i would love an 8 core unlocked cpu but dat price with a rve and 3200 ddr4 is not so nice. I think ill stick to my poor persons pentium g3258 and i5 2550k for now

I've gotta say, the x99 stuff look like good value apart from RAM prices but I've yet to make the most of my x79 parts so won't be upgrading.

Intel 5820K 3.30GHz (Haswell-E) Socket LGA2011-V3 Processor
Gigabyte X99-UD4 Intel X99 (Socket 2011) DDR4 ATX
Crucial 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4
Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro 64-Bit

Seems like I couldnt resist in the end - was thinking about a monitor and larger SSD and went in exactly the opposite direction:D

I was tempted to upgrade just for the sake of it but nah...I'll wait another year. Doesn't look like much of an 'upgrade' anyway.

Yeah I was thinking about upgrading too but being mainly a gamer there doesn't seem to be much point at the moment if everything you have now is running great.
The only real reason I would have to upgrade is the fact my motherboard at the moment is x16 and x4 for my crossfire setup so its not ideal but aslong as im hitting 60fps on the highest settings so far I guess theres not much need.

After reading the reviews and looking at the results in applications and games where I use my current system, I conclude that X99 in it's current shape and form is not worth while the upgrade. Even though the X79 platform is from 2011, I got a bigger performance percentage wise boost upgrading my previous LGA 1155 platform with Core i7 870 to a LGA2011 platform with a Core i7 3820.

No this time around Intel won't get my money. I'll wait to see what happens with Skylake,

I'm a gamer so unless it somehow outperforms a 4790k by a decent margin there's no point. I don't think it will do any better on single and dual card set-ups. Is it possible the eight core might even be slower due to clock speed limits?
I'm talking about in-game performance not benchmarking.

I'm concerned at 6 cores being an interim measure, not the new trend. I would be annoyed to buy the 5820k then Broadwell or Skylake comes in at 8 cores minimum 6 months later.

but performance wise a fast Z97 / Core i7 47x0 processor with DDR3 memory will offer you roughly the same performance.

Games do not really require a CPU with 8-cores and given the fact that the clock frequencies on the quad-core processors can be higher, the performance in certain scenarios will even benefit the quad-cores over 6 and 8-cores. It's close though and if you plan to build an enthusiast class 8-core platform that must last you the next five years, I would recommend the X99 / Core i7 5960X. But then again, there's budget we need to take into consideration as well.

I very much doubt that will be the case, I would expect the next few generations to be the same as Haswell-E with only the £750 chip an 8 core and the rest 6 core.

There's little reason for Intel to make their 8 core CPU's mainstream any time soon, I'm surprised they've even made 6 cores mainstream by releasing 5820K. IMO 4770K and the like are a tough sell now, i5 would be my value choice with 5820K for anyone wanting to spend more.

For a gamer on a 4790k there's no reason to upgrade based on these results,
