I haven't read all the thread but the cashier should have handed it to her Manager.
I would have gone in, asked for the Manager and enquired about the £200 and see what the reaction was.

I'd like to think I would hand it in but ........................

if it was in a wallet i'd hand it in. bundle of cash with no proof of owner = pocket.
I was just going to say the same.

For a bundle of notes with no distinguishing marks [other than serial numbers, of course, but who looks at those, let alone memorises them?!], the end result is going to be nearly the same whether you hand it in to the police or pocket it immediately; the only difference being an interval of six months, or however long it is before it becomes legally yours.

I love all the self justification of "If I'd of lost it, I deserve to have it pinched" and "If the person was careless enough to loose it then its their fault"

As i said before, it could have been a frail little old lady who dropped it after drawing out her pension/savings, That £200 could have been saved for months only to misplace it.

Shame on you whoever would take it :( As I said before, hopefully most of it is bravado, or most of them voting are people who don't know the meaning of money.

Thinking about it I would keep it after having 2 experiences with lost property in stores.
My daughter lost her coursework folder somewhere in Longton so we retraced her steps and the loss pointed at Tesco.
We asked and there was nothing.
2 days later we asked again, they went missing for 10 mins and came back with nothing.
2 days later we tried again but the same response.
Exactly 1 week later my wife was doing her big shop, casually asked and it had been in a drawer just behind the 'returns' desk since it was lost.

The other one was in another Tesco where I didi a Healthy Eating stand.
1 day later I realised some of my display was missing so I went back to the store but no luck.
I then asked over a number of weeks because I know different people will give different answers.
About 3 months later I get a call from Tesco asking me if a stand belonged to us because they had just come across it and it had our name on it.

I'd keep the money.

Hand it in. I was full of a cold, took some anti cold tablets and lockets and tunes and other bits to clear my head, drove about 150 miles with the heater on full. Got out and went toa cash machine, took £200 out and went into the shop. 20 secs later a woman taps me and hands me my £200 i forgot to take out the machine, seems i walked off after i got my card and forgot about it. drugged up to the eyeballs with anti cold stuff im sure did this to me as ive never done it before or after.

So for me, hand it in, great feeling to get it back and as the OP says, maybe the xmas budget...

Same type of thing happened with me last year I was waiting to use the cash machine. The guy in front of me walks away and into the supermarket and the machine starts beeping. that's when I realized he had walked off and left 200 Euro sticking out of the machine.

I took it out got my money and then went into the supermarket and found him.

He was very pleasantly surprised when I gave it back to him.

Wow. I must say, I've lost a lot of respect for many of the posters in this thread.

To you it's something you could've been none the wiser. To someone else, that could be their child's first christmas. Hand it in.

Just what I'm thinking. It's probably just all the same people who say they'd "hit" the girl from Harry Potter trying to big themselves up and look hard.

I handed it in. The woman behind the counter just took my name and number on a scrap of paper. She said she'd ring if no-one claimed it. (no she wasn't fit)

when I paid I popped back and asked her if anyone came for it. she said they did.
shesaid the guy was gonna ring me to say thanks - no one ever called

I'm beginning to think she could have just pocketed it herself!

You did the right thing, even if the shop worker didn't, which we don't know for sure. She could very well have the same moral compass as you :)

Areeed with the guy who said he'd inform the shop he'd found it, leave a contact number if anyone tries to claim it then hand it into the police.

I can't believe the number of you that say that you would pocket it. And for what? A graphics card, another console game?? Seriously that 200 could be for a family doing their Christmas shopping and you couldn't care less. I agree the rest of you guys. Hand it to the police, inform the supermarket, and if no one claims it within the given time, then it is yours.
