault up the street from me which put me under 35meg. Running speedtests now and its 38, will see what they say after they do more tests.

What does BT say the acceptable/expected speed range should be for your line?

Getting BT to do remedial work if your connection is still within that range can be difficult/impossible. What you want is a line that's either working properly or is more-or-less completely broken. If it's obviously broken they will come and fix it. If it's just running more slowly than you'd like, or believe it should be capable of, they generally aren't interested because they are still supplying the service they promised.

It did take some time and, turned out for the best that it went this way, eventually my Internet FTTC connection just stopped working altogether. Funny tho that the line still worked for voice calls. Even tho my direct contact was always going to be with Plusnet it was Openreach who needed to kick in gear to eventually sort out the issue. I got the impression at the time that Plusnet were not the delay to correcting the slowing down issues of my FTTC connection but it certainly helped when it failed altogether. That seemed to jumpstart OR into action.

BT says:
Downstream
High: 57.4(Mbps) Low: 40.5 (Mbps) - Clean
High: 40.5(Mbps) Low: 35 (Mbps) - Impacted

UP: 11.8 / 7.7 Clean and 7.7 / 7.2 - Impacted

Just done a BT Speedtest:
35.53 down
6.87 up
Ping 17

Router:
Attainable Rate (Kbps) 44771 8909
Rate (Kbps) 39999 8909

Might plug the One hub in see what that says

You’ve been rate capped at 40mbps.

My line says attainable 70 Mb however I’ve been capped at 60 Mb for what feels like eternity. If I log a fault, Openreach do a DLM reset and it syncs at 70 for about a week but then it will always end up being capped at 60 Mb. I’ve never really bothered looking into it too much as it doesn’t make a huge difference.

Just switched from BT to Plusnet but pings seems rather high. Pinging Google at around 20 - 25ms compared to 10ms I was getting via BT. I'm on Plusnet fibre Extra and using the BT HH6

Could be that interleaving is turned on by default, give it a few days and see if it switches to fast path

Yeah i'll give it a few more days.

It says this in the router settings:

DSL uptime:
1 Days, 2 Hours 26 Minutes 24 Seconds

Data rate:
20.00 Mbps / 67.03 Mbps

Maximum data rate:
23770 / 81365

Noise margin:
6.8 dB / 6.3 dB

Line attenuation:
13 dB

Signal attenuation:
8.1 dB / 13 dB

VPI / VCI:
0/38

Modulation:
G_993_2_ANNEX_B

Latency type:
Fast Path

I take it saying i'm on fast path doesn't always mean just that?

Cheers

It’s funny, I’m out of contract with PlusNet and the price is still competitive compared if I switched to BT and fixed. That’s not including the cash back though.

Wait for Black Friday might be some deals popping up.
I’m out of contract as I have my house for sale and where I’m looking at moving to the houses either seem to have FTTP or VM depending on the area. So I’m a little reluctant to lock onto a contract to not be able to get FTTC or FTTP on one of the VM only areas.
