I can't see it happening - but it isn't something I'd take off the table when dealing with defensive considerations for this country.

Yes. Yellowstone blowing its top is the big one, of course. The other big possible is a trade war with Europe going nasty; remember that France has nukes.

If Yellowstone blew up it would cause a natural disaster so bad it would cause an almost world wide winter from ash in the upper atmosphere.

Nukes would be pointless then

You really think that when planning this countries defenses it's worth considering that sometime in the next 5 years our biggest ally will launch nuclear weapons at us? Even considering their capital city is 200 miles from ours? And also knowing our response would wipe them out? Really?

Like many of the big natural disasters there if often no way of knowing for sure when and how powerful they will be - there are several that at the upper end of the scale - not necessarily Armageddon end of the scale would cause the US significant domestic problems including all the fault stuff around California and off the coast there which could potentially cause a massive tsunami (though very low chance) and out of control wildfire which IIRC could possibly cover or seriously affect ~30% of the US in the worse case scenarios.

You can bet there has been planing for that eventuality - you don't just ignore that a neighbouring country has nukes no matter what the geopolitical landscape looks like today - especially how that could play out in a theoretical situation where we don't have nuclear weapons of our own.

I think Corbyn's main problem is that he's main supporters are the left wing activists and trade unions, but Labour is not a credible electable party unless they can pull in center ground voters, so he prefers not to speak about key topics which would enrage either the left wing or the slightly left of centre.

well more comedy for the labour party and comrade corbyn now.

The Communist Party of Britain says it will not field any candidates for June's election - the first time it hasn't run for any seats since 1920.
The party's general secretary Robert Griffiths has instead called for supporters to vote Labour in order to "reject austerity, privatisation and imperialist war" under a Tory government.
Mr Griffiths says its members will offer "practical campaigning assistance" to local Labour bodies, but has not ruled out running candidates in the future.

I really don't think that can possibly considered an accurate poll. Unless Tory supporters were barred from voting. It also shows it's bias by only offering a choice of 2 potential prime ministers..

The reason it offers two is because they're the only likely candidates. There's no chance the lib dems could win because of our broken voting system.

I can see it now, lots of people will vote lib dem as a protest vote and they'll gain seats but still not as much as labour, even if labour lose some. It'll be a wasted vote.

Instead of lib dems people should vote labour. I voted lib dems and they made a deal with the devil (coalition) which they would do again without hesitation.

What else were they supposed to do?

Also my thoughts. I never voted Lib Dem but I do feel they made a brave choice to try and make a difference and do the right thing. It destroyed the party but I have always felt they did what was right for the country rather than the party which has earned them my respect if not my vote.

I don't see Labour providing effective opposition now. They have very little to say on the direction of Brexit, and while they do point out how the Tories are trashing the NHS and education system to satisfy their dogmatic desires, Labour refuse to offer a credible way of financing our public services. We have 3 choices:

1) Save our services by increasing expenditure and raise the money through debt (Labour)
2) Save our service by increasing tax (preferably income tax) (Lib Dem)
3) Let our services be decimated. (Torys)

I know which one makes sense to me..

Why should I must vote for one of the 2 traditional parties based on which one stinks the least?

In Cambridge, it will either be Labour or Lib Dems whatever happens. I should add that I know a lot of long time Labour voters in Cambridge, and while some of them love the tax the rich message a lot are very unhappy about Labour's role in Brexit.

uk national debt is £1.73 trillion. how are the planning on paying this off if it just keeps on rising? it's tripled in the past decade. i can only see that sort of cash being squeezed from the rich as the poor have nothing as it is atm.

I've said already in this thread we need to raise taxes, I've also said both the middle income and high income earners should take the hit.
Increase income tax base rate by 2-3p, increase tax free allowance to ensure that the lowest earners don't end up paying more. By increasing the base rate which is hard for people to avoid through rebate schemes, you get middle income earners to pay a bit more and high income earners to pay a lot more..

TBH though if I had my way I'd also scrap NI and stick that all on the IC base as well.. It's a tax on jobs which is not progressive (Unlike income tax it is capped) and it's not efficient to collect it compared to IC. That in itself would pull a lot more tax in from high earners and make life easier for SMEs..

so oil and uranium deposits would become incredibly valuable, given we have neither that seems like a very useful time to have nukes.

This. I always thought the coalition ended up being the best government we had for ages. It took some of the sharp edges off the more extreme Tory policies. I felt said that in return for that the Lib Dem voters deserted them in droves as they felt betrayed.

The "poor" pay nothing hence why the debt is so high.

but to put that in perspective you could wipe out our national debt out by nationalizing a big hedge fund.

several are worth well over 1 trillion now.
